Flickering screen when scrolling

I have the new MacBook Air 13" and experience a problem with a flickering screen when scrolling when surfing the web (just regular web pages with text). This problem occurs both when using Google Chrome and Safari. When I do not scroll there is no problem; but when I use the trackpad to scroll down a page, there is distinct flickering (especially visible, and especially irritating, when scrolling down slowly). I have tried varying the light and varying the speed and acceleration settings of the trackpad, but these measures made no difference. Does anybody else experience this, and does anyone have an idea for a solution?

I had the same problem (MBA 13" 2.13, 4GB) and Apple replaced it immediately when I took it to the Apple Store in Palo Alto, CA. You may want to check with Apple.

I have the same issue with a mid 2012 Ivy bridge 13 inches macbook pro, bougth it 3 days ago. I've opened a new thread on this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5117964?tstart=0

I´ve been in the store and every single macbook pros and airs had the same problem, I should have return it, witch I still can do, but I brought it home again because Apple has to take responsability on this, and need to find a solution, it causes great strain to eyes and for people that work on web design like me i'ts even worst. IT'S A GENERAL PROBLEM. Please give feedback so that Apple may take this serious problem in consideration.

Specify "flickering" in more detail.

I've had a bit more than 40 or so new 2013 Macbook Air in hand, never seen same, and own one.

As per the 2012 model Air Ive had maybe 50 or more thru hand and never seen same.

Can you take a video with your Iphone of this 'flickering', post it to youtube or otherwise for a look.

Deductively, SINCE YOU ARE IN EUROPE, Im making a groundless assumption at this point you have a power flicker. Do you only see the flicker when plugged in?

Was I the only one to notice that most (or all?) of people in this thread reporting same are in Europe or at least in the "Land of 220V" ??

Another thread on LCD Flicker of a IMac (doesnt matter if its an Imac....power is power.....LCD is LCD, realistically).

Apple used cheapest screens on olmost $2000 MacBook Air

Baseless conjecture and 100% inaccurate. Even the MOST critical reviews out there LOVE the screen on the Macbook Air. I prefer same over my Pros in fact.

The 1440 by 900 display on the 13-inch model Air is superb.

Ive owned enough laptops to RE-sink the Titanic,...I cant recall a more buttery monitor I can stare at for endless hours than the Air.

Don´t know about american macbook pro's or airs, and to be honest i don't care, here in Europe ALL OF THEM, IN EVERY STORE, have the same problem, when you scroll on a app or web browser, any web browser, you can see how gray borders for instance, or gray text disapear while scrolling or change color for a brighter one.

SO DON´T TELL ME WHAT I SEE, because it's 100% ACCURATE! I´m a web designer, and computer professional and work with computers and test them all bloody day. People at apple stores gave me reason and they in fact where suprised that they've never realized that on macbook pros and airs screens.

And YES it's the SCREEN because when you plug it to a external monitor you get NO ISSUES.... OH, and has nothing to do with beeing plugged to power source or not.

So swallow up your arrogance and fan boy stupidity, and stop kissing Apple's but, because in 1249.00€ machines it's not acceptable this kind of issues.

if you cannot calm down and answer a couple questions, diagnosis is impossible.

1. Does this occur only plugged in?

2. Do you have a little video clip of same?

3. the MacBook Air screen in correct order has no issues, hence 'eliminative diagnosis to help you questions' are being asked.

what is the flicker rate? very fast or slow? roughly the cycle rate of the flicker?

Actually hooking your Air to an external monitor and having a perfect screen does not prove the screen itself is bad at all,.... in fact it reinforces power flicker as potential causation.

External monitor hookup elminates: lvds monitor cable,-- monitor, ---logic to monitor cable junction,-- and power flicker.

So, that little bit of information inbetween your emotional and unhelpful exchange was, at least, helpful in narrowing it down.

if you can set aside your emotional outburst for a few mins you may realize someone is trying help you. 😊

Peace

Well I'm sorry if I was a bit rude, I got angry with the "100% inaccurate" thing, and it wasn't my intention to offend you...

The flickering occurs whenever your scroll on a app or web browser, anywhere that has text and borders, it's not ghosting or anything to do with that, and as I told you before, it doesn´t matter if the machine is plugged on the power or not, nor depends on which type of manufacturer of the LCD, I've tested both Samsung ones and LG ones too.

I've turned macbook pros 3 or 4 times to different stores, and I made them open in store other 3 or 4 for me to test them before buying them, because they all had the same problem, and finally I resigned and kept one with Samsung LCD because color calibration is much better than the LG one, even though it has the flickering issue.

The things I 've tested out:

1-Plugged in power source: makes no difference.

2- PRAM Reset: no difference in after the reset or before.

3- LG or SAMSUNG LCD manufacturer: Makes no difference, had both, and both have same issue, even though is less noticeable in Samsung LCD.

4- Brightness: no difference whether you put the brightness down or up, it still shows.

5- Color calibration: no diferrence between color calibrations, you try as many as you wish, you'll still get the flicker.

5- HD or SSD make no difference: I've bought it with a HD and i've upgrade it with an SSD, and it's the same.

6- I've tested 4Gb and 8Gb RAM models: No difference, still get the issue.

7- I've tested all the 13'' Macbook pros and 11'' and 13'' Macbook airs: no difference between them, all had the same issue.

8- Imacs and Retina Macbook pros didn't had this issue.

9- When plugged to external monitor: No issues.

There are some websites in internet where you can test your screen quality by image displaying ,and you can realize how much bright flashing or flickering you get by doing so. you can get an idea of how cheated you where whith this screens. I strongly advise you to go here and test your creen.

I've made a video with my iphone but its so crappy that it could be no use to show the issue, I'll try to make other one to show it properly.

Oh, that doesnt matter, you didnt offend me and I cant be insulted,...I was just trying to be helpful 😊

#5 I assume then you mean youve altered settings in ColorSync Utility?

Yes, HD or SSD and RAM would have no affect on this (unless the RAM was bad).

I didnt 'get cheated', my Air monitor is fine as are my 2 macbook Pros..., so are most everyone.

The flickering issue was resolved for the very small number of people who experienced same back in June with the update that was issued with the Air.

Your post is referring mostly to your macbook Pro (do you own an Air?)

RE: " francomile I have the same issue with a mid 2012 13 inches macbook pro."

*Your process of elimination indicates you have a faulty GPU on your logic board on your specific macbook Pro machine...given all youve indicated, make a service call to Apple for same.

Yes, I know about calibration screens.

How do you quantify "tested all the Pros and Airs",...thats a loose statement 😊

Peace.

Oct 19, 2013 3:39 PM in response to PlotinusVeritas

I've tested all the 2012 macbook pros and airs in four different stores. overall some 16 or more machines.

I wan´t to clear sonething here, it's not this kind of flickering issue there was on airs recently or on retina macbook pros.

I'll try to explain once more what is the issue:

when you scroll on a website for instance, the borders on the website and it's text, shine when you move up or down, untill you stop scrolling. pale gray ones sometimes completely disappear on scrolling sometimes, it's like a speed issue, like when you hover on a link and it changes color or opacity, the general efect is like if the text is blinkering when you scroll.

it has nothing to do with the kind of flickering that was on some airs, that all image shaked, this is only noticeable on text and borders in webpages or apps. it's like an anoying fashing on text and borders while scrolling.

English is not my mother language so I can't explain you any better than this, You would need to see it for yourself. Other thing I've noticed is that most people only realize it when they are told about the issue and given an live example.

This may bee an issue with the graphic card, but then you woudth see it on an external monitor, which you don't.

The point is, there is some problem with this machines, and Apple should sort it out, because I haven't bought another mac to show of or because I'm a fan boy, for me that's all crap and I´m not interested in those wars of brands, because apple never payed me to defend it or make free publicity, I bought it to work, I use it every day in my profession and I spend all day working on it, so for me its a BIG ISSUE, and should be a big concern to all mac users and mostly for Apple itself, who is is seling copper at gold price.

Anyway I don´t thing this discussion can go further because you don't know the problem and can't see it live, and Apple will do nothing about it because people will keep buying their machines whithout even thinking if they worth all that money. Apple has grown a group of fanatics like those religious sects that follow their guru like sheeps, whithout no critical point of view, brainless.

Anyway thanks for the interest, but I realize now that all the efford spent in this discussion will be like raining in wet, pointless.

francomile,I wanted to say that about one week ago I bought a new 13 inch standard Macbook Pro (from June of 2012) with Maverick on it and I also am having this problem. I called Apple a few times and they said it was normal, yeah right! We have no apple stores within 80 miles by the way and I had ordered this from the apple website.) So I went into Best Buy in town here the next day, 6/30/14, to try out the Macbook airs and the other standard Macbook Pros and sure enough, they also had the problem. Then I tested the retina Macbook pros which did not have this problem so my post is validation of what you are saying.

I'm very disappointed with apple over this and it really bothers me because it makes me dizzy.

PlotinusVeritas, you said the problem was resolved for some people with an update? How can I get this update? I want mine to be fixed too. I have system 10.9.4 on mine.

Thanks.
