itunes unbelievably slow accessing SMB shares

Are there any updates with regard to this problem? this is utterly annoying, and if what I've read is true

No update, the problem is between iTunes 10 e samba. iTunes 9 works very well.

You are supposed to have iTunes > 10 if your iOS is newer than 4.1, am I right? There is no way I can downgrade iTunes to version 9? Why do they just don't give a da**?

is there anyway we can let Apple know abuot this issue? something like Linux bug report? is there anyway to know whether Apple is already aware of this bug or whether they are already working on fixing it?

I have iTunes 10 because I have ios 4.2.1, with 4.1 iTunes 9 works very well.

With windows 7 iTunes 10 works fine with SMB. I guess that apple does'nt interest this problem. :mad:

I got a workaround for this problem. I have my music on a SMB share (linux). iTunes accessed my music over a network drive. When I updated to iTunes 10.x it started but then it was always not responding. Now the workaround (my iTunes is in german so the menu names may be a little different):

- I exported the music library (File->Music Library?->export?)
- I opened the exported XML file and changed the file locations from the network drive to the IP address of my server (from: file://localhost/Y:/Musik/... to: file://localhost//192.168.2.34/public/Musik/...).
- Then I disconnected the network share so that I could delete all songs in iTunes.
- After that I reimported the XML file (File->Music Library?->Import playlist?).
- Reconnected the network drive.

So what I did is changing the access method of iTunes to my songs from "network drive" to "IP".

Now it all works! 🙂

Very interesting Joschi, shame on Apple if the solution is this simple... I wonder though who is to blame, Apple or Microsoft. What your workround does is simply spare Windows the need to look up what "Y:" actually is, right? I understand that that is up to the OS and not the app...

Anyway, I wanted you to elaborate a bit more on your workaround. Your post seems to suggest that you changed one parameter but I don't actually see where it might be. For every single song I have in my xml library file, I can see that string

for example file://localhost/Y:/White%20Lion/The%20Best%20Of%20White%20Lion/

that means that I would have to modify every single entry of my xml file and that defeats the whole purpose for I'm not actually changing the music path but the different pointers that my xml knows of, right?

BTW this is what the heading of my xml file looks like should that help

I have modified it for every single entry. Just open it in a 'fast' editor like Notepad++ or something like that. Then you can do a simple 'Find & Replace'. F.e.: Search for 'file://localhost/Y:/' and replace it with 'file://localhost//<%IP%>/<%shareName%>/'.

I'm afraid I don't get it... what happens if for instance you want to add a new album to your library? it will get stuck for some minutes showing the same symptoms, right? I mean, if what you suggest works, you can then reload the same music library that you already had but you will avoid it getting stuck with the timeouts that somebody mentioned before, but when you add something new to your modified library you will experience a timeout again, right?

Just tested something that I had not tested before. Went to file --> add folder, tried to access my NAS and experienced the same painful slow access. I reiterate that I feel Windows is the one to blame because the window that pops up has a windows look&feel -reminds me of a system window rather than a iTunes design-. I confirm that the network is just dead, nothing goes on but the iTunes app is frozen for several minutes.

I added also new music folders without a problem. But remember that you have to use the IP when you add the music and not the network drive name. F.e. access to you share folder as follows: \\<%IP%>\<%shareName%>\Musik (\\192.168.2.34\public\Musik).

could you elaborate a little more on "you have to use the IP when you add the music and not the network drive name"... could you detail how you add new songs to your library? Do you first open a Windows System Explorer, then access your ip -not the NAS server name- and then you drag & drop a music folder onto your itunes? Where do you store your itunes library file, locally or in the NAS server?

I started that thread because I suspect that ?my? windows has some issues -the slowliness in my environment seems to end when a timeout acurrs- accessing a Network samba share. My gut tells me that we could have an explanation there but I could be dead wrong...

Experiencing the same problems as you guys describe - slow transfers, spinning beachball. iTunes Freezes even if I only add one album from my NAS using the SMB protocol.

It seems like running the AFP protocol instead of SMB, does not lock up iTunes.

Changing the path in the library XML is not an option for me, because I can't even add the files without iTunes going loco!

I gave up and tried AFP (netatalk) instead of SMB. It works like a charm and it only took like five minutes to setup.

I had to switch to using AFP to talk to my Iomega NAS/RAID box too. I had wanted to use SMB, so the filesystem would look the same from my Mac and from my PC (i.e., no .DS_Store files, etc.), but the iTunes performance was killing me. Switching to AFP fixed it immediately.

Finder didn't have any issues w/ SMB, so it certainly seems like an iTunes issue.
