itunes unbelievably slow accessing SMB shares

ok. iTunes 10 had this bug, iTunes 10.1 as well.
i'm hosting my music library on a WIndows 2008 R2 server. an >10k$ HP DL380 G7, by the way.

ever since i started using iTunes 10 all went to ****.
iTunes 10(.1) is unbelievably painstakingly annoyingly slow accessing my Windows SMB shares. no matter if its a wired or WIFI connection.

Finder works just as supposed. >100MB/s file copy performance over SMB all day long over a GbE.

importing an album to iTunes takes ages. iTunes is stuck at least for a minute PER SONG. "Processing Album Artwork" takes ages as well.

right now, to be able to sync my iPhone 4 with iTunes i have to use Windows 7 inside VMware Fusion on OS X.

help, anyone?

and no, its not my network, its not my MacBook, its just Apple. a boatload of other users has exactly the same problem.

this is really uber annoying. i so much hoped this would get fixed with the release iTunes 10.1.

I resolved the problem by enabling "oplocks" and turning off the iTunes built-in server. My performance increased dramatically!!!

After having the same issue with unacceptable SMB share performance, and an unusable iTunes collection, I tried two things tonight - upgrading to 10.1.1 and turning off oplocks in XP.

Not sure which one worked, but all is back to rights.

Turning off oplocks (I had to add the REG_DWORD entries, they were not present):

I had been running 10.1.2 and accessing all of my music of an SMB share. It was awful. Then I DISABLED oplocks, setting HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/mrxsmb/Parameters/OplocksDisabled to 1 and HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/LanmanServer/Parameters/EnableOplocks to 0.

Now it is access the files without delay. Awesome. Definitely the oplocks.
