iPad not charging via PC

Hi all,

I got my iPad a couple of days ago. When I connect it to the USB port on my PC it will sync with iTunes and do everything it's meant to. However at the top of the iPad it will say "Not Charging" next to the battery icon. It will charge when connected to the mains outlet but not via PC. The USB ports on my PC are 2.0. (MY iPhone charges fine when connected to these ports also)

Thanks in advance 🙂

You need to read carefully. The first link posted by a user, here I'll repost it ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4060 )

explained it all. For some USB ports, not delivering enough power, it will charge the IPAD in sleep mode. (When the Ipad is alseep) Thefore obviously when you wake the Ipad up to see it, it will say NOT CHARGING. Cause its awake! lol

I read through all the replies on this thread to see if anyone picked this up but no, it was mostly going round and round.

Here is the excert from the kb (knowledge base) article.

"When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode."

"

Charging Tips

The fastest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but I had the same issue. Bought my iPad used on Amazon, tried to hook it up to my Laptop to sync, and charge, it said Could not Charge, I Moved it over to my USB 3.0 and it charges just fine. and fast.

Running a machine with a sandybridge i7, so I might have more voltage. I don't know. hope this helps

Stevefrom is correct, I was confused and thought something was wrong with my wifes iPad, the fact is on a Asus laptop the iPAD charges easily even though it says not charging. Of course if you are running the iPad at full whack it may charge very slowly but I went from 7% to 11% charge in a matter of 15 mins so it's not to bad..Try it yourselves... It's convenient as we don't want to carry the charger around with us all the time.. I like Apple products but I'm not one of these Appleheads who believes the sun shines out of, lets say rear end..

I have read through all of the comment and it just happens that my coworker and I were needing to charge his ipad which was at 2%. We plugged it in and sure enough it said "not charging". Per the comments within this post we switched to other USB ports on the laptop and docking station. What we noticed was the following:

  • switching to other USB ports doesnt change the status of "not charging"
  • when the laptop is off somehow it changes the status to "charging"
  • it appears to charge it but after we left it on the charger (via USB connected to the laptop) but in fact it does not charge it

Bottom line it will charge your iPhone but not your iPad when connecting the USB cord to your laptop....

Just my 2 cents😕

Obviously you did not read ALL the replies as you stated. 🙂

It has been established that when connected to a low powered USB port, the not charging sign shows because the rate of charge is as such that it less than the consumed or operating energy. If you cause the IPAD to sleep, it would charge (obviouly we wont see the charging sign when its sleeping).

So to proof this, leave it plugged in for a while in sleep mode and see if the battery power increases.

It is also documented in the documentation , with its linked posted several times on this thread.

Have a good day. 🙂

My word! haha this thread is entertaining. I figured I'd post what is fact so that the debacle of "scam" can (hopefully) be put to rest.

The person posting about scam is KIND of right. They just have their info mixed up.

The "not charging" is in fact NOT lying. It's truly NOT going to charge. This is VERY easy to determine.

If that poster is right and apple is trying to brainwash and take over the world, then the LIE is in fact a LIE.

Therefore, leaving it on for let's say TWO FULL DAYS with the screen brightness off and in airplane mode, it should go from a known 2% to at least lets say 15%.... Try this please... then argue with me on it....

It will STILL be at 2% or possibly even drained. It WILL NOT CHARGE if it says "Not charging"

What lame brain is THINKING of is the dreaded "This accessory does not support this device" message.

What it REALLY should read is "This accessory is not supported or endorsed by apple because they refused to pay us for licensing rights"

That IS truly a "scam" message. My car (hyundai sonata) used to say that until an iOS update. I read on their site that Hyundai finally paid up and of course in the next iOS release, they added my car to the "do not nag" list. It's simply a message but the phone works perfect on any "not supported" device.

However if you don't have the green progress battery icon on your lock screen, or you don't have the lightning bold in the battery indicator, guess what... YOU AIN'T CHARGIN' BUBB.

Those are FACTS. My iPhone charges fine on my HP rp5700 desktop pc. My iPad however DOES NOT.

There is a peripheral you can buy if you are using a pc. I have an iPad, the APPLE BRANDED iPad dock/stand and the cable that came iwth the iPad. I get "NOT CHARGING" on my HP but I get charging/lightning bolt on other units I connect to. So it's USB voltage/wattage difference that determines the outcome.

The aforementioned accessory is a PCI card which you can get 2.0 or 3.0. They also have combo cards with 3.0 and lightpeak or 2.0 and firewire. You're looking at a whopping $25 on average for this component.

As far as laptops go, I haven't run into this issue yet they all work for me but it seems the asus utility is a good go from what I've seen here.

Hope this helps clear the air a little. So yes there is definitely some artful dodging on apple's part to try and "market" their buying audience but that one poster got the context wrong was all....

Cool thanks for that information. We will try that...

July 26th 2012 was two years ago?

And I also disagree on voltage. Yes USB is TYPICALLY 5v/dc but there are LVD buses as well as 3.3v/dc

out there as well. I just don't play assumptions with electronics is all. Given the large number of competative standards that stay proprietary and don't become a standard.

Just ask nokia about it...

No, you're wrong. USB is ALWAYS 5vdc.

Also, an update on my findings, I would never believe it, especially given the hoaky download screen but the asus AI-charger really does work. I tried it on that HP rp5700 which is a desktop and it shows charging and it's the exact rate as the 10w ac adapter. Chris forgot about AC conversion... watts are not the sole factor.

Please stop making a fool out of yourself. Watts are the sole factor. Period.
