My word! haha this thread is entertaining. I figured I'd post what is fact so that the debacle of "scam" can (hopefully) be put to rest.
The person posting about scam is KIND of right. They just have their info mixed up.
The "not charging" is in fact NOT lying. It's truly NOT going to charge. This is VERY easy to determine.
If that poster is right and apple is trying to brainwash and take over the world, then the LIE is in fact a LIE.
Therefore, leaving it on for let's say TWO FULL DAYS with the screen brightness off and in airplane mode, it should go from a known 2% to at least lets say 15%.... Try this please... then argue with me on it....
It will STILL be at 2% or possibly even drained. It WILL NOT CHARGE if it says "Not charging"
What lame brain is THINKING of is the dreaded "This accessory does not support this device" message.
What it REALLY should read is "This accessory is not supported or endorsed by apple because they refused to pay us for licensing rights"
That IS truly a "scam" message. My car (hyundai sonata) used to say that until an iOS update. I read on their site that Hyundai finally paid up and of course in the next iOS release, they added my car to the "do not nag" list. It's simply a message but the phone works perfect on any "not supported" device.
However if you don't have the green progress battery icon on your lock screen, or you don't have the lightning bold in the battery indicator, guess what... YOU AIN'T CHARGIN' BUBB.
Those are FACTS. My iPhone charges fine on my HP rp5700 desktop pc. My iPad however DOES NOT.
There is a peripheral you can buy if you are using a pc. I have an iPad, the APPLE BRANDED iPad dock/stand and the cable that came iwth the iPad. I get "NOT CHARGING" on my HP but I get charging/lightning bolt on other units I connect to. So it's USB voltage/wattage difference that determines the outcome.
The aforementioned accessory is a PCI card which you can get 2.0 or 3.0. They also have combo cards with 3.0 and lightpeak or 2.0 and firewire. You're looking at a whopping $25 on average for this component.
As far as laptops go, I haven't run into this issue yet they all work for me but it seems the asus utility is a good go from what I've seen here.
Hope this helps clear the air a little. So yes there is definitely some artful dodging on apple's part to try and "market" their buying audience but that one poster got the context wrong was all....
