Mini Displayport to HDMI with Audio?

Can anyone succinctly tell me the easiest way to get audio from my mini displayport to HDMI setup? Right now, I only get video. Is there another cable to buy or should I just buy one the mini displayport/USB combo connectors?

Cheers.

Ummm, I've heard versions saying that only MAC 7.1's support audio through the mdp, but i've also hears 6,1 too. The thing is, if you bought your MAC after April 2010 (Mid 2010) it should support audio through mdp. I saw somewhere in MAC's support page a place where you could type in your MACs S/N and you would get feedback of your models specs (i.e. manufacturing date).
You can also check in APPLE > About this MAC > More Info > Audio (built in). My 7.1 MAC says HDMI/Display por output. I guess if yours says the same, it should work.

Is there a "proper" way to use a mini displayport to hdmi? I read in the product reviews that a lot of these adapters fail after a couple months, and that you should turn off your mac and tv, make the connection, then turn both back on. Is this right? What is the logic there?

Also, i'm a bit overwhelmed looking for a decent, reliable adapter. Was thinking about the Moshi.
Is this a safe choice?

The mini-Displayport and the plug that connects to it are very small and therefore relatively delicate (compared, for example, to a standard DVI port and plug). On a common-sense level, it seems prudent (1) not to connect and disconnect a MDP cable any more often than is really necessary, to minimize wear and tear on the plug and port, and (2) not to hot-plug a MDP cable when it's reasonably convenient to have the computer asleep or shut down and the monitor or TV turned off while the connection is being made or broken. This minimizes the chances for sparks and shorts that could damage the plug, port, or connected electronics.

Haven't participated in a while.

Eww got a question maybe you can help me out. I got all that minidisplay to hdmi stuff all right. I also got my home theatre working with 5.1 audio through the optical output on my MBP when I watch a DVD movie directly from the optical drive on my MBP. But recently I'v downloaded movies in .mkv format and watched them with VLC through my minidisplay to hdmi cable. I get no 5.1 audio outputing through my TosLink connection when playing back .mkv files and I'm certain it has 5.1 audio encoded in the file. I've tried everything in the sound settings, midi options, VLC's options and get no 5.1 audio in any .mkv player. I've read forums and even changed options through teminal commands with no luck. Any idea of what is going on???

Hey eww, I saw that you posted on here how to solve issues with mini display to hdmi that do not transmit sound. I have a late 2010 MBP 13 inch, identifer 7,1, core 2 duo 2.4 GHz. In the system profiler under Audio(built in) it states that HDMI/Display port Output: Connection Display. I have tried a dynex mini display port to HDMI adaptor that claims it carries the sound also, and also the MOSHI adaptor both failing to send sound to the tv. I have a Toshiba 51H84 51-inch HD-ready Rear-Projection TV with HDMI input. My roomate has an HP laptop and when he connects his computer to the tv, both audio and sound are present on the tv, so I know that the HDMI port on the TV is VESA compliant and does carry sound. However when I connect my MBP only the video is present. I have gone to the sound settings and selected output to be the HDMI , however it says no sound detected on this device, and continues to play sound through my laptop speakers. Any suggestions? Could there be an issue with the laptop itself, as I have tried both adaptors, knowing that MOSHI is the one clearly stating that sound willl be present given you have the late 2010 MBPs.

Thanks.
