"You are not a member of the Administrator group" message

I just got a new 32GB iPod touch. Whenever I try and download an app I get this message "You are not a member of the Administrator group"

I have looked through iTunes to try and find a setting to switch but I have not been able to find one.

Thanks

Helpful, detailed advice petalpad. I will add a couple things I found when following your advice. Your first line stated "if you open iTunes and look under Store, View Account - it shows a true Apple ID". This didn't happen in my case. Can't remember what it said but I eventually realized I had to log in with an Apple ID to proceed. After I logged in I saw the menu item you referred to. Also, at the end of your directions you state you need a credit card to create the Apple ID. That is 100% true. I think there were 4 icons of credit cards. After selecting one you need to put in the card number. However, after you create the Apple ID you can return to the same screen. Now, next to the credit card icons that were there, another icon appears that says 'none'. Selecting it forgets your credit card data thereby making it safe to give kids without the worry of receiving a $1,000 bill because they purchased gems in some game.

This is the same problem I have. I created an account without an email address somehow--was that allowed at some point but then discontinued?--about 2 years ago, and since then have been playing a game on it. Now I want to be able to make purchases in the game, but I can't because it's not associated with an email address--I assume that's why I get the "You are not a member of the administrative group" error when I try to log in on the apple website. To make matters worse, when I created the account, I filled out the bio information with random numbers and answers because, foolishly, I thought I would never need to use the account for anything else. I called Apple support to ask them what I could do, but since they couldn't verify the account for me (because I couldn't name the answer to the security question that I'd randomly answered back in the day), they wouldn't add an email address to it.

However, that problem is probably unique to me, so I would advise you to call Apple support and let them know about your error, and then ask them to associate your GC account (aka Apple ID without an email address) with an email address. If you can answer the security question you set up the account with, they'll do it for you. That way you'll be able to use it for other things 🙂
