iTunes 10.1.0.56 update kills network interface - Windows 7

Every time I attempt to install 10.1.0.56, it kills my wired network interface (desktop, so only interface) and hangs mid-installation. There are no errors presented.

To regain network connectivity, I have to perform a System Restore. At this point, iTunes is broken. When I attempt to launch it says that files are missing. If I try to install again, the same thing happens; the network interface dies part way through the installation.

Uninstall/reinstall of iTunes does the same thing. I tried installing an older version 10.0.x, and that was successful but it can't open the iTunes library, stating that it was created in a newer version of iTunes.

I'm jonesing for some podcasts, so any help would be appreciated. Is anyone else seeing this issue?

TG10987 -

I am having a very similar problem, but when I expand the 'Network Adapters', I have a choice of three to Uninstall.

- Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100

- Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller

- TAP-Win32 Provide V9

Which one do I uninstall? I tried the TAP-Win32 and Windows did not reload on re-boot. Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks.

I found a solution for Windows XP Pro;

Cancel tamper protection on Norton (if you have that),

Do a system restore, now itunes will no longer work.

Go to Control Panel/System/hardware/device manager/ethernet adapter/

Right click, and update drivers. (you will have to specify 32 or 64 bit system).

Now you can download iTunes again, the latest version of iTunes.

After installation, and computer restart, everything will be "OK" in Apple land.

Restore Norton tamper protection.

Ciao!

Specifically, what is the name of the network adaptor you suggest be deleted. There are two in my system and I deleted both before doing a restart. After the restart, Windows claimed to be reinstalling the required software but I could not connect to the Internet. Only by using Windows 7's finicky Restore function was I able to log on to the Internet once more.

Thanks for any additional advice.

If you try the "fix" that I suggested, you do not have to delete anything.

I always fear when deleting drivers of the possibility of making matters worse.

My view is that a "system restore" is a more safe alternative, because it can be reversed easily.

I really recommend that you try that type of solution first.

If it does not work as you would wish, you can reverse it and get right back to where you were before the attempt.

Thanks for the reply and information.

However, I still have a few questions about the procedure you are suggesting. I note that you specify your cure is for Windows XP. I never had this problem with XP and have only experienced the problem with the last iTunes update on Windows 7.

I'm confused as to why you suggest to do a Restore first and that this will disable iTunes. I can't see the connection. If I attempt a Restore, it will screw up my computer but iTunes will still work [the Restore function works very poorly on my system and sometimes has to be done several times before finally getting the Restore to succeed {claims various errors and that the Restore didn't succeed even when done in 'Save Mode'} and often locks up my computer a few times along the way].

Maybe all this is occurring because I'm running Windows 7 on my Mac Pro desktop (separate hard drive for windows).???

I am not at all familiar with Mac Pro.

My thinking goes along these lines for the problem I had with Windows XP Pro.

Itunes worked fine until I updated itunes.

Then I had to go back to a time (restore point) when everything used to work before I downloaded the itunes update.

Itunes no longer worked because the (Microsoft) restore point did not restore the (Apple) itunes to a previous time.

I then updated my drivers.

I reinstalled itunes (latest version available)

Now itunes worked perfectly because my itunes download was done after the installation of up to date drivers.

The lesson I learned was that the itunes update may not work if your drivers are not up to date before you download the update.

This is how my low level of computer knowledge sees it in a way I can understand.

Thanks Uncle Nick et al:

Apple has finally 'cured' the problem they caused with the latest released upgrade to iTunes (for Windows 7). This upgrade (10.7.0.21) actually works and doens't destroy Window's abilitty to connect to the Internet.

A warning to other Windows users, "DON'T USE THE PREVIOUS ITUNES UPDATE!" Version 10.7.0.21 should work OK (so far).

I'm trying to switch from one iPhone 4s to a new one provided by apple. When I use iTunes to restore the backup I get roughly 45% through the process and all my Windows 7 network adapters disappear. Meanwhile the restore essentially stops (although it appears to be trying).

I've twice interrupted the process (both times after a minimum of 4hours) and each time I've received a blue screen of death on windows (referring to the USB port - so I'm not blaming Microsoft). Restarting the restore doesn't appear to make progress.

Any suggestions? Right now I feel like I'm looking at some ******** apple bug that will keep my phone from ever restoring!

Now its 2013 and the same happens again, but this time with Windows 8 (64bit version) and iTunes 11.1.0.126

Apple has issued iOS version 7 which my dotter and myself upgraded our iPod Touch (5th verson) to. iOS version 7 requires iTunes 11.1.0.xxx so we upgraded toTunes 11.1.0.126. It worked fine on my PC (Dell Studio XPS 435 from 2009) but not on my dotters laptop (Medion Aloya P7815 from 2012).

Internet was not any more accessable via WLAN interface nor via LAN interface. Deinstalling iTunes did not help. Selecting a Windows restoration point previous to installing iTunes 11.1.0 did not help either.

Luckely we had a 2 days old Back-Up, we installed it on the Medion laptop so we where back to the situation before installing iTunes 11.1.0. Internet was accessable again.

Thereafter we installed iTunes 11.1.0 once more and got back the problem described above.

Now we applied the procedure described by auther "TG10987" and got back the internet connection.

We deinstalled both WLAN and LAN device in device manager (left the other decices untouched), rebooted the PC and Windows installed the devces again.

This is the first time this issue has affected my Win7 x64 machine. I was able to recover by reinstalling my drivers-uninstalling iTunes-resetting a restore... but each time I'd reinstall iTunes after fixing the error, I lose internet connection again. This is obviously a long standing bug. Too bad no one at Apple wants to address it?

Thank you for the detailed solution, TG10987 !
