If you purchased it & it disappeared then you must have clicked the [Rent] link instead of the [Buy] link. Anything you buy is your, period. You may have deleted it, or bought it on a different service, or maybe just watched it on Netflix.
*Check your 'Purchase History' by going to the iTunes store & clicking on the 'Down-Arrow' to the right of your login name in the upper-right of the window, under the [Search] box.
*Click [Account] (It may ask for your password)
*Click [Purchase History] in the 2nd group (4th button from the top for me)
*This is multiple pages & Each entry is for all items purchased in a day, including apps & free podcasts.
*Click on the Arrow [→] next to an entry to see all purchased for that day.
*If you download a lot of stuff, this may take awhile, but if you know the approximate date that should help narrow it down. (Unfortunately there's no way to search it)
*Once you find the entry, check to see if, under 'Type' it says "Rental". I don't rent things & I just rented one of the free TV episodes to see how it was listed & it says "TV Rental" so I'd assume it will say either "Movie Rental", "Film Rental" or "Video Rental"
-Rentals will disappear (delete) from your system 30 days from the time you buy them if you don't start them. ONCE YOU START IT you have 24hours (in the US. 48hours everywhere else) to finish it or it will disappear.
-Rentals won't backup when you backup your library.
-If you back it up using something else, it may copy the file, but it will be unplayable & will delete when you try to play it.

Apple's official policy { http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1469 } is that if you loose something you've purchased you have to buy it again to get it again. But if you find that you did, take a screen capture of your 'receipt' & call customer service, most Reps would rather make an exception than loose a customer who will tell an average of 5 people who will each tell an average of 2 people loosing 16 potential customers.
