Same problem here. MESSAGE TO APPLE : IT'S UNFORGIVABLE, INEXCUSABLE !

If I have bought an Apple product it's because I want to avoid these kind of problems...

Very disappointed... By the way on the iPhone 4 : AirPrint is useless (for now NO standard printers are compatible, good work guys)... AirPlay is useless (can't play my iPhone video on screen)... I'd prefer the brigthness button control... Volume buttons are just on the side of the device... Do you remember ?
You're text tones are boring, do you plan to make them customizable ?

Still no TODO app sync...

Oh and one more thing : SO MANY useful things are missing : http://www.macworld.com/article/155730/2010/11/ios4_2_missingfeatures.html

I tried to restore my iphone4 but i keep getting error message 1013. I followed the instructions to go to hosts file and deleted the line with the gs.apple.com , but this error still pops up.
any help?

For those that have NOT had this work a few tips (I'd like to bullet these points but stupid apple discussions site has primitive formatting options):

1. This only applies if you ever had any of the jailbreak tools used on your computer. TinyUmbrella, iREB, etc. If you are certain you never ever used those then the hosts file should be fine, and this fix does not apply to you. If gs.apple.com doesn't appear in your hosts file that is probably why, and nothing is wrong.

2. As somebody else noted, if you are on Windoze are your computer is setup with stupid Microsloth defaults, editing the hosts file might end up saving it as "hosts.txt". It needs to be just "hosts", no extension.

3. Are you sure you restarted iTunes or had it shut down when you made the change? Rebooting the computer after changing the hosts file not a bad idea to be sure the change takes.

4. To test if this has worked, put "gs.apple.com" in your browser. You should get redirected to a "www.apple.com/404/" error page. If you don't then something is still wrong with the DNS resolution for gs.apple.com and you probably haven't done it properly.

This is the price we all pay for using third party tools like TinyUmbrella, etc... 🙂

The host file entry is added by TinyUmbrella to force iTunes to talk to Cydia's servers instead of Apple's during the upgrade/activation process. Because Cydia's server doesn't have the appropriate signing keys for your phone and the new iOS 4.2, it bombs out.

There is an easy option in TinyUmbrella that you can disable...
Uncheck the box: "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit (If you need a clean restore from Apple uncheck this box)"
Once unchecked, exit TinyUmbrella. It automatically comments/removes the entry from your host file.

Like many - I banged my head around for a long time before discovering the cause wasn't an Apple problem but an issue with third-party 'hacking' software that I myself installed and used 😉

For Windows.

Open a Command Prompt by right clicking on it and selecting "Run As Adminstrator". The type in:
CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
NOTEPAD HOSTS

Comment out the line listed in the posts above, save the file, and exit Notepad.

From the command prompt, run:
ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstate -R
exit

Now try again.

In Explorer, navigate to Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc

Right click and open
