Read the thread which tells you exactly what to do. if cydia still comes up then you haven't fixed it. you either haven't fixed your hosts file, OR you haven't rebooted and flushed the DNS.

per the 15 references over and over and over again above - what do you get trying to browse to gs.apple.com? if you get the apple/404 error then you are OK and this is not your problem/solution, it's something else.

PEOPLE: if you DO NOT FIND gs.apple.com in your hosts file, that is GOOD AND FINE. For the 17th time: PUT GS.APPLE.COM IN YOUR BROWSER AND IF YOU GET A 404 ERROR ON AN APPLE SITE YOU ARE OK! if you get Cydia or something else, then you need to keep looking/working.

this is whats in my hosts file:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

Same problem but solved doing this :

On Mac:
* Open Finder
* Hold down COMMAND + SHIFT keys and press 'G'
* Enter "/private/etc/" in the field and press "Go"
* Find "hosts" file in the directory
* Drag the file to your desktop
* Open it in text editor
* Remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely or put a # at the beginning of it to comment it out
* Save the file
* Drag it back to the /private/etc/ folder.
* You'd need to enter your username and password to authenticate the move

On Windows:

* Locate the hosts file in one of the following directories:
Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows XP, Vista, 7 c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
* Right click and click on "Open With..." and then click on "Notepad" on the list.
* Remove the line that has gs.apple.com completely and save the file.

This should work fine but you will lose all music, photos, videos and books :S

Hi, none of these errors would clear on my phone - locked into restore, codes coming up all the time and then I read closer, changed the settings in Tiny Umbrella - but no chage.

Eventually loaded iTunes on different laptop, plugged in tried restore and this time it worked perfectly - something or a setting somewhere on my own pc was blocking the restore.

Thanx everyone.
