HDCP error and netflix apple tv 2

I am extremely frustrated... I've updated my firmware on my Samsung TV. I have a hdcp compliant TV and cables. I've reset/unplugged the tv and apple tv several times and I can't get rid of this error. Can anyone help me?

I have a Sony Grand Wega 60 in. and I'm streaming the Apple TV using an HDMI to DVI into the TV and fiber optic for sound. I have to do that because the TV is a little older and does not have HDMI ports. We also have the same TV, only bigger, in a different room using the same types of connection and has no trouble streaming Netflix.

I've had the apple tv for about 2 months and have had no problems streaming netflix. All of a sudden, we got the HDCP error message. The strange thing is that we have the same TV in a different room only it's a 70in TV and is sending audio and video the exact same way like mentioned above. I tried three different HDMI cables and nothing seemed to work. I even tried to take the HDMI to DVI cable from the 70in TV (which has no problems streaming Netflix) and using it on the 60in TV. No luck.

Three different cables have not worked. But changing cables wouldn't make sense since I can still download HD movies from the store on the ATV and youtube and everything else work fine. Why is it that only Netflix is having troubles?

Any help would be outstanding

What's particularly frustrating about this problem is that it's so arbitrary - sometimes Netflix streaming works, sometimes I get the HDCP error. It seems to be completely random. I have a Sony Blu-ray DVD player that also has Netflix streaming capability, and every time I get the HDCP error on the Apple TV, I simply switch over and use my Sony device to successfully stream from Netflix. The only thing that keeps me from using the Sony exclusively is that I vastly prefer the user interface on the Apple TV, and I also use the Apple TV to stream my iTunes library, look at photos, etc.

I get the impression that Apple TV is a product that Apple doesn't pay much attention to. There have been several updates since I first purchased it but none have fixed this problem. I've tried different HDMI cables and it makes no difference.

Ok, I took the next step that is more extreme. I restored my AppleTV2 and it cleared the Netflix' issue regarding HDCP error, however it now affects iTunes movie rentals. Same error message. I am not going to replace cables that worked for the past 3 years, and for the past 9 months, with my AppleTV2, I do know that there is an issue with the firmware. I will be resetting the AppleTV2 tonight to see if I can clear all errors. I will keep you posted.

I have tried everything listed in this thread. I bought a new apple tv and it worked perfectly with same tv, same wires, same receiver. The old apple tv display the HDCP error on netflix immediately after an update. Apple wants 1/3 of the price of a new unit just for a phone call to possibly fix the old unit. This is absurd. Time to bail on apple tv. I will return my working new unit and go with my DVD player or Wii for netflix.

Ok so major problem with the Hdcp error.... at this point I have trouble shot, rebooted, restored, restarted, downloaded software, plugged, unplugged, bought NEW HDMI cable.....blah blah blah !!!! and same thing Hdcp error. Took back atv got a new one. Cam home SAME stinkn' problem...now I am on a mission and this little hockey puck was NOT going to win !

THIS IS HOW I FIXED OUR PROBLEM.

  • Unplugged our 6 year old Toshiba DLP (which I looked up on line and YES our tv is HDMI ready...which I knew...and is HDCP compliant.) for 5 minutes.
  • Re-Plugged in the TV ; Checked the TV settings under HDMI and switched from Digital to AUTO
  • Re-plugged in our OLD HDMI Cable to the tv then to atv
  • Re-plugged in the atv to the outlet...then I noticed something ah ha the HDMI cable is just heavy enough to make it not sit exactilly straight in the HDMI port in the back of the TV !!! i rigged it so that the cord is taut and sitting so snug, tight, AND STRAIGHT in the port now...I am talking that the slightest FRACTION OF the cord was tilted !

I am NOT sure which of these fixed the darn thing but at least there are a few more suggestions to add to the growing number 🙂

Did a google search because I had this issue last night. SO FUSTRATED ! Now I see that it is January 3 , 2012 and this thread has had the same problem for over a YEAR ! Not a happy camper. Apple needs to fix their firmware. Not for nothing but the fixes are random as you all admit. I changed the cable last night.....and my husband got tired of waiting ....So we didn't get to see the movie rented.....SIGH....

So, after troubleshooting, it appears the the problem is my TV. I'm gonna have to figure out a work-around because I'm sure as **** not buying a new TV because the studios made Apple turn on HDCP. It kills me that after 11 months of working fine, now I have to jump through a bunch of hoops just to watch Netflix again!!!
