Airplay and videos in camera roll and photos app

Does anyone know if airplay allows you to push videos shot with the iPhone that are currently in the camera roll, or videos synced from iPhoto that are in different albums on the photos aPP?

No one would want to go though all of this. And you are correct: We should just wait for Apple to update AirPlay. It's just that is seemed like such a simple thing, I started trying to make it work, and kind of lost the point 🙂 But here's a real world example from last week of why that one missing feature from AirPlay was a disappointment:

I took my dog out for a walk, and the dog was acting crazy, jumping in the water at the pond, etc. I filmed it on my iPod Touch 4G. When I got home, I wanted to show my wife the video on the TV.

If AirPlay allowed you to directly stream video from your iPod or iPhone, I could just say, hey, watch this:
1) Turn on my AppleTV and
2) push play on the iPod touch, and bingo, there it is in 720p HD. In seconds.

Instead, I had to say, hey let me go:
1) boot up my Mac,
2) start iTunes,
3) sync my iPod (at least a few minutes for an average size video file)
4) leave my Mac and iTunes on, go back to the AppleTV,
4) locate my library on AppleTV, find the video, and then stream it

I know, I know - we're talking about a difference of a say 5-7 minutes, but it's clunky and a minor PITA. If AirPlay just allowed you to stream it directly, that would have some serious Wow factor for me.

I get your point, though. It doesn't work for now, so I should deal with it 🙂

Hello all
First let me apologize for the huge goof up on my behalf!
No I am not related to ifiles in anyway.
I, Just like u, was am very curious about this Stupid omission by apple.. not to let cam roll videos play back on airplay!

Here Is what happened:

I was at work .. tried to find an answer to this problem, came across this thread and jjw14’s reference to ifiles!

I down loaded it to give it a shot. I was able to add videos to the ifile and when I played back I saw the AirPlay icon show up.. I was convinced that it would work since apple camroll video play back does not show the Airplay icon!

In my wildest imagination I did not think that when streamed to apple tv2 it would only stream sound..
I cam home and tried it and in full embarrassment noticed that it does not work! only sound!

I tried mov, mp4 and m4v formats and imported them again in ifiles.. same result with all!

I DO APOLOGIZE BIG TIME! ( I hope at the least u are happy with ifiles for what it can do anyway.. I found it to be nice for using my iphone as a storage device for all kinds of files... hope u wont shoot me if we cross paths some day!!??)

Anyway I am amazed and shocked on how this can be! why would Apple do this? there is no reason for it!

With I tunes it is a simple matter of dragging the video files ( mov, mp4, and m4v) into the movies section and syncing the iPhone.. and all Airplay just fine!!

Even camroll Move files shot by iphone .. I just connect my iphone to usb.. go to the iphone hard drive dcim directly, drag the videos out to my desktop or a folder, then drag them from that folder in itunes movies( cant drag them from my iphone directly into itunes) .. then I sync.. they all airplay now. No conversion or anything.. just getting them in the movies section of itunes makes them work... seems it is more of a location issue rather than a file format or compression issue! ?

It is so stupid of apple to overlook this.. totally Stupid!

Equally stupid is me posting without actually testing it on apple tv 2! I was convinced that if the video plays back on my phone and shows the airplay icon, it is an indication that it would play on the tv!

Again I am sorry!

Hope apple is reading this thread!
I also wrote an email to Steve Jobs regarding this.
hope everyone does!!

MY APOLOGIES TO ALL

Hey AG007,

Don't worry about it at all. It makes sense that if you saw the AirPlay icon, you'd expect that it would work on your AppleTV. Very considerate of you to apologize, and no harm done.

I actually laughed out loud when I read that you hoped we wouldn't shoot you. Did I sound that irate in my original post? No, no. Now if the app had cost $3.99...

🙂

Good Post AG----thanks for the explanation.

So I guess I will just have to wait for official word on this----or iOS ver 4.2.2 or whatever....

And we should probably hit the product improvement and suggestion sites as well (see below)

Seems like a small change would make AirPlay and an iPhone 4 a KILLER combo----but what do I know......

Here is stuff we can do to make people in Apple aware of the issue----the more who complain----the more likely it will be addressed.

Go to the Official Apple Feedback site and list the problem---Once under connectivity----once as a general bug/malfunction-----and once as a workflow/efficiency bug. So you could basically submit 3 feedback reports: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Call AppleCare and register a complaint and ask for a case number. Your iPhone 4 automatically carries 90 days of AppleCare Free Telephone support (two years of support if you bought the additional AppleCare agreement). Use it and make a call. I did on another unrelated issue and got an official case number---Tel # 1 (800) 694-7466

Set up a call back from the AppleExpert System. It’s very easy and Apple will call you back at a time YOU choose. I have done this before and gotten a case number: http://www.apple.com/support/expert/ Explain the problem in detail----make sure they document the problem and ask them to forward the case to the Engineering Section.

Finally, you can go to the official Apple Forums right here and stay active on this thread. There are already some other threads on this problem----the more the better. Apple has a small group that peruses their official forums to identify problems. Let’s let them know this IS A PROBLEM! Be polite and stick with the facts---ask for help from forum users. http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa ... 78&start=0

And you can always do what AG did----email STEVE!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

johnrr6, let me clarify. You do not need actually need iPhoto or a Mac. This works on PC or Mac. You do have to go to iTunes and click on "Advanced > Choose Photos to Share". From there make sure "include videos" is checked. Then when you sync your videos to your Mac or PC, the videos show up on your ATV2 automatically. You don't have to even move them to iTunes. The "include videos" option was not added until iTunes 10.1 and then it wasn't actually enabled until the recent Apple TV update so a lot of people aren't actually aware of how easy it is now.

I understand that Airplay would make this all even simpler but the methods discussed in this thread are all far more complicated than the easy method Apple has already made available.

3) Newly taken photos: OK, this is nice. But still, image files are small enough that I can have them automatically synced to Flickr from my iPod touch as soon as they're snapped, and they're already available on my ATV by the time I turn it on.

Hi, How are you automatically transferring straight from your camera to flickr?

Cheers!!

Yes you do need to sync from your camera roll first. However, the point I was making was that some people were just trying to figure out how to play the videos from an iPhone on the Apple TV (using Airplay or not) and people were giving methods that were all far more complicated. They were discussing moving the files to iTunes, converting them, and other things which are all completely unnecessary ever since the update.

In reality after everything is set up properly, all you have to do is sync the videos over and they show up automatically on the Apple TV just like photos do. Of course currently if you specifically want to use Airplay, you would have to take the additional step of moving the videos over to your iTunes library so they can be played from the iPod app.

Like everyone else, I bought AppleTV so that I could stream my iPhone videos to TV quickly through Airplay!

What a big disappointment! How could Apple miss such an important feature? (Or did they do it on purpose? for what??) Who wants to stream only sound? That's lame!! We need to play back videos quickly, not go through pain of synching.
I always touted to my friends that how Apple was great in integrating products their, but this one was a huge disappointment!

Check out the app "Quickplay" (free on the app store).

It will compress a camera roll video of your choice and then airplay it to your apple tv. The compression takes tens of seconds to minutes, depending on the length of your video, but once it is done compressing you can airplay the video to your apple tv.

This is a pretty good workaround for me!
