AirPlay to Apple TV only sound and no picture to airplay option

Airplay is not working right for me or there is a setting I'm missing.

When I start a movie on my iPad or iPhone and I click the airplay icon it lets me choose between the device itself and the apple tv, however it only is for sound, no video.... Why? This is the same on the iPad and iPhone.

When I click on a picture I don't even get a airplay option at all. This is the same on both devices.

I don't see any setting for this either.

just to add to my post above, I am selecting the AirPlay icon on iPhone/iPad. I am clicking on AppleTV. Then I have to go to the AppleTV at the top of the menu and scroll up to the iTunes icons and I get (on the left) a generic icon which says untitled/unknown and when I click on that I get the sound without video. Something is wrong somewhere, must be me because this is way too awful for Apple to have released. Double checked that AirPlay is on on AppleTV. All are joined to my home network....

I can get AirPlay to play YouTube videos from my iPad onto my TV through AppleTV. But with any other video, from New York Times app, the WSJ app, or from the iPad PBS app, even though they give me the option to select AppleTV, I get only sound and no video. The airplay icon on the ATV screen say Unknown/Untitled. I've updated everything, ATV (just last night), my iMac (last week) and my iPad and iPhone (both yesterday afternoon). They all have the latest software updates. Still the only video I can view using AirPlay is YouTube.

And how are you supposed to view your photos using AppleTV and Airplay. It's described in the AirPlay product promotion on the Apple site, but there are no instructions on how to do it.

Hi Guys: Just bought the Apple TV. All updates are completed and have an HDMI
hookup. Have sound from Ipad, but no video. Also under computers, my music library comes and goes. I have to keep reinstating the home sharing to get it back. When I use the computer, it disappears. Not worried about this at the moment, but no video from Ipad is driving my crazy. Saw the post about the reset on router. Please explain if this is the problem and how to fix. Going
crazy in Florida, besides freezing.

I think/hope I may have discovered the answer everyone are looking for. The reason I wanted AppleTV was to view what was on my iPad on my TV. I went to the Apple Store 2 times regarding Apple TV and have come to the conclusion that no one in the store is familiar with the product and I find myself explaining to them how it works. They give you their interpretation to the basic information they have been giving by Apple.

I have not tried this yet as I am at work and will try tonight. The Term you should search is Mirror rather than AirPlay. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4085 This will tell you how to turn on Mirroring Option in the AirPlay function. This should send the screen of the iPad 2 or iPhone 4/4S to the TV. I am not sure about the sound but I am hoping the Videos will now be visible. I hope this work and therefore, fixes all our issues.

@ Goody64
I don't think it's supposed to work with 3rd party stuff now. you can view videos in youtube and in ipod app only i believe. http://www.macstories.net/news/airplay-notes-netflix-hulu-plus-youtube-website-a pp/
and when you are in the PBS app, WSJ app & NYT app, there is only a audio icon (speaker) right? that's why it's only streaming audio and not video.
regarding photos, select the photo (don't be in thumbnail section) and it will be in the upper right hand corner. and it's only in the Photos application, not the Camera application. If you don't see it after a few seconds, a few people just rebooted their phone and it showed up. good luck!

I had the same problem until i activated the following Video QoS (Quality of Service) Feature on my WLAN Router WNDR3700 from Netgear:

Wireless Settings -> Enable Video Network

"(For 5GHz a/n network only) Select this check box if you will be streaming HD video. When this option is selected, the router uses Video reliability algorithms to reduce jitter and packet loss during video presentations. If you will not be streaming video, leave this check box unchecked."

Does anyone know if i can use air Play From my apple tv (second gen) to my ipad for sound only.
(I have the newest ios for ipad and the new version for apple tv.)
I know i can use the tv speakers. But i want to do just the opposite. i want to play my netflix on my apple tv and "wifi stream in any way" the sound to the ipad or iphone so that i dont disturb others with the sound. But i get the benefits of the big screen.

Oh yeah i dont want to buy the airport express. I already have plenty of wireless routers.

CAn someone please help
