Airplay support on iPhone 3GS??

So I've updated to 4.2.1 on my 3GS, but I cannot find an Airplay button on my 3GS when playing video or audio. I have an iMac & 2 x AppleTVs all wireless. I can re-direct output from my iMac to either of my AppleTVs, but nothing on the 3GS...any ideas anyone? Also, although I have a shared printer the 3GS cannot find the printer either...feeling a bit like a damp squib to me at the moment... 😟

I had the same problem with my 3GS. I installed 4.2.1 and the Airplay button was nowhere to be found. I did all the restart procedures and turning off and on the WiFi but still no go. Then I realized that my AppleTV(v2) was in sleep mode and off. I had to wake it up and then iTunes and my 3GS had the airplay symbol. Sounds dumb but make sure your apple tv is ON before you try to AirPlay lol

I have the iPhone 3GS (U.S.) and recently upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 (and I have in fact rebooted my phone several times since updating the OS). I have a 2-year old Airport Express w/AirPlay for wi-fi. I just tried the AirPlay for the first time (from my iPhone) and it works. For those having trouble finding the connectivity controls, you have to double-click the home button, swipe right a few times and go past the iPod controls. There you'll find the AirPlay function. You can choose your wi-fi network from the little rectangle/arrow icon. Hope this helps.

Yeah Mine was the same for days and I just did the following and it now works. I hasten to add that I have an iPod touch that worked immediately when updated. By this I mean I had two units in the same room and one worked and the other didn't.
What I did may seem random and I'm not absolutely sure what particular thing I did that made it work but here goes try this.
1. Completely close down and restart phone by holding down both buttons on phone for more than 10 seconds.
2.Make sure your Air Express is on.
3. Turn Wi-Fi on phone OFF then ON
4.Go to iPod Settings in SETTINGS app on your phone. Switch off 'Lyric and Podcast Info' I also switched off 'Widescreen' (Not sure it was this but hey).
My Airplay worked after step 4.

This is by far my favorite new feature of the new software. I enjoy streaming audio and archived radio programs from a radio station in LA and of course Pandora, but I could never stream those things from my iTunes to my Airport Express. Now, I can! Using my iPhone.

But it seems to be a little buggy. Here is the situation. I have found that if I've already got an audio app or itunes running when I enter my apartment (like on my headphones) and I want to switch to the stereo speakers using my airport express, I have to restart the iphone for the iphone to recognize that I have an express on my wifi. At least that is what I thought yesterday.

It seems, however, that upon waking up this morning things are different. I was playing music from an audio app last night (KCRW if you are curious) and it was working fine. There was that little rectangular icon to the right of my volume slider that, if tapped, shows me my AirPlay options. I stopped the audio last night, did not shut the app, plugged in my phone to charge, and went to bed. Now, this morning, I went back to the app and opened a different music program in the same app to play, assuming that the AirPlay options icon would still be there. It wasn't. I started the music on my iPhone and it began playing, but within about a minute or so, that icon showed up and I could select my Airport Express.

Conclusion: It takes a few moments for the 3GS (not sure about 4) to recognize all the devices on a wireless network. If it fails to recognize any airplay devices and you don't get the icon within a few minutes, then restart the iPhone and you should be ok. Still my favorite new feature.
