iPhone 3G better performance on iOS 4.2?

So I didn't know 4.2 was coming today and I downgraded my moms 3G to 3.1.3 yesterday. It's night and day from iOS 4.0 which is what she had. Of course she lost her contact and pics but I can get it back once I update to the newest version. I wanted to know before I updated to 4.2 to see how it's working on everyones iPhone 3G. How's it responding to open safari, settings, apps, texting, emails? Thanks!!!!

I would suggest to all a reset of the iPhone before attaching to iTunes 10.1.

Reset being Home and Power/Sleep button held together for 10 secs or so until the Apple logo appears.
Wait till the phone is fully booted then connect and Restore under Summery/Version tab ( NOT as a new phone) and the update will come up.

Mine went from 3.2 to 4.1 in about 45 mins, not including reloading media.
It is noticeably faster and responsive for the most part. The calendar slowness that some have pointed out, I do see as well. I think I can wait the second.

My performance after upgrading is noticably slower. Even just typing in my passcode has a lag. The calendar is still very slow and safari is slower also. There may be some apps that are faster, but in my day to day interactions, I have not detected anything that is faster and I have seen a lot that is slower. There just seems to be lags everywhere.

Dellskin, the same things happened to my phone and my husband's phone--passcode was laggy, calendar was laggy, etc. Even the iPod app was slow. When I downgraded my husband's phone back to 3.1.3, he almost couldn't believe the speed difference. I like to take advantage of new updates but not when the update is going to slow down my phone to a crawl. I bought the 3G iPhone knowing its capabilities, so I will remain happy with it at 3.1.3, especially since I now know the limitations of the 4.0 updates. I'm not ruling out getting a new iPhone this coming summer (assuming one is released--I have no reason to think it won't be), but I will also consider Android. The only disadvantage to 3.1.3 is I have to keep a close watch on my apps to make sure I don't accidentally update one that will now only work with the 4.0 updates. But I don't mind doing that since I have my speedy phone back!

If you are on 3.13 which I went back to after the nightmare of 4.1, dont think 4.2 is the answer you've been looking for. My mate put it on his 3g 16GB phone and, well, I cant print what he said.

I went over to Apple as this was the sort of rubbish you'd expect from Microsoft but Apple are catching up fast sadly.

Not buying a new i phone just to get the software.

Avoid.

4.2.1 is only slightly not as bad as the ridiculous "update" to 4.0. things are not quite as slow as they were with 4.0/4.1, but still not as fast as it was prior to the 4.0 update. my phone finally recognizes my wifi at home so that's nice-i shouldn't be so excited for my phone actually doing what it's supposed to. but now i can't connect to voicemail. RAD! if i would've known how poorly apple would handle this i would not have "updated" to the 4.0, 4.1 and/or 4.2. i've been told by the "genious bar" kids that I should just get the iphone4. nice job apple.
good luck with your decision!!

Well, I'm at the Genius Bar now. They've recommended a complete wipe/restore, but won't provide downgrade to 3.1.3. I'm presently installing as a 'new' iPhone. Claimed to have some software corruption, potentially due to upgrade - mine was 3.1.3 to 4.1 to 4.2. Update later on any improvement.

I did a restore as a new phone - I even did a secure wipe - it did run better for a few days, but is back to running like crap.

Same Same Same story once again with iPhone4
Same happened to me earlier with 3Gs (battery life) after and update officially launched and lots of advertising found new update is bad! Battery goes really faster and faster!

Now i believe we should keep silence until Apple get this fixed and God knows how long will takes!

Pay more for expensive mobile and get more headache!!!

Cheers guys (:

OK, so the complete wipe failed to improve speed. I gave up after a few hours and reinstalled my pre-wipe backup. All fine, except for the speed, of course. Spoke to AT&T yesterday, asking for help. Suggested either a 3.1.3 G3 (even refurb) of G3S (also refurb OK) as a 1:1 swap for my device - no contract extension or $. Nope. I'm off contract, so additional wrangling seems useless. I'll sell the 3G on ebay and get an Android on a different carrier. So many choices!
