I kinda wonder if moving the lock feature isn't a way of teaching users about the multitasking.

Normally would you ever really double click the home button unless you were told that something was under it?

Now I'm forced into the habit to find the **** lock switch. Ultimately it would have been nice for be to decide what functionality I wanted to give to the switch. Whether I wanted it as a mute switch for only notifications, a full on mute switch, or a lock switch.

Maybe the move was forced because they wanted the iphone and the ipad to behave similarly, but failing to realize that HOW people use them are completely different. On the iphone I want a mute switch for that stuff, but on the ipad I really don't need one.

Personally I think Apple will go the 'let the users decide route', but only in a future update after a million or so complaints.

I think its understandable that this is a BIG issue because it changes how people currently use it.

When you take something away its usually far worse than just breaking a promise of what you intend to give them. I think people are willing to accept that its just a temporary delay until we get shared printer support.

With the lock switch they took something that a lot of people loved, and were comfortable with and they wrecked it for those people. I find it ironic since I know people who bought the ipad partially because it had a lock switch (iphone users who were used to fighting with it).

Printopia is a fully satisfactory solution to the airprint thing, at least for now, whereas there's no workaround for this. And all the evidence points to a possible resolution of the airprint problem with more printers being added in the future, while there's nothing to indicate that the switch function change is only a temporary annoyance.

I've been reading through this message board and can see the pros and cons for changing the switch to a mute button. However, the cons outweigh the pros. The switch is instant. I didn't have to double tap this and swipe that to get to a button to lock the screen. It was right there on the side of the pad. A great point one of you made was how this function worked excellently when in a vehicle and one needed to check the best route. A quick flick of the switch and rotation of the screen allowed for viewing of a wider area in any direction.
The point I'm making is, it was far more convenient before than the current allocation of the button.

Another problem is that if you have it LOCKED and want to watch a movie..
and oops... it's in the wrong mode.. I need to quit the movie first and then
the taskbar to disable the thing.
then find my movie again.. since double tap doesn't work with the movies I played so far..

Documents... font is changing when you need to flip them. need to lock again..

I bet there are going to be people complaining, the the darn button is not working at all anymore.

just make a darn setting in the setup, to select your choice what you want to do with the button..

OK, 2 things. firstly, you don't have to quit the movie or any app, you just double tap quickly and you're there showing the MT bar with the movie still on-screen. Secondly, simple answer is DON'T lock it then. I have never locked the orienation once in 6 months. Sorry, I tried it out once, but that was it.

First, I suppos that the reason you have used rotation lock once in past 6 months would becaus you do use the iPad to hear music not surfing or writing or taking notes or reading. Well 800$ is lot of money for an iPod.

Secondly, you are minority, not majority, so if you have not used it, dose not mean all the iPad users do like you.

Thirdly, as an iPad user, minority not majority, I would like to add my feed back on this topic.
So I think rotation lock is more useful for two reasons, first, it is easier than double click and slide and ....
further, when I take notes during my class, it is not comfortable for me to stop typing and double click then slide the screen after that find the bottom and lock it.

I feel so disappointed with this change, and I also hope, someone in charge read my topic, and if they are others with the asme opinion, change the mute bottom to rotation lock, in the next update.
Thanks
Kian

I would suggest you to read carefully what I have mentioned, previously.
First, I published my personal opinion, as minority not majority. I don't claim that all users think like me, but I don't think that all iPad users, agree with what have been stated, in the last topic..
Secondly, such a topic should provide readers with essential information, not repetition.
Finally, please keep inform that, what you say is just an opinion, so i am not going to discuss about individual opinion, cause this is just an opinion, but if you want to convince some one with real information, please provide use with proof, not only your own as representative of all users in the world.

First, Thanks pka4916 for starting this thread! I was about to lose my mind when I found the lock screen option was changed! Secondly, Thanks to all of you who offered the alternative solution to locking the screen... That calmed me a great deal 🙂 Although, I'm very greatful this option still exists, I'm not at all thrilled about it's location and all the steps I have to go through to get there! Well, I'm off to explore more of the new updates!

So everybody is the minority? Or do you not know the difference?

I really believe that 75% either never knew what that button was for or never used it and really don't care. There is a very vocal group of people who apparently used it a hundred times a day, although I cannot fathom why. They are upset with the change but as you said they are a minority. There are those who didn't use the switch much but wanted a quick way to turn off system sounds. They are now happy. They are also probably a minority.

I'm sure by now you have sent in your official Feedback to Apple. That is about all you can do.
