How to get the switch back to LOCK mode

FWIW, prior to 4.2, 100% of my usage was web browsing, email, chess, Solitaire or watching movies. I use landscape orientation exclusively. I never rotated my iPad while doing so and therefore I never had a reason to lock the screen. I never once touched the switch.

With 4.2, my usage hasn't changed except that I now have Pandora running in the background (except of course when watching a movie). Normally the alerts don't bother me but when I get real serious with a movie and I put on headphones, the alerts are a nuisance and I mute them and the switch makesmit real easy.

I use the lock constantly as many of the pdf file I read have landscape figures and you do not want the the screen to rotate. As many of these pdfs are scans of very old documents some are easier to read on way, some the other. I am constantly going back and forth and I use that lock switch all the time.

I feel sorry that you do not understand what I am talking about. and I do not wish to convert this topic to a chat area. so if you have further questions please email me and I will answer you. Please let this topic keep going as a pleasant place for respectful iPad users in order to share their opinion on this specific subject.

I have sent my feedback, and I have downgrade my iPad too.
but, I agree with previous users, apple could give the option to shift between mute and lock function for it's users. I think this is a fair solution.

Great news! Well i read an article that says if you heat up your iPad to a high enough temperature, you can revert the switch function back to screen lock. it says " if using a microwave, get your head as close to or inside of the the microwave oven." It also adds, if you "spin the ipad for 20 minutes you will confuse the sensors and revert the switch function." good luck friends. now there is some hope!

Yes, you have a choice:
1) go back to 3.2.2 and lose folders, unified Inbox, multi-tasking, Airprint, Airplay, note syncing, a useful (to some) mute switch, etc.etc., or
2) have all these features in 4.2, and spend an extra 2 seconds locking screen orientation compared to before.
Hmmmmm.... now which one would I choose?

love my iPad but don't want to upgrade to latest OS because of this !
not having the lock button is a pain in the ....
hope apple people live in the real world and it'll be somehow corrected.

Has it occurred to anyone else that they're wasting way more time complaining about a truly nitnoi issue than they'd ever have to devote to locking their screen in the ( *Gasp! The horror!* ) new way?

Versus one simple flick of a switch. You just drove the point home for why I loathe this new feature.

I'm curious - is there anyone who mutes notifications so often that they require the use of a dedicated switch? I have not needed, ever, to mute notifications. Ever. I've had the iPad since June, and never during that time did the thought even occur to me that such a feature would be helpful in any way.

As far as locking orientation, I've done that countless times. So now I have a dedicated switch for something I never use, and now 2 taps, a slide, and one tap to use a feature I engage all the time.

But I'm not bitter, no not at all! 😀
