How do i fix error 1013

can someone help me with this error i cant use my iphone now because its stuck in recovery mode all i can do is keep restoring an updating!

Asus, iPhone OS 3.1.3

I have the same error. Did a permission repair, re-install iTune10.1, still can't resolve the error. I had this error on my Macbook Pro, latest OSX, and currently trying to restore from iMac. Will report soon. very frustrating and waste of time.

OK. To report back, since Apple troubleshooting guide does not help much.
I managed to restore the iPhone using another Mac (iMac). So it must have been my MacBook Pro or the itunes in there that is causing problem.

TinyUmbrella does not help for my error 1013 on iPhone 4, only different iMac helped. I am going to delete and re-install my iTunes on MacBook Pro just in case, since I have a couple more iPhones and an iPad to update.
BTW, anti-virus software would not be the problem cause I have the same installed on the iMac.

You tried another computer, made sure you are using the USB on the computer itself and not a hub, and have any firewall and/or anti-virus software disabled? While a 1013 error generally refers to a hardware issue, many have said they are taking care of it with software that can kick the phone out of recovery.

I'm sorry, I don't have any futher ideas. I saw you posted in another thread where someone was successful in updating despite the same error. I just say you will need to keep watching here for any other possible solutions.

So I encountered iphone 4 problem. Tried to install from my windows PC and unable to restore. Brought the phone to my wife's windows XP machine and did a restore then reattached to my computer and restored and works fine. This seems to work with windows for this error

I had the same error using my Mac Mini. I have never jailbroken my iPhone 4 and kept getting the phone in recovery mode. Tried the /etc/hosts but that didn't work. I started to think that the downloaded update was corrupt. So I went to my PC (what a joke since I believe in Mac) laptop. I upgraded iTunes on the PC and then connected my (in Restore mode) iPhone 4. Then iTunes downloaded the 4.2 update. During the update process, the PC lost the connection with iPhone 4. I reconnected it and it went thru the restore process only this time it already had the 4.2 update, so it didn't go into a download phase. It was able to go thru the whole restore process and iTunes gave me back my iPhone 4 in 4.2 mode. I then took it back to my Mac Mini and restored from a backup. What a pain in the #!&@!!!
Moral of this story is go to another computer to restore.

I had this same problem and when I called apple they told me that it was a hardware issue and i needed to get my phone replaced. I'm all about that, but I need my phone now! So being the tech savvy mom that I am decided to try and fix it myself. First, I took my cord out of the hub and plugged it directly into my mac. Then, I downloaded tinyumbrella and tried to kick it out of recovery mode, after that didn't work I tried to restore through itunes....again...that didn't work. Next, I went to my PC laptop and updated my itunes there, now I am waiting for the software 4.2.1 to download to try there....I hope this works...

ok so updating it on my PC laptop did the trick. ugh but then I try and restore my old data from my mac and it jumps back into giving me this code! Anyone know how to restore your old data without totally restoring it?

You have to edit the Host file in either mac or windows. Make sure that if you use TinyUmbrella to kick out of recovery mode, go back to your Host file and delete the "...gs.apple.com" lines, because TinyUmbrella will add the line back.

Weird but I had to use my pc downstairs to restore it, and received no error. I had no hosts file changed and tiny umnbrella would kick out of recovery to a black screen, where it would enter recovery again.
Never had to do that before, and have had many iphone errors =D

ok i found this out last night my fix was i went to http://www.redmondpie.com/download-ios-4.2.1-iphone-4-3gs-3g-ipad-ipod-touch-fin al-version/ then scroll down an click on the iphone you have then you download the software then when on itunes hold shift then click restore then click the file you downloaded then it should work! only on windows tho

Hi, I have a 4G which I tried to update to 4.2.1. It's sim lock free so no jailbreak.
Same story, the error 1013 showed up all the time...
At the end I used my GFs Laptop (running on Windows!!!) to get it updated.

How embarrassing is that? You pay mega bucks for a free iPhone and a MacBook and at the end Bill has to help you out!? 😉

So if you are facing error 1013 just try another machine!

Thought you folks would like to know that I finally fixed my iphone recovery mode 1013 error. I learned that their are two gs.apple.com servers. I found out which server I was connecting to and decided to try the other server. I added the below entry in my hosts files. I did a recovery and it worked. NOW, what on earth is going on with apple gs.apple.com server 17.112.176.11? gs.apple.com 17.151.36.30 worked for me. Keep in mind, my phone is a normal stock phone with only apple store apps. my phone is not gail broken and I do not use tiny umbrella or related utilities.Problems began with the release prior to the current one.
