iPad won't sync photos

I just upgraded to 4.2 and my iPad will no longer sync my photos from iPhoto.

They synced just fine before I upgraded but now I get an error:

"Some of your photos, including the photo "IMG_1402.JPG, were not copied to the iPad because they cannot be displayed on your iPad."

Some details:

-these photos synced just fine before I upgraded to 4.2
-the photos are all in my iPhoto library
- I recently had the hard drive on my imac die so it was just replaced with a new one
- I used Time Machine to restore my system

Any help is appreciated.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.7), 20", 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 Gb RAM

I just spoke to Apple - they are aware of the issue, but no timing as to when a fix may occur. My photos were syncing fine on all my Apple devices from Windows 7, including the iPad2, but not my new iPad (3). I have over 10,000 photos, in about 70 folders under "My Pictures". If I check "selected folders" in iTunes for my new iPad (3) and sync them one at a time, it works fine, albeit a pain in the rear.

Seems to be an issue with photo optimization in the iPod Cache. By the way - deleting the cache and rebuilding - and trying to sync all 10,000 photo's didn't work, after repeated attemps with restarts, resets, etc.

Good luck!

This is a copy/paste from my original reply in another post of the same problem, hope this helps you guys.

Hi All,

This is somewhat of a (re)introduction as well as its been a LONG time since i have been here, nice to meet you all again 🙂

Today I bought the new iPad after owning the original iPad for 2 years, and this is after some serious deliberation whether to or not. I am a mutual Android and Apple fan, both has their strengths and problems, but after much deliberations I decided to take the plunge again with Apple for my tablet choice. I already have the Samsung Galaxy Note so I thought Apple iPad would continue to compliment my 'tech needs'.

After unboxing my new iPad i proceeded to re-sync it to the back up that i had made from the previous iPad, and to much despair I too hit this sync problem for photos. The best attempt got me 12 photos out of 860, the worst being 3 and the whole experience was beginning to irk me to say the least.

I tried a combination of deleting the iPod Cache Folder, resetting sync history, resetting iPad to factory again and started from scratch but all to no avail and I was beginning to give up.

I gave it one final shot and the below are exactly what I did with this final attempt:

  1. Deleted .iTunes Preferences.plist file in the itune folder
  2. Turned off Wifi on my iPad
  3. Created a brand new folder to house my photo library that i intended on syncing with the iPad
  4. Moved all of the photos into the folder created in step 3 and deleted the old folder
  5. Reset sync history via edit - preference - device
  6. Reselected the folder that i want to sync from within iTunes (at which point it poped up a message to say that all photos will be replaced with photos in this location) or to that effect.
  7. It synched all 860 photos that i wanted to sync first time.

After checking the whole environment, I can see that iTunes recreated a new plist file from step 1, also all iPod Cache folders contained 'ithmb' files that has a positive file size (whereas before they were all 0bytes).

I couldn't believe it and I am now a very happy owner of the new iPad.

I cannot guarantee that all 7 steps are necessary in fixing this, but I am fixed of the problem as described in this post. I did not have to resize photos or put things in folder with smaller number of files. Just what i did in those 7 steps.

I wish you all good luck and if you have any questions, then please feel free to ask me. 😉

I have tried all the mentioned methods and it simply will not sync. The iPad seems to freeze every time, only had my ipad3 a week and it has not had a full sync yet. Alway freezes on the photos. Never had a problems with anything we, iPod, ipad1 or iPhone. I'm getting so frustrated, use it for business and feel like I've lost a limb

I hear and feel everyone's pain. Most of all the great suggestions that worked for others simply did not work for me. But I DID finally fix my issue of some pictures refusing to sync with my iPad 3 and brand new iMac all running the latest and greatest. So I dragged the event with the problem photos to the desktop and discovered they were all missing the photo icon...just a generic white icon was all that was there. Even though the .jpg file extension and all other issues checked normally. I opened each one by double clicking and Preview would launch and open the picture even though I could not get Preview to launch/open through the GET INFO box. Once each picture was opened, I would then SAVE the file in Preview and viola! the photo icon was restored and then putting these back into iPhoto and resyncing with iPad fixed all my missing photos. I have searched tons of message boards with lots of good ideas but unfortunately, none of those ideas had worked for me and was tiring of the whole mess. Hopefully this simple trick will help someone.
