Iphone 3GS 4.2.1 problem-battery

Hello every one, at first I' sory for my English, I know it's not perfect.
I saw many topics with same problem, but I cant fix it 😟

I instaled the 4.2.1 software and after that my battery in my Iphone 3GS is weaker..

Before update I could use my Iphone a day with, now I need to charge it ;/

Let me show you:
Almost every day I had full charged ( from 10% or less to 100%) Iphone at morning beacuse I was charging him at night.

Now I have charged my Iphone from 0% to 100% and atm I have :
Usage : 3h 39min
Standby: 7h 15min
I want to added that at morning I was using my Iphone for 10min at internet and battery was 100% after that was 93%, 2min later 89%. OMG!
Before I could use it for 5 or more hours and I was in standby mode for 24h or more.

What I was doing on Iphone?
Internet-2h
Games -30min
Calls- 10min
Messages-20min
Doing something with Iphone -39min

I was 2h on Internet but I have turned off 3G and WI-FI so it was normal GSM connection with internet.
All push, notifacations, GPS etc etc were OFF.
Screen at 50% brightness.

I had restored my Iphone many times.
As a new Iphone
With a backup, nothing have changed.

What can I do ?
Can some one help me ?

Now I need to charge my Iphone twice a day !
It ***** a lot.

Please help me.

Greeting from Poland!

Exactly i have the same problem from Day 1 when i upgraded my Iphone 3g and Ipad to ios4.2

iPhone 3G and iPad shows the same behaviour. When i plug-in to it's respective wall adapter it will show charging for couple of mins and then go off charge. When i check after couple of hours beliveing that it would have full charged i can see that it has charged some 5% more.

But when connected to PC, charging works perfectly.

Someone please shed light on this, is it a known bug on iOS4.2?

It's not a known bug in 4.2, but it could be a bad wall charger or a bad cable. Another possibility is if the phone gets very hot when on the wall charger; this could indicate that there's a runaway application on the phone, and the thermal overload protection is turning off the charging. It wouldn't happen on a computer because computers do not supply as much current as a wall charger.

Thanks for your reply.

I have 2 adapters one for iphone and one for ipad, and i have 3 usb dock cables, and all shows up the same behavior. There is a very slim chance of all of them going bad at once.

The application in the phone and Ipad are same as when i had ios4.1. When i had ios 4.1 charging was perfect. the time i updated ios4.2 i'm facingthis problem which hade made me beleive that ios4.2 has a problem.

Hey all,

Idk if anyone has every tried this but for me it has been working wonders. I guess it is because of the iPhone 3GS multitasking features that could be draining the battery. You might have several apps open and not even know it. They may be running in the background and eating up your battery. So you need to make sure you close the apps every time you are done using them.

This is how you close apps, even mail, phone, calculator, basically anything on your phone.
*You go to your home screen and click down on the home button twice fairly quickly.*

*If anything is open (and it most likely will be) you will then see a row of icons at the bottom of your screen.*

*Hold your finger on an icon until it wiggles.*

*You will see a red minus sign on the icons. Put your finger on the minus sign of each of the icons until they disappear.*

*Do this until all icons are gone. Then press home key once again and all apps are closed.*

*Do this every time you use ANY app to close it and your battery will last longer.*

My battery was draining really fast and now it lasts all day and night long and I don't have to charge it until the middle of the next day.
I hope it helps you all too.

It's hard to believe it's 4.2, because if it were there would be millions of complaints about it. I've only seen 2 or 3, and they symptoms even for those are all different. Its possible that 4.2.1 on your phone is corrupted; the best way to check that is to go to Settings/General/Reset - erase all content and settings, then Restore in iTunes. If your phone is jailbroken somewhere in that process the OS could be corrupted. And it's possible that it is dirt or moisture in the dock connector on the phone, so try cleaning it.

Actually I've seen quite a few people complain about this. Since it affected my iPhone and my sister's as well, I called Apple Care Support who confirmed to me that it was most likely because of the multi-tasking feature. She wanted me to try closing all applications running by using the method I described earlier. If it didn't help, then I was to call back within 24 hours and they would revisit the issue. Perhaps send me a new phone.
However closing the apps like I described has immensely helped increase my battery life so I haven't needed to call back Apple Care.
My phone is not jailbroken and I have tried the resetting and erasing, resetting the network, clearing history, cookies and cache etc but the only thing that has worked is making sure all apps are closed.

Thanks Lawrence for your reply.

None of my apple device are jailbroken.

If i think that my iOS4.2 is corrupted, i have iPhone3g and ipad and both are showing this behaviour starting from same time from day 1 of the 4.2 upgrade. if think multitasking may be the culprit, iphone 3g has no multitasking and ipad has multitasking and both have problem now on charging now.

Any how, i have only one way now, to erase and restore again. Will try that.
Please let me know how do i go back to iOS 4.1 on my iPhone3G? I dont want 4.2 on iphone 3g as i have to switch on PC every time to charge it now.

I have the same problem on my iPhone 3GS too after I upgrade on iOS 4.2.1.
I off the 3G and Data Cellular, my 3GS only last 1.5 days with standard apps from factory.

Restore many times as new phone and even reset settings - problem remain the same.
This is really make me wanted to switch to Android.

It already been weeks and problem still remain as I read the other threads there is no solution and Apple said is not phone and ios problem.

Any help over here?

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Android phones almost universally get worse battery life than the iPhone.

If you have only the standard apps it is likely the mail app is what is using energy, especially if you have a Push account. If you actually read the other threads there are many solutions posted, which is appropriate because there are many different problems. If you try some of the posted solutions it will probably fix your phone.

Out of curiosity, what was your battery life before you updated? 1.5 days is pretty good for an iPhone that is used even moderately.

I didnt set any email or any notification as this iPhone 3GS is my backup phone which only use for phone call once a while.

I charged mine iPhone 3GS at night 1:00 AM (100%) and by morning 7:00 AM (78%) without using anything.
While my main phone (iPhone 4) with 3G on and full of notification only used 5% during this 6 hours night time.

This is really abnormal for a battery life and this doesnt happen on earlier iOS for this iPhone 3GS.

I restored with new firmware iOS4.2.1 as I suspected could be iOS firmware corrupted but still the same issue 😟

Hi, I had the same problem with my iPhone 3GS 32GB on iOS 4.2.1.
Covered by apple protection care, I called the apple hotline.
Their advice was to reset the iPhone (e.g. holding the home button and the standby button until the apple logo appears, just ignoring the shut off slider).
This procedure just cleared the memory, but didn't erase any data.
Now I am back to long battery times like before.

Just wanted to thank Lawrence and alli3katt for their tips. I was having a problem no one else has posted to this thread (maybe it is elsewhere, I found this thread by doing a generic search on problems with 4.2.1): my iPhone kept dropping my wifi network connection, which is probably why it kept failing to sync with Appigo Sync on my computer. I was also having quicker battery drain, though not as severe as some of the folks on this thread mentioned. In any event, resetting all settings seems to have fixed it. Very happy about that!

Cheers,

Geoffrey
