They lied to you, go back to Japan and take it up with them.

it is not illegal to unlock an iphone or unlock the network carrier so no the apple tech would not lose his job over this as he was probably gettin the nstructions from apples tech support network that is only accesable from apple stores...

This is actually completly true. I work for Telus in Canada and my friend was given a iphone 4 in the states. She lives here in canada and the phone was locked to at&t... all i had to do was call at&t and give them the info about the previous owner and then the lady unlcoked the phone for me. It works for any carrier now:)

Your information is somewhat faulty. Apple has not choice in the matter. If it is carrier locked, ONLY the carrier can legally authorize unlocking it.

In the US, it is not a crime for an individual to modify the firmware of the phone to unlock it. It will, however void the warranty. An Apple employee can not initiate an unlock of an iPhone without a request originating from the carrier it is locked to.
