MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

I was using my computer just fine (2007 MBP core 2 duo) all day. Put it to sleep came back after 30 minutes and tried to wake it and it's dead. I held down the power key to shut it down then tried to restart no luck. No start up chime, no screen, keyboard seems dead as well (caps lock light does not light up), HD does not start up. The only signs of life are the white light on the screen latch that is now on, the fans are spinning and the DVD drive seems to work.

Reset the power management module and zapped the PRAM, no luck.

Sorry! Don't know why the link didn't work.

I think your plan is exactly right. Go get a diagnosis and then take it to Apple and see what you can do to get it fixed. Again, thebhoydave1888's information was very helpful to me (though I ended up not needing anything but the encouragement to try.

This is the page to which I was trying to link:

MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues

Products Affected

MacBook Pro, models with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors

Symptoms

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within four years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

What to look for:

  • Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
  • No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on

Specific products affected:

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch and 17-inch models with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors
    • MacBook Pro (17-Inch, 2.4GHz)
    • MacBook Pro (15-Inch, 2.4/2.2GHz)
    • MacBook Pro (Early 2008)
  • These computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008

Resolution

If your MacBook Pro is exhibiting any of the symptoms listed above, please take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Before visiting the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store, please make a reservation (available in some countries only).

Apple is issuing refunds to customers who may have paid for repairs related to this issue. Please contact Apple for details on the refund process.

Note: If your MacBook Pro is not experiencing any of these symptoms, you do not need to contact Apple.

Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed.

My late 2007 packed up last year (just fitted a 1TB drive and upped the RAM). Had a new logicboard for £500 (around $750 - we do not get US deals over here). It lasted four months before the new one went - out of its three month warranty of course.

My Early 2008 MacBook Pro just died this weekend. 😟 It has been running hot for a while and it seems to be following the same pattern where it goes to sleep and never wakes up again.

2007-2008 MBP .... symptoms you describe ..... you can resurrect them

http://russell.heistuman.com/2010/04/27/cooking-the-books-or-baking-my-macbook-p ro-logic-board/

Sounds absurd, but it does work !!! It's not permanent though. Mine (2007) is on about it's 6th bake over about a 2 year period, but it is still going. (170C fan forced, 7 1/2 mins)

Might not be worth the effort or the hassle to some, but if you love your old MBP, and would like to see working again, then give it a go.......what have you got to lose, the logic board is otherwise junk anyway !

If you get it working again, install SMC Fan Control and do you best to keep it cool .... flash games and video are a killer !

Toxic smoke should not be an issue if you keep the temperatures to recommendations.

It would be prudent, as always, to ventilate your "cooking" area, but a vent hood that sends the air outside should suffice. If your over-stove hood simply re-circulates, you may want to reconsider, or just plan on not being in the room while cooking it. Perhaps a friend or neighbor's stove with an outside-venting hood would be better.

Well, I've just been told that the logic board, display and airport card on my 15" mid 2009 macbook pro have failed and that the computer is beyond economical repair. I bought it in Jan 2010 so I got just over 4 years use out of it . Totally unacceptable for a so-called premium product. Thinking about a replacement, and, as much as I love Mac OSX, I'm considering buying a top end windows based laptop. Half the price. I've lost confidence in Apple's quality.

Unfortunately my MacBook Pro has the same motherboard issue discussed here. They refused to repair it for free of charge. Repair cost is about $900...

Absolutely unbelievable... They are saying that mine was manufactured early 2011, so they won't repair for free. How is that fair? It is the same freaking problem. Video gives up machine freezes, impossible to use it. I have been left alone with this for a month, support said they will look into it. No response from Apple support since... I called them at least three times. They haven't even bothered letting me know for a month now...

I paid $2400 for it and looked after it really well.

I can't believe they are selling such a low quality board for such a high price. I have an 8 years old Fujitsu Siemens laptop that still works fine. I have worked in electronics manufacturing and with computers for 15 years. This is the first motherboard that died...

Why don't they fix mine just as well they have done for others?

Second dead logic board on my rMBP. The dedicated graphics card of my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro 15" just died. Temperatures were fine, fans clean and even sitting on a cooling pad.

I had the bad LG panel which was replaced in 2012, in 2013 the logic board was replaced because of constant "invalid node structure" errors which resulted in total data loss. Then I was unable to reinstall OS X ML because of "you don't own this product" error, which it was shipped with and I had reinstalled about 20 times without any problems before and the support told me "you have a 2000+€ machine, why do you mind about the 20€ just buy it again".

This laptop has been a disappointment since the first day.

Oh and before I forget: when they replaced my logic board they destroyed the screw heads of the heat pipe and scratched it while tightening them with pliers 🙂 now I know what "certified by Apple" really means.

No AppleCare so I'll have to pay for sure.

I am hoping for some advice from this forum. I bought my MacBook Pro early 2011, just says just failed on me - would not switch on. I took it to the Genius Bar who told me there was liquid in it and I needed a new logic board £400!! Only I have never spilled anythinI on it or near it!?! Please help!! I'm wondering if its a faulty board. I've read lots about faults from 2011?!

AGREED

its really sickening and i am genuinely ANGRY at Apple for refusing to recall 2010/2011 models which are OBVIOUSLY defective. I cannot afford ANOTHER (yes another...) 350 pounds to fix my logic board when I know my laptop is doomed. This is not right and my hard work (documentaries abroad etc) had been corrupted in a previous problem with the same model where my hard-drive had to be replaced- everything lost.

Jan 13, 2015 1:52 PM in response to Roxydee17

There is no liquid in it

I sat for 2 hours with the managers in my genius bar until THEY ADMITTED that 2011 models were faulty and defective and my model would always be this way and that 'they really should be recalled'

After she admitted this I asked her to fix my problem for free- an Apple representative admitting to such a large corruption in their system should surely then offer some compensation? Nope....400 pounds that I cant and wont spend.

Has anyone had their MacBook Pro repaired multiple times under this extension program? I had my 15" MacBook Pro Early 2011 repaired about 7 months ago because of a logic board failure and paid $310 out of pocket. I was then contacted by Apple about the repair program and reimbursed for the full cost of my repair, and there was much rejoicing. Now, the old problems are starting to rear their ugly head again, and I am afraid another repair is eminent. The big question is, will they repair it this time for free since it is still under the extended warranty period, or is the program only good for one free replacement?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I have had this computer--MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)--for a year and already have had to send it in TWICE.

First time the mic/audio jack stopped working and they traced it to the logic board and replaced it. This was July 7, 2015. Then, a month later, the computer started crashing. Specifically, an Apple Genius tells me it was Kernel Panicking. So I had to send it in AGAIN for a second logic board. Huge inconvenience to have the computer out of my hands for a couple weeks, not to mention all the time wasted on the phone with a rep. going through test after test after test.

Fortunately, by some fluke, I bought AppleCare and plan to keep paying for it. Do they let you renew it? I have bought and used Macs since 1985 and have never bought AppleCare before now. The salesmen talked me into it and now I know why.

I think this is the end of my relationship with Apple. The shine is gone. I plan to start unplugging from them: goodbye to iPhones for the family, iPads, iTunes. I'll go PC after this Pro dies is last death.
