MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

Consumer Reports does surveys of its subscribers, and their experiences with many manufacturers' products. Their statisticians block the use of any data group (good or bad) that does not have a large enough sample size to be meaningful.

Over a very large sample, these Macs (and Macs in general) have been more reliable than many other manufacturers' computer products.

But you do not have a very large sample, you have ONE computer out of the Thousands manufactured over the life of the product. ANYTHING could happen, from having Zero problems over a decade to having the unit arrive D.O.A., and all those outcomes are within the statistical range of "normal".

Apple provides a one-year warranty, during which they agree to fix any defects in materials and workmanship at no dollar cost to you for the repair. There is an option to extend that warranty (at a cost) for up top three years.

I do not think you have a legitimate case that rises to the levels of deliberate evil you seem to feel. But you are welcome to complain through any lawful, legitimate means.

I am sorry that you have been so unlucky with your Apple product. But that is all that has happened to you. There is no quality conspiracy.

I buy 3 mac books and all had the same way logic board faliure. Also returned 4 iMacs with graphics issues. Is that a large enough sample for you statisticaly? I don't feel unlucky. I feel duped!

Grant, you are completely wrong. There are thousands of examples of badly manufactured macbook pro's and other products. I, like others in this discussion group, have had almost every one of my posts deleted by apple. Consumer reports doesn't edit HD video on their mac, make music, or even use the darn thing like most of us do. So to say that the CR reviews trumps all of our real world experiences is a joke and makes your statement ridiculous.

That is NOT what I said.

Consumer Reports employs statisticians, who insist they cannot report ANY results, good or bad, unless the size of the sample is large enough to be "statistically significant". A sample size of one (or even seven) is unlikely to meet those criteria.

Right on brother. You know what the asociate at the apple told me. Not to use my mac book bro for video editing if i don't want it to fail. What. So then why the video about being able to edit video on your mac book pro. Why show us that the mac book pro has as much power packed into it as in the desk top versions. That is false advertisement. He also said that i over use my mac book. Hello. It has quad cores and 8 logical cores. So video editing should be no problem. Also it should not mater much is I watch a movie on Youtube. But it would get scolding hot just watching a video. That is hardley over use. Mind you I did not edit videos ever on my mac book the asociate just assumed I did. I am a still photographer not videographer. The only thing I did is run windows xp or 7 in a virtual machine for school. That is all. And it would get very hot for parallels. Hard disk and video faliure. Video faliure on all 4 I owned. That is %100 faliure for me. Also I don't care how much you use a computer it should not get more then 50 celsius on use. This would get to 90 and 110 on light use like watching a video on you tube. Within the first minute of use you see the temp spike. Poor cooling design. By the way the Apple store is not swarming with customers because of popularity. They are there for technical support. So don't everyone confuse that ever!

If you have a mac book turn off the fall asleep. Just go into power settings and take the slide to never. That auto put the computer to sleep is useless. You can put the computer to sleep manualy when you are done using it. The constant fall asleep weak up and the cool and heat cycle may be a contributing factor to logic boar faliures. It is a fraudulant gimick you don't want to have to live with. This is apples way of seemingly claiming that their lap tops battery life is 8 hours instead of 2 to 3 like everyone else.

i've just bought MBP retina for about 14days old and its logicboard already failed!

As soon as it boot up to OSX, about 20sec-30sec it showed kernel panic warning or it just does not respond anything.

And its currently under repairing for logicboard replacement now.

What am i going to ask is am i'll get the same performance as before with the new logicboard?

I readed some of the post that logicboard replacement will makes your Mac hots, etc

Your computer is still under warranty, and there is an additional warranty on the repair.

The replacement parts are new or remanufactured parts that are as good as new.

If you have ANY trouble with overheating or any other issue, take it to the genius bar and they will attempt to address it. The idea that they would somehow replace parts with sub-standard parts is a conspiracy theory (which folks love to repeat) but it has no merit.

Apple has lots of money. They do not need to cheat you out of a few dollars by installing substandard parts. That is just paranoid nonsense.

Sometimes repairs of computers do not get it right the first time. This is not caused by conspiracies to defraud you. If you have a problem with a repair, ask for the repair to be made right. Apple wants you to be a happy customer.

Your question isn't dumb. I'm glad your problem is getting proper attention.

That said, a prior logic board repair and a 15" display significantly increases the chances of this happening again. You're still under warranty; but when your warranty period is about to end, you might want to consider purchasing AppleCare. (Most of the time, I'd warn against AppleCare; it's not a good bargain for most users. But insurance against a future occurence of the problem may save you lots of money down the line. Logic board repair costs $600, on average.)

I've an early 2011 15 MBP, bought it on August 2011, at BH Photo during a business trip, I'm from Brazil...

In october of 2011, I've upgraded the RAM to 8GB from a selected sticks from Corsair, the MPB worked perfectly...

Them 3 months ago I started to experience unexplainable crashes during low use activities (browsing, email .. etc) and I do not use my MBP for gamming, video production or other heavy process tasks

I decided to make a fresh install of Mavericks (OSX 10.9), maybe was a OS problem.. nothing changed.

Two weeks ago it just crashed from nothing, screen of death: little blue squares mixed with green...

Forced to shutdown, powered it on again, Apple chime and logo, them it starts a spinning wheel for about 2 minutes, than goes to a gray screen and stays there and no HDD activity anymore.

Safe boot has the same behavior.

Booting via option key works, OSX can't boot, neither recovery, or bootcamp (black screen) or booting from Mavericks in a USB Stick, neither recovery from internet, they all starts do load with the speening wheel them it freezes in a gray screen...

Tryed NVRAM clearing many times..

But single user mode works, have checked the disk many many times and it always says is healthy, I was able to pull out all my data through external USD disk..

Running AHT pointed to bad memory sticks, put them in a PC with ubuntu and ran memtest+, they're with retantion problem, replaced with two brand new Corsair MacMemory DDR3 1333MHz, got the same non booting behavior.. but now it pass all AHT (short and long tests)...

I can't think anything them logic board failure, I've talked to apple guys today, mentioned many logic boards failures and they asked me to send to a authorized repair center, since there ir no Apple Store in São Paulo...

I feel very sad after paying 1700 USD on a computer that worked only 2 years and 3 months...
