iChat for iPad

Why isn't there an iChat app for iPad?

BlackBook 2Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5.8), iPad, iPhone 4

Couldn't you introduce your friends and family to the benefits of Skype? It's by far the most widely used voice chat service, free and the voice quality is better than alternatives in my opinion.

As an Apple user I want an Apple app.on my ipad and that's iChat not MS Skype, which I'm not fond of having everything I write stored in their logs, I prefer some semblance of privacy.

If you have an iPad 2, you have FaceTime to video chat.

If you have an iPad 1 or 2 and want an Apple chat program, you will have to wait for iOS 4 with iMessenger.

Here's a problem. Facetime uses video streaming. My son is in the hospital and my daughter's Macbool Pro and my wifes Macbook worked fine with iChat, but video streaming is blocked at the hospital so I couldn't hook up with FaceTime. I'm looking at Skype as an alternative, but it would be great to keep things in the Apple family. As always, all decisions have consequences and I don't think Apple thought this one through.

Hi All,

Face Time and iChat both use ports above the 1024 threshold

Below the port most routers have the ports open.

It allows Web Browsing (port 80 or port 443 for secure sites) and Mail (Ports 25,110, 567, 995, 996 are common ones amongst others) will then work out iof the Box.

Skype will use what are effectively "Fall Back" ports

(If you install it and go to it's Preferences it will tell you the Port for that download)

However if this is not open it will try common mail port or the Web Browsing port effectively circumventing the "Router as firewall" scenario.

Routers and Ports

The IP of the computer can either be Static from the Router and the ports open in the router specifically (Port Forwarding)

Or if the device does it you can use UPnP

As UPnP opens the ports the computer needs when the apps tell the router (simplified idea) and works for multiple computers (different IPs) it does not matter if DHCP is left on and the computer's IP changes occasionally

Mac Firewall

This works by effectively "Certificating" the apps you allow.

Any app allowed will be allowed through the firewall whichever ports it uses.

As iChat is potentially a 4 way Video Chat app when running at max it is probably too Processor intensive for an iOS device.

As has been said, iChat ( version 1) was just an Instant Message app for the AIM service.

iChat 2 added Video and Audio Chat to AIM on PC (Version 5.5 and 5.9) as well as other iChat users.

iChat 3 added Jabber (And therefore GoogleTalk) and 10 Way Audio or 4 way Video Chats

iChat 4 added Effects and Backdrops (depending on Processor), iChat Theatre, Screen Sharing

iChat 5 changed little in function (Minor changes around the edges really)

iChat 6 adds the Ability to Text chat at least to other Yahoo Client apps, Linked Buddy lists (Video and Audio Only chat is between iChat users only like the Jabber/Goolge option is)

All Versions can do Group chats (Chatrooms) and File Sharing.

Face Time can only Video Chat 1-1.

HI,

Since this thread started both Lion and Mountain Lion have been released.

Mountain Lion has Messages (App) which can send messages called iMessages to iOS devices.

It can also send the Instant Message (IMs) that iChat used to for your iChat type Buddies.
