iPhone call recorder?

I thought this would be a fairly obvious feature to have in a such a great phone.
Is there an app to record calls or do you have to jailbreak it?

Thanks

I have a solution which works for me; I hope it is an option for others.

Due to a complication of "Lupus", I now have memory impairment and I need to record important phone calls with details I must act upon. When I purchased my iPhone 4 yesterday, I wrongly assumed there would be a wonderful app which would allow me to record incoming and outgoing calls. Now that we all know this isn't the case, we either must sign up with an outside vendor and pay additional monthly subscription rates to use their service (which also has additional steps I'm unable to remember accurately all the time) or we can choose use the free Google service which means u must have access to your web browser at all times. Neither of these options is workable for me.

I have devised a solution, and maybe it will work for others out there. I have purchased a very small 4 inch digital recorder. I can attach it to the back of my "ottobox" iphone protector a 1 inch square of velcro glued to the back of the recorder and another piece glued to the ottobox. When Im not wearing the iphone this works great. All I need do is connect the two together with a common "y" cable that has a 3.5mm jack on one end (which goes into the iphone headphone jack) and then plug the other end into my digital recorder input jack. These recorders now can be bought at most online photo/video electronic suppliers. I use www.bhphotovideo.com for my photo and video needs but you may have another vendor u prefer. Regardless, they are easily found which will meet your specific needs. Mine uses the very tiny digital flash media to record the file on.

When I make a call or answer an incoming call, all I have to do is press the "record" button and I'm in business. If you desire a hard copy of your conversation, the solution couldn't be simpler thanks to technology. I just insert the flash card into my laptop and I use a speech to text application that enables me to "play" the digital file and it converts it to written text. I then save the file after proof reading it (the programs are so good now that I usually have very little discrepancies. After all, its the same advanced technology that enables me to convert the speech from my video depositions to a written file. Now you know my profession.. I'm a Legal Videographer and my clients are Attorneys. Its very important that I get all my oral instructions and details which are communicated sometimes by an urgent phone call!

I know this may not be as "sexy" as an "app" but for those of us who have cognitive "limitations, its a simple solution and you won't "forget" any lengthy "steps" and it isn't the old bulky setup we might have had to use just a few years ago. It works, its easy, not bulky, and you won't have to depend on anything but a freshly formatted media card and just one push of a button. Works for me. Hope it helps another.
