Try this: save an image to your iPad from safari (so you have the saved photos folder). Then connect your ipad to your pc and wait until your pc gives you the import pictures action. That will assign your ipad a letter which should be D
Having used unix/Linux and os x for several years-I agree, drive letters are quaint.
But shhhh, don't mock the windows sufferers...uhhh, I mean users. 😉

Article did not help since I do see iPad in iTune, just not the drive letter. IPad volume did not mount as far Windows 7 is concerned. Thanks...
I was able to see a name in my network neighborhood showing the content from my iPad but not mapped to a drive. I just open the folder to get to the files.
