Same problem for me starting today, almost immediately after updating the Flash Player.
Problem resolved when I re-started my machine. Hasn't happened again since.
I tried posting a couple of weeks ago but whatever reason my reply did not post.
Anyways, as i justed posted in reply to BeauB, issue resolved for me after I re-started my machine. My gaff for not thinking of doing this sooner! As such, didn't talk to Apple. rents
thanks rents. same for me, duh. thanks again.
Good to hear you sorted yours with a re start ....done that 100 times since it started but nothing its still there get excited when i get updates avaliable thinking this is it, but no luck so far ....over the time its become part of the iTunes i would hate to see it go lol
Hey all...I had the same problem but ours would play movies. The USB port seems to have been the problem. I unplugged a thumbdrive from the port and iTunes came on. I shut it down and plugged the thumbdrive back into the same port and iTunes started up again. Not sure what the problem is with that port, but I think that's it. It doesn't happen unless something is plugged into it.
Hi all
My iTunes only started doing this in the past couple of weeks and it has never done this before. The only thing that has changed is that in the past month, we got ourselves an Apple TV and I have activated iTunes sharing on the apple TV, but not actually tried it out. I am going to check this in the morning and will report back, as this is the only thing that has changed in my set-up, apart of course for recent Apple updates to OS for security etc. But as this has been happening to some of you for quite a while, this wont be it.
Even as I am typing this note, I quit my iTunes and it has just opened up automatically, not started playing as yet, but I know it will at some stage.
I also have experienced it stopping whilst playing a track and then later on starting again on the same track. It's like it has been possessed! LOL
Cheers!
OK, I closed down last night and before rebooting, I changed settings on apple TV to not allow airplay with my iTunes.
Restarted and it hasn't happened at all today!
Could that have been the issue? I wonder...
Mine plays Hells Bells as well. I can't stand the beginging bells.
There's been a number of posts regarding the issue of iTunes launching randomly along with irratic playback (start and stop). I've experinced the same issue and here's what I discovered.
I recently purchased very inexpensive studio powered monitors (Alesis Elevate 3). They sound OK for the price, although when I plugged them into my MacBookPro using the audio out port, while playing an mp3 using iTunes, the song would start and stop randomly. After getting anoyed with that, I killed iTunes. After a few minutes, iTunes would automatically launch and proceed to play every song in my library.
I did that several times, and decided to unplugged the studio monitors, and then the problem stopped. Something is up with these speakers, or they're too close to the computer.

The easiest solution that I found finally worked for me:
Quit iTunes while a song is playing.
That got rid of the iTunes gremlin for me...
SOLUTION! - Suddenly the same thing started happening to me, without cause or reason. Try having the **** scared out of you and in the middle of your workplace when "Who Let the Dogs Out" starts playing at full volume! So anyway, being a former PC user, I thought about the startup menu! lo and behold, there it was, iTunes and "Who let the Dogs Out" in my startup menu. I deleted those 2 things, and no more problem!
Macbook startup Menu:
System Preferences --> Users and Groups --> Login Items --> Then click on the minus sign [-] box to delete anything you don't want to startup with the computer.
I have no idea how the issue began, but I will just be aware that there must be a certain key to set a song to auto play upon computer start.
I am having the same issue for over 2 months now. Finally created the blank playlist as someone suggested in this thread in addition to removing it from my start up window. It still seems to be happening along w/an error message that my iTunes has timed out throughout the day that warning pops up too. Very Frustrating & I am about to the point of just removing iTunes from my iMac. 😟
Recently have the same problem. It will also play on the Apple TV. I can launch iTune and turn off the
music, but it just starts up again.
