Can't connect to wireless print server

Hi

Have just got a new MacBook, am in the process of moving over from Windows but I can't get my Kyocera FS-1010 printer working via its wireless print server (Kyocera SB-70).

The printer works fine via USB cable but says its busy when using ipp.

Have tried to ping the print server but it times out.

Everything works with the Windows PCs on the same Lan.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi PAHU

You're very kind as it was one of the things you asked me to check earlier. Time for a quick recap -

First powering up the XP system first means I get to see shared Windows folders and changing subnet mask makes the print server show up in Finder>Shares.

However, when I ping the print server from Network>Ping i get -
Ping has started…

ping: sendto: No route to host
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down

Request timeout for icmp_seq 8

--- 192.168.11.2 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss

As per an earlier post I can ping the computers from each other and can successfully ping the print server from the XP & Vista PCs.

When I click on kyocera fs-1010 in Finder>Shares my MacBook comes up with 'Connecting' then 'Connection Failed'.

Ignore the smb thing its just something else I tried that didn't do anything different.

Again I'd be delighted if you have any further thoughts.

Gentlemen,
Having the same problems.. I have a D-Link DP-G310 print server and a HP Laserjet 1320. (The router that I use is a D-Link DIR-625). The server is connected and I can print from my WIN-7 and XP PC's. No trouble at all with install, networking etc... Both PC's see the server and both print. Also I have an old laptop with XP and it has no problem.

Now we get to the MAC. If I go to the web browser I can get into the server using 192.168.10 which is the factory default. Make any changes I want. This is true for the PC's too. But on the MAC try and connect to the server and install the printer, I run into the same problems that BAZ does. Nothing that I have tried has worked.

Airport sees my network and my internet connection works fine. Oh I failed to mention that we have and IPad and I have a utility printer app. It will find and print using the print server.

Here is another wrinkle. When I go to add a printer on the MAC, under "Nearby Printers" the printer name asigned in the server appears. You would think that when you click it the printer would show in the list of printers. No such luck! It tells me that it is "setting up the printer" and it is gathering "printer information" It does not load nor does it give any errors.

Unfortunately the D-Link is not supported any longer but following the install instructions for the MAC doesn't help.

Thanks

...you probably would have been better off with starting a new topic - different printer and server, etc...

Confirm that the print server's IP is in the same subnet as the router and computers. Probably is, but check to be sure. A class C local subnet will have the same first 3 parts and only the last one changes, like 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3.
(Subnet mask means the same thing - 255.255.255.0 indicates that only the last part changes)

You should use IP > LPD protocol to set up. So, click + (add), select IP > LPD, enter IP address of the server, enter queue name of the server. Typical queue name looks like PS-xxxx-P1 for your print server. P1 = parallel port 1, P2 = parallel port 2, etc. (I think I heard for yours that just P1 works too, instead of the whole PS-xxxx-P1.)
Then select model/driver. Finish and try it.

Hello Barry,

This latest ping result is not good and it would explain why the connection to its name in Finder > Shared fails. And I believe the name appearing in Finder's Shared section is coming from one of the Windows computers, most likely XP as it would be the master browser if powered on first.

At this stage I think you have a problem with the routing tables. If you had a packet sniffer then you could check this but the learning curve for those apps can be steep if you have limited network experience. So as a test I would be inclined to either set the Lexmark to DHCP or set all the computers to manual addressing. This should change the routing table (MAC address to IP address translation) in the router which may be enough to 'reset' the Mac.

Hi PAHU

Good to hear your thoughts.

I too initially thought the appearance of the print server in Finder was due the XP system Master Browser issue. I'm not so sure now but it's just gut feeling not empirical.

However, it did make me do one thing that I hadn't tried before which was to share the printer from the Vista machine, N.B. it cannot be shared from the XP system. Anyway to cut a long story short I have successfully added a Windows printer via the System Preference>Print & Fax and it works just fine but the only problem is the MacBook is to replace the Vista system. Ho hum!

I will try your suggestions re- DHCP & Manual addressing and you are right to assume the packet sniffer learning curve would be too steep right now. I'll try the suggestions ASAP but I have to go away from home for a couple of days.

Thanks again for all your help, I'll get back to you once i've tried the changes.

Regards
Barry
