Why Do I Have To Render EVERYTHING In FCE

I am brand new to Mac and FCE and i just switched from my PC and Sony Vegas because I've been told a million times that Mac is the way to go for video editing, and well right now I am having major doubts. I opened my HD file that i am going to work on and i pressed play on the canvas and it said "Unrenderd". I've been searching the internet, forums, manual and i cant find an answer that helps me 100%! Can someone please explain to me what i am doing wrong.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

Are there any programs that can change my audio format or do i have to doit through FCE

You can do it in MPEG Streamclip.

FCE won't convert your audio; it will only render anything that doesn't match your Sequence settings. You can use iTunes or QuickTime Player to convert. Do this prior to importing the audio into FCE.

I tried that and it said that there was an error and I also got the same message when i tried to convert a .mp4 video to an .mov so i could use it in FCE4

It could be that you're dealing with DRM issues. What are the sources of the media giving you the error messages?

I was trying to change the format on a .mp4 video file so i could use it in FCE, but when I tried exporting it (I am using MPEG Streamclip) a message came up saying "Error: Cant prepare movie"

If the file opens in Streamclip export to QuickTime. Is that where the error message appears? If so, I can't help you.
