Mac App Store - No Credit Card

Why should I have an account for one application to be able to download a free application through another application when you don't have a credit card?

I never said one was required to set up nor maintain an iTunes account.
But for some reason, it looks as if Apple wants/requires a credit card to verify an account. Don't know if there is another way to to do it but if you are asked to verify your account, send an email to customer support.

Exactly how I do it.
And this is needed to be done to verify the account. Add it, click OK, then remove the CC info.

In the end they are one and the same account. But until Apple irons out the wrinkles in the App Store, I have found that getting your iTunes Store account in proper order and using that ID to open your App Store account works well.

This is beyond absurd.

I have an iTunes Store account with no associated credit card. My Payment Method is "None". I have never introduced an iTunes Gift card. My iTunes Store account is the same as my Apple ID, and the same I use to log in to these forums for example.

I am asked to verify my Payment Method when I try to download a free app from the Mac App Store. When I try to do so the only option they give me is to introduce a credit card since there is no "None" option available.

Essentially I cannot download free apps from the MAc App Store even with my active iTunes Store account that has been working for two years already and works perfectly fine when downloading free content from the iTunes Store.

This is a serious problem. And http://www.apple.com/feedback/ still doesn't show the Mac App Store. It's unbelievable!

I'm glad that you were able to introduce a credit card, but it's obvious that doing so will resolve the problem. What we need is an option to download free apps without having to introduce a credit card or a gift card.

That is hardly a solution. We all know that Apple wants our credit cards, that's the whole source of the problem. And Customer Support will as of now ask for the credit card as well because that is what Apple seems to want. A solution would be to tell everyone, step by step, how to download from the Mac App Store without a CC/Gift Card. Thank you for your help, really, but we still can't download, so this problem has not been solved.

In fact, this problem has no current solution. If you don't have a credit card and you don't have an iTunes Gift Card, you cannot download anything from the Mac App Store.

What did Customer Support tell you about verifying your account when you contacted them in the last two minutes?

Yes I'm having an issue, I thought that was kind of obvious. I tested it 2 minutes ago, I can still download free apps van the iOS app store. I don't have or ever had any credit card linked to my account (iTunes, Apple ID, everything Apple), but am able to purchase paid apps or download free ones for iOS or purchase music from the iTunes store. Unless Apple wants a credit card linked to an account, even if it's just for one minute, to what you call "verify" that account, then I think something is very wrong with Apple's policy.
God, I just want to be able to install the twitter app, I'm not going to spend billions in the app store. Apple is starting to fail me... I've should have stayed with Linux >_>

@Ikus: even a gift card won't help you out here I'm afraid... guess that's a bit of a problem for people who've stacked up quite some money using gift cards...

For those that are having issues downloading free apps without a credit card, have you tried calling Apple Support? I have no CC tied to my iTunes account and it works fine for me. But apparantly some people it doesn't work for. Part of the problem stems from the fact that when you go to your payment info in the MAS there is no selection for NONE as there is in the iTunes Account info.

I would recommend that you try to modify your billing info in iTunes first then login to the MAS. This must be a bug in the store as it should be, as far as I can tell, the same as the iTunes store. Why didn't they just make this part of iTunes Store like they do for the iOS app store? Why a separate application when they could have easily integrated it with iTunes? Apple has made some poor decisions in the case of the MAS. That's just my opinion so don't shoot me or anything. 😉
