iPhone 4 Power Button Stuck

Out of the blue today the power/lock button on my iPhone 4 became completely unresponsive. It doesn't seem to be jammed and it actually seems to be loose and a bit wiggly. Now I can't restart my phone and I can't lock it. I was wondering if this was a common problem with other iPhone 4 units and what would be the best way to go about getting it fixed. I got this phone from a friend about a month ago who had only used it for about two months before switching to a different phone. Prior to receiving this phone I had been using an iPhone 3G for two years with no problems whatsoever. This iPhone 4 has not been dropped or exposed to water or humidity of any kind. Thanks in advance!

Another 4S here that's been taken care of very well since day one, two months after the one year warranty and the same power button issue. I'm going to try the Genius Bar, and if its the cold shoulder like most other people get, it's time for the competition to get my business, and time for the 1.5 week old iPad to be returned. There's a lot of great products out there made by the competition, I can live without having to pour more money into the exact same now old and out dated product every year, and I can certainly live without a company that doesn't stand behind its expensive products a year later...Apple. The company was almost wiped off the planet back in the day when Steve "Left", now about a year after he's gone, forever unfortunately, the downward spiral has already begun with the changes in policy, the 3rd Gen. iPad being replaced in a very short time frame, this lack of support for a known issue (very serious issue).

These are not new products, just slight "improvements" model to model, and the competition does it just as well.

It's not going to last forever there policy changers and decision makers, you should have taken the lessons learnt last time to heart, but you obviously haven't, and remember, it wasn't the stock holders and it wasn't you that got this company where it is, we the customers did right along side the one person who could make Apple this success story, now that he's gone along with his policies, we're going to be the ones to take it right back down.

Smarten up before its too late Apple. AGAIN

aaaaaaand my iPhone 4's power button has stuck, 18 months in to a 2 year contract. It's definitely out of warranty but I'm going to see the "genius" bar and see what they say. I'm guessing a £120 replacement. The only damage to the phone is the scuffing caused by having a bumper on (another gripe I have with an apple product).

If this many people are having this problem why is there no official reply from apple? Because the iPhone 4 is "that" old?! My Nokia 6630 still works perfectly, as does my Sony-Ericson T10 and they are MUCH older!

I was having the same issue with my IPhone 4 that all of you are complaining about--stuck center button. I tried cleaning, etc. but nothing helped. Then I saw an article about calibrating the home button--I was about to go buy a new phone, but tried this and amazingly it worked. This may be somewhere else on this thread, but I haven't seen it so I figured I'd post. Hope it helps some of you, my phone is now fine! (Well, I lost my excuse for an upgrade, anyway!)

1. Open one of the built-in applications. I used weather, but supposedly calendar stock quotes also works.

2. With one of these apps open, hold down the top power button until the "slide to power off" comes on.

3. As soon as you see "slide to power off" displayed, release top power button and then press and hold down the home button. The "slide to power off" arrow should go away after a few seconds and you'll be returned to the home screen. Release the home button and it should be recalibrated.

Please post if this works, good luck!

I'll shed some updates on my situation:

1. I went to another apple store (UTC La Jolla), where I spoke with an 'apple genius' who again tried to point me to the Assistive Touch feature, and I had informed him that I already had it set up on triple-click to try and conserve real estate on my screen. I then asked to speak with a manager. I told her my situation and she offered to meet me half way for the replacedment ($100). I told her that I would think about it.

I went back a couple of days later to see if I would have to give them my current (broken) phone. They will in fact take it, so I decided to not purchase the new one. The only way that I would buy a new one is if I could try and sell my current phone to recoupe so of my money.

I then figured I would take a stab at fixing the button. I have been doing some research and it seems that stuffing a little piece of foil under the button acts as a spacer. I went ahead and tried this. The phone actually worked perfect for about a day, and then became harder and harder to push, and eventually stopped working. NOW, I'm sure that I could have done a better job with this, but anyone who has actually attempted it will agree that the space that you have to work with is extemely tight, and it is not an easy process. I took the foil out, and tried to use something that was a little harder - I used foil from an anti-static bag. I couldn't get the button to work, so tried the regular aluminum foil again, only to not be able to get it to work.

I am back to square one with a broken lock button, and 6 months until my upgrade. I've probably damaged some connections with the button at this point, and am just going to suck it up. This has been a hard pill to swallow, as I have ONLY Apple products, and really like the iphone when it is working...

Oh! And by the way, with the exception of the manager who I worked with at UTC, the employees for some reason have a pompus attitude and feel like they own the world. I was extremely unimpressed with their customer service. I really don't know what has happened to Apple, I've been into that store over 20 times either purchasing products, or dealing with with product issues, and everyone has always been extremely cordial. I hope they find another Steve soon...
