4.2.1's lag issue on iPhone 4

Hi there,
I just update to iOS 4.2.1 few days ago, well, the new features were just work fine, but I found a lag problem with my iPhone4, yes, it was LAG!
here are some cases:
1. lag when scrolling(such as in address book or other pages with long contents)
2. lag when opening a folder or closing a folder
3. pressing HOME, the zoom out animation sometimes lag
4. pressing APPs, the zoom in animation maybe lag
5. double pressing HOME, the animation maybe lag,,,,

the issue seems just like a computer in high CPU usage or with low memory, and sometimes it made me a little bit freak out....

after I cleared all the histories and cookies and caches and closed all background APPs, the issue remained,,,

there was no problem when my iPhone 4 was iOS 4.1 and previous versions.
and my iOS 4.2.1 works fine inside the APPs,,,

I wonder if any other users got such lag issue, or it was just something wrong with my iPhone,,,,

please help me, thanks!

Lags and sluggishness has been discussed repeatedly with the iPhone 3G updating to iOS 4. It has NOT been a significant problem for the iPhone 4, nor specifically related to 4.2.1 as claimed here. If it were as widespread as claimed, there would be hundreds if not thousands posting, with the thread being 50+ pages.

FYI, I downloaded idygest (a good app - thanks) but I get no lag or "shudder" problems scrolling down a story. The only problem is a momentary flicker of the thumbnail images next to the headline when going back from the story to "Top 10" headlines. There's nothing to indicate this is an iOS problem vs an app bug or incompatibility. Can you document that this does NOT occur in earlier versions of iOS 4?

sorry i have been to ,my apple store and all 16 iphones did this.

you arent seeing it . very lightly flick the bottom story up and follow it. it will go up a few cm then down a mm then up a cm and down a mm very slightly making it go back and forth while still scrolling up .

the genuis bar people have comfirmed that this is happening when i went to the apple store to try this on more than just my dads and sisters iphone 4 .

this dosnt happen on the 3g or 3gs .

Sorry, but I really can't reproduce what you're saying. If I scroll up from the bottom of a story (or the last story of the top 10), i get no such effect. However if I try to scroll down past the bottom, there is a bounce - which has always been there, in all iPhone models/iOS versions. Note that I'm currently using 4.3 beta2 - possibly making a difference, but I never had any problem with any app in earlier version.

When you say this doesn't happen in the 3G or 3GS, what iOS version? This also could be a hardware issue in the iP4 graphics chips in some, but not all phones.

I have the iPhone 4 and experienced the problem with the antenna when I first bought it but once I got a case it has been fine.

Now I updated to 4.2.1 and I have severe lag issues where it lags so bad it freezes for sometimes 20+ seconds and I have to get out of the program and bring up the standby menu and end it.

I find the using the Maps app is the worst. I will type one letter for search and the key freezes on whatever I try to type. So yes this is a serious issue and yes it is becoming more prevalent. There are videos on YouTube of it happening to them titled iPhone 4.2.1 lag. So don't tell us we are making it up!

My wife has the iPhone 3GS and she has been having the same lag/ freezing issues once she updated as well.

Apple tried to come out and say the antenna problem didn't affect many people either. Bull! It affected everyone who had one, lol. That's why we all got free cases. This is a problem and I am waiting for the next update so my phone will stop these issues.

I didn't have these problems until this update and niether did my wife.

If you're having severe lags/freezes as you claim, there's something seriously wrong with your phone that needs restoring as new. If you bother to read the rest of this thread, it's about a very different issue. If 30+ million users of 4.2.1 were having these freezes, there would be so many posting about it, you would have trouble logging on to the forum.

In fact, the "antenna issue" affected only a small fraction. The free bumpers had to do with all the media hype. I didn't bother with a case until the Otterbox came out and only for drop protection.

so u see this bounce i talk of then??

I only see the bounce when trying to scroll too far - below or above the bottom or top - which is normal. I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing.
i remember reading the iphone 4 is faster in 3d proccesing but a bit slower for 2d compared to the 3gs.

That's correct. It's also possible that the graphics chip (integrated) varies somewhat in different batches of phones, accounting for some differences in performance

Thank you for contributing useful information mruzz. After hearing your issues, it sounds like it has to do with the Internet connection being active in the background of programs like you said error connecting to game server.

My issues seem to be when maps is tryig to use the connection when I am typing to search and also when I am in safari trying to type in the search bar.

I hope they get a new update soon and it solves these issues.

Just for the record, there are more than "only 6 user IDs" posting about the laggy/jerky animations:

One more thing: I went to an Apple Store this weekend and guess what... every single iPhone, iPod touch and iPad there had the jerky animations. What a surprise. They were all on iOS 4.2.1.
That fits my coworkers claim, that this is common issue and a known bug.

I heard it from a co-worker who develops iPhone and iPad Apps. He has the beta on one of his phones.

@modular747: The lag occurs on every iPhone 4 running 4.2.1. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there. Resetting or restoring in whatever way doesn't help.

And just how do you know that it occurs on every single iphone 4? Mine doesn't lag either so not sure what you are talking about.
