4.2.1's lag issue on iPhone 4

Hi there,
I just update to iOS 4.2.1 few days ago, well, the new features were just work fine, but I found a lag problem with my iPhone4, yes, it was LAG!
here are some cases:
1. lag when scrolling(such as in address book or other pages with long contents)
2. lag when opening a folder or closing a folder
3. pressing HOME, the zoom out animation sometimes lag
4. pressing APPs, the zoom in animation maybe lag
5. double pressing HOME, the animation maybe lag,,,,

the issue seems just like a computer in high CPU usage or with low memory, and sometimes it made me a little bit freak out....

after I cleared all the histories and cookies and caches and closed all background APPs, the issue remained,,,

there was no problem when my iPhone 4 was iOS 4.1 and previous versions.
and my iOS 4.2.1 works fine inside the APPs,,,

I wonder if any other users got such lag issue, or it was just something wrong with my iPhone,,,,

please help me, thanks!

please people have been talking about the lag on the new ios since it came out..

some updates have made it better for some. some have made it worst

but there is indeed lag and stuttering on the ios.

download the app idygest and flick the screen slightly so it scrolls across the screen..

IT WILL studder and not do it smoothly.

there are tons of differnt times u will see this and can recreate this un smooth ugly transitions..

Have you every thought it was the app that was buggy and not the OS?

Oh my God, what's wrong with you guys? Is there any reason why you need to be so disrespectful? Believe it or not, those colleagues that I am talking about exist, so there's no need to use any stupid quotation marks here. I am a software engineer myself and the company that I work for is Capgemini - a company with over 90000 employees worldwide. The developer that I've been talking to, has worked on hundreds of Apps, some of them for major clients. He told me that this is a known issue and guess what... I believe him although he did not tell me any incident number right away. I thought it was a good idea to share this information with other people in this forum who have noticed the "problem" as well. But I guess I was wrong about that.

@KC7GNM: So far every iOS device running 4.2 that I have seen, has the issue. Like I said before, I just went to an Apple Store this weekend and every single device there had jerky animations. So I think, that...

a) most people don't notice it, because they don't have "an eye" for it.
b) maybe (but unlikely) it's affecting only European devices since I have not yet had an American device in my hands.

Edit: modular747 deleted the rude message that I originally responded to (or it was deleted). So the 'oh my God' beginning of my post may look a little out of context now.

Actually....I never realized the update caused my problem. I had also been wondering why my iPhone has been lagging very badly. I had the exact same thing happen, it seems like it's a slow computer running. I was concerned as well because I thought my phone was bogged down, but I had never experienced before. It's good to see others having the same problem, lets me know it's not just me.

@modular....there really are many posts online about this lag. It's great that you're not having problems, but apparently many people on the net are.

Actually, not "the exact same thing." This thread is about a very specific graphic/animation "lag" or stuttering, not a general sluggishness or slowness.

Slowdown after updating has been reported after EVERY iOS UPDATE since the original iPhone was released, and is usually fixed by the basic troubleshooting steps described in the User Guide - Restart, Reset, Restore with backup, Restore as new.

1. Since your post is NOT about the same problem, and you haven't done the basic troubleshooting, you're confusing issues.
2. What do you mean by "many" relative to the >20 million who updated?

Just for the record, there are more than "only 6 user IDs" posting about the laggy/jerky animations:

Hmm, 5 threads all <1 page, some with the same participants, at least 1 of whom reported the problem fixed by restoring. OK, I'll upgrade that to 12 (and not all clearly talking about the same thing, and some saying the problem existed before 4.2.1)

I think it's quite unfair to give OP this kind of treatment when he's in fact probably describing his findings as good as he can.

Me and my girlfriend were experiencing cases of sluggishness and short freezes, so I went here to see if there were others with issues. I identify this as a positive find, and yes, all the hoops have been jumped through. It is still jerky and freezes for a short moment sometimes when for example scrolling down the recent calls list. Scrolling down the contact list does not jerk, oddly enough.

And last of all, out of all the million devices sold not everyone would even notice this problem. Most people tend to close their eyes and accept smaller issues like this, partly because it is an expensive device and because it is marketed by Apple. Like the prophet of a popular religion, you don't want your prophet to look bad in other eyes.

Out of those who DO identify the issue, only a small fraction of those would trouble themselves with posting here. So take a small fraction multiplied by a small fraction multiplied by even 20 million, it would still boil down to a pretty small number.

No one is denying that the OP is having a real problem. My issue is his unsupported claims that it is due to a "bug in 4.2.1" and that the problem exists in "every iPhone 4", furthermore stating that the vast, vast majority both are incapable of perceiving and understanding the problem. Fatuous arrogance.

I'm not going to get in a semantic and statistical argument about the nature of "many" and "most" in this context. The fact remains, you can count the number reporting this with your fingers and toes. Compare this with the 100+ pages of reports about the slowdown in the iPhone 3G when updating to iOS 4.

This IS the EXACT same problem. I don't mean just a slow computer...the exact same as the original poster described...I'm having. When I scroll through screens, it stutters or "lags" or when I hit the home button.

basically everything he described.

you're pretty much not wanting to accept the fact that a lot of people are having this problem. It really is great you're not having the problems, but you shouldn't criticize people or call them a "troll" for pointint out the FACT that many people...(yes many, just search the net for 4.2.1 lag issue) are having this problem. you seem to be very closed minded.

oh yeah...I have done the troubleshooting steps and still have the lag issue. I never said before whether I had or not, you just assumed I had not.

Yes, Brad, it's whatever you want it to be....
you shouldn't criticize people or call them a "troll" for pointint out the FACT that many people...(yes many, just search the net for 4.2.1 lag issue) are having this problem.

The only people said are trolls are those who tried to tell me that I also had the problem, but I'm incapable of seeing or understanding it. Or, they told me to leave the thread if I don't agree. I'll add to that people who say one thing one day, then deny it the next...

this is what I really cannot comprehend. You believe that I am bsing? My phone has had the same exact problems as described on this thread, which made me realize I wasn't alone with the lag issue. Then I searched the internet and found many other websites with people reporting the same problem. Just because you're not having a problem with your phone doesn't mean all these people reporting this issue on the many websites out there are wrong. you're just ignorant for assuming that just because you don't have a problem, that there isn't one at all.
