The router uses 64-bit (=40-bit) encryption. The Airport Express automatic setup assumes 128-bit and will generate a garbage password that won't work. You need to click "Manual Setup", then choose Wireless, and then the Wireless Security pulldown will include the 40-bit choice.

Bob you are a lifesaver.
After an hour of plugging, unplugging, restarting, and CURSING I was up and running within 2 minutes by following your directions and selecting WEP 40 Bit.
Thanks
Will the WEP-64 bit solution work with a 12 character key?
Doubtful, but you wont' know until you try. Ideally, you would want to have a 5 character password with WEP 64 bit, which is also known as WEP 40 bit.
Let me add my thanks also. I spent hours on this and after a couple false detours this worked. I also had the problem with the one WEP password option and wanted a 13 digit password. I think you have to update the firmware on the AExpress, which, alas, you can only do when connected. Then, I saw the option right off. In any event, thanks. Now I will just have to see if I can get AirPlay working tomorrow, untethered from the Ethernet cable.
But this was very helpful!
After much work and various attempts, I was able to get my AEX connected. I logged in to my Verizon wireless router site and using advanced security changing to WPA. Then I used my existing password for the Pre-Shared Key so that my wife's laptop would still access OK. It will tell you to wait while it makes changes, but it will end your internet session. Wait a few minutes and reconnect your computer to your local network and use your password. Then I did a reset of the AEX, opened Airport Utiitlies and it scanned. It took some time for it to find the device and then I loaded everything, name, join network, password and I finally got the green light. Now I can stream Itunes to my stereo. PS , there is a Verizon tutorial for how to change wireless settings. Don't remember where it is. I always do screen shots of things I change (before) just in case I may have to restore. Good luck!
I followed all of your good advice (after several hours of frustration following other advice), and everything seems to click--I've set up the AirPort Express---although the AirPort Utility still seems to pick it up on my FiOs network, it shows up on iTunes--and even asks me for the AirPort Express password. However, when I select the AirPort Express as a remote speaker, I get the error message: "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “[name of AirPort Express]”. The network connection failed."
Any suggestions on what's happening--and, more importantly, how to fix it?
what are you trying to do, play itunes throught a stero
Exactly. I'm trying to use AirPlay to send music from iTunes on my iMac to an AirPort Express, which is then connected to my stereo.
when you said that you selected remote speakers, I got lost. if your AEX appears as a selection on the bottom of Itunes, you just select it and it streams. I assume you have AEX connected to your stereo, aux input.
Sorry, the remote speakers reference was from a couple of years ago (an older OSX). When I select the AEX at the bottom of iTunes, the iTunes window states "Connecting to AirPlay devices", and then the error message appears in a new window.
Temporarily, plug in a pair of headphones to the AirPort Express and restart things. If things work.....you likely have a problem in your audio connecting cable and/or the speaker connections.
Ok. You might try this, more involved. Even thought I used WPA, since then I had some other problems with FIOS and talked to an Apple person, I changed my FIOS settings back to WEP and also to 128 bit. I had to then create a password of 13 characters.
After that I did another hard reset of AEX and then started over using the utility and the new password and finally got a green light. It now streams to my stereo.
The headphones were a good idea! Unfortunately, I got the same error message, and no music through the headphones.
I used the 40 bit WEP approach (with the 10 digit password) and got a green light on the AEX. In contrast to my understanding from other posts, though, the AEX still shows up when I startup AirPort Utility.
Any other thoughts?
If you are getting a green light on AEX, I don't know what else to try, sorry
