Thanks BZ. I'm not sure it's a distance issue as I cannot get the AE to pair with the Verizon router.

I don't believe you can use an Airport Express to extend a wifi network with a non-Apple device. To extend the your wifi network with the AX you will also need the Airport Extreme. You can however join the the Airport Express to your Verizon Fios router.
Help please. I have a Verizon FIOS router and just bought an airport express. I have a windows laptop. My only goal is to stream Spotify (and music stored in itunes) through the AE's optical out to my audio system. After 4 hours I have been able to get it to work but only by disabling security on my network. that cannot be good. I read on page 2 or 3 of this thread that i should get an option to select WEP but that never happened. I only got 4 different WPA options:
WPA/WPA2 Personal
WPA2 Personal
WPA/WPA Enterprise
WPA Enterprise
I am connected from a LAN out on the verizon router to the WAN in on the AE.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Go to Wireless Settings
Number 4 select WEP
Number 5 Select 128/104 bit then ASCII
Key Code must be exact 13 digit/alpha
Make sure you screen copy everything. Should be good after that
The key code become your wireless network password
Suggest: Make it logical like a phrase, maybe truncated
I appreciate the response but that appears to be the problem.
1. I go to wireless settings,
2. I select "join a wireless network"
3. I selcect the name of my network
4. for "wireless security" I get a drop down menu with the 4 options I describe above:
WPA/WPA2 Personal
WPA2 Personal
WPA/WPA Enterprise
WPA Enterprise
Ok, I figured out how to change my router to WPA2 security. I've reset the AE and will give it another shot from the beginning later.
I'm connected wirelessly! But not all great news...I am getting dropouts every few minutes or so. 😟. There is no specific pattern to the dropouts. Anyone have any words of wisdom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All, I am posting here as the topic title is the closest thing to what I want to do. I am having multiple problems under the same category and when I discovered this thread I found that the original advice that seemed to help so many does not work for me. I am posting here in the hope that someone much more savvy than me can offer some help and the hope that this can stay up to date with the latest Mac OS etc.
I cannot get an airport express to join my verizon network and when I follow the directions pasted below from much earlier in this thread, I am given no option to enter the WPA settings of my Verizon router. The Airport utility has the express attempt to join the Verizon network, but an "unexpected error" occurs and I'm stuck. The only time a password setting window shows up in the set up process is when the Airport Utility asks to give the express a name and password. I am never given the choice to enter my Verizon router security info and I can find no drop down menus to do so.
I am attempting to do this on a Macbook Air running El Capitan. I should also note that I start the whole process by going to the wireless connection of the Macbook Air and then choosing the airport express. Once I hit the "unexpected error" problem, the wireless connection of the Macbook Air is also hosed and it will no longer join the Verizon network and defaults to a self assigned IP. The only way to get the Macbook air back on the Verizon network is to delete the current wireless setting on the Macbook Air in the system prefs. and then use the helper utility to re-join the Verizon network and create a new wireless setup.

Re: Airport Express and Verizon FIOS router in response to skowhegan1
Start over with the configuration of the AirPort Express again with a "hard reset". Hold in the reset button on the Express until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly, keep holding another 4-5 seconds and then release
Open AirPort Utility and configure the Express to "join" your wireless network. When you get to the wireless settings, choose WEP 40 Bit on the Express and enter your 10 character password and confirm
When you click Update, close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored sucessfully. It does no good to keep AirPort Utility open because the Express will "disappear".
Wait 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart and with some luck, you'll see a green light. You should be all set.
The instructions that you reference are well over 4 years old, and have little to no relevance to any operating system that has been introduced in the last 3+ years.
