Airport Express and Verizon FIOS router

I am trying to add an Airport Express to my wireless network (Verizon FIOS MI424WR)and have tried using the manual setup. Airport Utility is able to see the AExp but once I finish with a manual setup, upon restarting the AExp it says it cannot find it. Is the problem with the WEP vs. WPA2?

I am having the same problem but this solution did not work for me. The difference in my situation is that I using Windows 7 and a 2-Wire roiuter with U-verse. The router uses WPA/WPA2 security. Every time I configure the base station and click on "update" it will restart, then disappears from Airport Utility. I have been sweating over this off and on for weeks!

If the 2-Wire uses WPA/WPA2 Personal security, then you would choose the same setting on the AirPort Express.

Every time I configure the base station and click on "update" it will restart, then disappears from Airport Utility.

This is normal. Close AirPort Utility immediately as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored.

Wait 40-45 seconds for the AirPort Express to restart. If you see a green light, things are OK.

Log back on to your 2-Wire network. Now if you open AirPort Utility, you will see the AirPort Express

I am trying to use my AirPort Express to extend my network to my bedroom where my Action Tec Router doesn't reach. My desire is to be able to take my MacBook Pro and/or my IPads into my bedroom and stream video from Netflix and other internet based sources onto them.

I have used your technique and am able to get the AirPort Express to pair with the Router (I think) and I get the solid green light.

When I take my MacBook Pro into the bedroom I'm getting a reasonable signal and I'm able to download video now which I wasn't able to do without the AirPort Express. But when I use my iPad I still get no signal in the bedroom. It appears to me that the iPad is effectively not recognizing or able to utilize the AirPort Express.

Any thoughts?

Sorry, but if you are trying to do this using wireless only, the Actiontec and Apple products are not compatible for this purpose.

The Express can "join" the Actiontec wireless network so that you can stream AirTunes or connect a remote printer, but it does not provide any additional wireless coverage in that setting.

To provide more wireless coverage, the Express must be configured to "Extend a wireless network" but it will only do this in conjunction with another Apple wireless router.

Hi Bob, thanks for the quick response! I don't get a message about settings being stored. As soon as I click on "update" a box appears that says the connection will be temporarily unavailable while Airport restarts and asks if I want to proceed. I choose yes and the AE restarts. As soon as it has finished the restart another box pops up that says something like "searching for devices". After a minute or so I get a message that says it was unable to detect any devices. The light on the AE never turns green, it is always blinking amber. Airport Utility will not detect the base station again until I do a factory reset. I have been trying to use the WPA/WPA2 security but it doesn't work. I believe I have tried all the different kinds of security but no luck. Maybe I have to allow the AE through the firewall on the router? Or maybe the AE has just gone bad?

I'm looking for more clarification or confirmation that someone has had success connecting an AirPort Express 1084 to an Actiontec M1424 using WPA. I've spent hours on this with no success and this appears to be the best thread.

I have the same problem as others: After doing a factory reset on the the AE, I'm able to find it and connect using Airport Utility 5.5.3 on a MacBook Pro. Then, after I set it up the AE manually for WPA, I save those settings and am no longer able to establish a connection and the AE blinks amber endlessly. After saving the settings to the AE I have shut down Airport Utility as discussed on this thread, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

I want the AE to join the existing wireless network to stream ITunes. When I set up my network originally, I used WPA as that was the only security that seemed to work for my combination of devices: MacBook Pro, Win 7 PC, Brother 2170W printer, Wii, etc. While tempted based on the success of others on this thread, I'd really rather avoid switching to WEP as that would mean resetting all the devices. I was also told by someone at the Genius bar that Macs don't like WEP.

Help please!

Its been so long since I got involved in this but one thing occurs to me. Do a hard reset of AEX without it being connected to anything else but power. Then connect it to your FIOS router hard wire ethernet cable. It should automatically interact and then use the Airport Utility and use your network password. You might get a green light after this but if not then go the WPA route 13 password. I hope that after that you should be able to proceed to other steps.

Thanks for the idea. I follow what you are suggesting except for the "13 password". I have always gotten the green light when I am hard wire connected to the router after a factor reset, but after saving the new wireless settings and WPA password, the AE goes to endless flashing amber. My WPA password has 20+ characters (from memory) and was assigned by the Actiontec software. What do you mean by 13 password?
