.MOV files won't play anymore

since we had to get a new hard drive, I backed up everything using time machine and I brought all my photos and movies back but now some of my videos/movies (taken on my digital camera) won't play. They are still .MOV files but the time has been changed to 0.00 and consequently they look like still photographs. It has only happened to some of them as well despite being taken on the same camera. I have all the videos but they don't play anymore. Anyone have any idea what could have happened? and what I could do about it, if anything?

My issue is a bit different but I found a solution and maybe my solution might help you. I too had put in a new hard drive into my imac and then my old .mov movies would not play. I would not get a static picture like you did from the movie like a .jpeg but instead would just get a QuickTime icon. Nothing would play. I get a black screen. The bar moves across as if playing but no sound and no movie. I almost gave up and deleted all these old movies of our daugther! But then I transferred them to our old laptop. The laptop has Snow Lepoard and the iMac has Lion. They work fine on the laptop. So I'm now putting them together into iMovie on the laptop to create a new file and will export. Hopefully they will the play on the iMac. I hope that helps you!

From my daughter's birth to now (1 year old), all my videos are now 0.00 and I can't figure out why. I guess we are in the same boat. I moved my .mov files from a non-Lion computer and I think that maybe where the issue is - something to do with Lion. Let me know if you have gotten anywhere with this.

I've kind of given up now, the files are still there and I won't delete them but I just don't have any idea as to why they have changed to 0.00 from the original timings on them and also not all of them have changed, some of them are ok. It's quite confusing. When we replaced the hard drive they (in the apple store) installed Snow Leopard back on as that was what we had and I only changed to Lion quite a bit later so that can't have anything to do with my problem. I think the problem lies with the fact that I backed up the whole computer onto a hard drive and somewhere in the copying of the files, they were changed. No one seems to have any clue as to why or how or even how to fix it so it looks like we're stuck. Let me know if you manage to find out anything but I have no idea where to turn next...

Any solutions? The last I opened iPhoto and double-clicked on a .mov file and it played without fault was about two weeks ago. I have been doing this for several years using several different cameras, inlcuding an iPhone. My .avi files still play in iPhoto, but not the .mov. The only changes I have made to my system (Mac OS 10.5.8; Quicktime 7.7) since my last successful viewing is that I have upgraded to iOS 5 and to an iPhone 4S. The .mov files played from my iPhone 4 played fine.

Maybe my situation can spread some insight. Quicktime should play a .mov file; it is Mac native for goodness sake!

Help!

I have recently discovered that my movies in iPhoto, have mostly turned to 0.00. Mountain Lion, quicktime, etc..

Moved to desktop, tried VLC, still won't play, found original in finder, still 0.00. It seems that the original has been forever changed, and it's not recoverable....unless someone out there has found a solution?????

a freak glitch, i guess, suçk$ big time.

Yes, This is BAD. I have read all this and still can not recover my .mov files. Most of these files were taken from my iPad and as I remember were downloaded to iphoto as movies. I wanted to move them out of iPhoto and I think that is when I lost them or they became corrupted. Yes, they show 0.00 for time and nothing else. Any new ideas let me know as well. I think they are lost forever. Please help us anyone.

This happened to me too. I exported the files from iPhoto using the JPEG option . . . the pictures all were fine but the video were turned into .MOV files that are essentially not the originals anymore, no content of video no nothing! . . . sad really because i cannot recover some of my most beloved videos from trips out of the country . . . to prevent this however we can export the files from iPhoto using the ORIGINAL option NOT JPEG or any other from the list, then the videos are .MOV but they have the full videos 🙂 hope this saves someone else from making this mistake!

I recently experienced this (on iPhone 4s running 6.0.1 and Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion) and found that, assuming the videos are playing correctly on the phone, they will also play on the computer if you email them directly from phone (using the share button in the camera app) instead of downloading them from the device via usb sync.

Dear Apple

This is a joke right. A very bad joke. Apple is a reputable company and start fading fast?. Our family always use Apple products, from laptop to iphone (every models). We also upgraded paid software every time Apple made releases. I experienced the same problem, Quicktime can't play .mov file with size 0, as these folks in this discussion. I felt happy when found this thread because I thought my problem can be fixed. But after reading all discussions I see that there is no corrected answers provide and it seems like all responses are from the users (many thanks to users) not from Apple. Where is the help from Apple authorities - Tier 2-3 Tech support or Developer? People lost their 10-20 year old video files ON A MAC is a very BAD incident. In my case I video my kids since their were young (10 years ago) some on digital camera, some on iphones and the video files were PLAYING fine on QuickTime on my MacAir. Until now the file size got shunk to smaller and always show with ZERO size on Quicktime once clicked on the file. I have MacAir 2010 model, Mountain Lion, iPhoto 11, Quicktime 10.2. This is an official Apple support site and I hope Apple do monitor it. Please response in here. I wish Steve Jobs is still here with us /Son Ha

Hi everyone, I am sorry to hear that you've been having some problems…

Unfortunately if a file is no longer exhibiting full file size it more than likely means it's become corrupted, and keeping a backup or 2 is always good, either burnt to cd/dvd or on an external that is constantly cleaned and refreshed…

There is data recovery software you can purchase that may be able to find the old files but none of the naming conventions given will be there in the recovered files… it may well be worth a go though…

http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php

Handbrake is another little piece of golden goodness that will help with video file recovery… other than vlc and mpeg streamclip… but the file has to be at full size…

<This is a Direct Download Link>

http://sourceforge.net/projects/handbrake/files/0.9.8/HandBrake-0.9.8-MacOSX.6_G UI_x86_64.dmg/download

I hope this helps and all the best with your recoveries and reinstatements…

All the best.
