.MOV files won't play anymore

since we had to get a new hard drive, I backed up everything using time machine and I brought all my photos and movies back but now some of my videos/movies (taken on my digital camera) won't play. They are still .MOV files but the time has been changed to 0.00 and consequently they look like still photographs. It has only happened to some of them as well despite being taken on the same camera. I have all the videos but they don't play anymore. Anyone have any idea what could have happened? and what I could do about it, if anything?

Intel dual core 17" iMac 5,1, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone 2, working better than the day I got it! iPad

Work Around for what is a actually pretty serious bug.

My iPhone 4 vide0s could not be openned after exporting them from Aperture. Get Info showed 43K.

The file does play in Apple Grapher, however, and when saved with a new name, it plays in QuickTime without problems. Also, the file in Get Info has been restored to the actual size.

I do hope Apple puts a little more focus this kind of detail. It is really a lapse in quality.

I followed this fix and it got my .mov playing from within iPhoto '08

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3003

Moved from 10.6.? to 10.8 and they stopped working from iPhoto (though I could open them from the Finder).

After installing the older Quicktime player (7), it now works to double click in iPhoto '08 (v7.1.5)

Hope this saves some time for people.

I've had what looks to be the same problem but found what was wrong and it might fit some of your situations. I've stored photos and videos in iPhoto and extracted them all to a NAS as I'd outgrown the storage on my laptop. When I initially exported everything with Kind set to JPEG, videos have the same small size, .MOV extension and play only black. When I change this to Original it exports properly - file sizes are the correct, still .MOV but they play.

Thanks for your help, Apple.... NOT!!

I also had this issue with videos taken with an iPod touch. They were still saved on my iPod touch, thankfully, but after being transferred to my Mac they wouldn't play in Quicktime, just had the 0:00 like everyone is saying. I read something about using Image Capture program to import the video files again. After I did the following steps, the videos would play on my Mac in Quicktime again. I suppose this only works if you have the original videos still saved on the device you used to record them..

1. Plug your device (ex: iPod or iPhone) into your computer using a USB connector

2. If iTunes pops up, close it. Instead open Image Capture in your applications folder

3. Your device should be listed under "Devices" on the left if it is connected correctly. It will also list all the photo and video files on the device.

4. Go through the list of photo/videos and select all the .MOV files (which is on the end of the file names) and on the bottom where it says "Import to" choose "Movies" from the dropdown (you may need to select 'other' first). This will ensure your imported movie files will be saved in your Movies folder on your Mac.

5. Select "Import" and your files will begin saving to the Movies folder.

6. Go to your Movies folder and open one of the video files in Quicktime. It should work correctly now

I hope this helps someone! This really shouldn't even be an issue since I took these videos with an Apple device.... 😠

On Win7/8 got sound back by downgrading QT to 7.7.3

Possibly related... On windows7/8 boxes, old quicktime videos on very old websites would play without any sound at all after upgrading quicktime beyond version 7.7.3 ((1680.64) released 2012-Nov-8. Uninstalled newer Quicktime and found a Quicktime773.exe installer at old apps, and all videos on wesite now play correctly with sound. Found 7.7.3 for win at http://www.oldapps.com/quicktime_player.php?old_quicktime=8453?download

Be interesting to know if folk's .MOV files play ok on windows with older version(s) of quicktime!

I'm googling around trying to find a way to fix the content of website so it plays with newer quicktime (or convert it all to html5, but that would be big overhaul I think). Asquicktime seems a support nightmare, and has been for some time, especially for older content. Just take a look at all the hacks and work-arounds this software-supplier has to mention: http://sundaysoftware.com/quicktime/

Certainly for new web projects, you want to try to use a newer paradigm than plug-ins, which are going away eventually (in favor or more secure extensions/add-ins).

I landed here because our new videos wouldn't play in iPhoto. I just figured a ridiculously EASY (but not intuitive) way to make them play. No importing, exporting, copying or upgrading. I can't explain why they wouldn't play in the first place, but I'll live with this simple workaround.

Summary of problem:

-Our newly downloaded iPhone 4 videos showed up in iPhoto (7.1.5, running on iMac, OS X 10.8.5).

-Double clicking didn't open them.

-From Quicktime (10.2), I couldn't get to them either. (The iPhoto library file shows inactive -- different issue to figure out later)

After playing around for a bit, this is what worked:

-Right click on movie in iPhoto, click "Show file"

-Double click the movie you want to watch.

-Movie pops up in Quicktime and will play.

That's it! My eyes glazed over at other people's problems and solutions, so I feel lucky that this worked. Since my internet search took me to this thread, I hope this helps someone else. 🙂

I agree,I thought it was just me after reinstalling my OS. So I had a ton of .mov files and had to purchase,(or so I thought) Quick Time Pro,again. I would have never done that if I knew about this.

I have been a loyal Mac user at home/office/studio and also in the publishing world since 1982 and this just stinks!

Apple better get it together...No likes being abandoned as I would think the company had learned!

I have valuable files for my Home business that are backed up on seperate firewire H/D and as of now useless!

I have been working on this problem all day -- devesting from iphoto here as I find the new version is corrupting my photos and causing all sorts of problems, including this one.

Here is what I did to fix it. I went back to my oldest backup -- the one that had not been "coverted" to the new iphoto and I right clicked on the "iphoto library" --- this gives you the option to "show package contents " (thanks ehow: http://www.ehow.com/how_4621237_access-iphoto-library-opening-iphoto.html).

This link suggests that you go to the "Data.noindex" folder. I copied this folder to my desktop (from my old external harddrive). First I used Lightroom (LR) to extract the photos, but the faces and other extras were also included. I don't want these. So I looked around the "Data.noindex" so I looked in "Originals" and the files were there along with UNCORRUPTED ORIGINAL movie files. I know this won't help everyone, but if you have an old back up this is what worked for me.

Hello,

How were able to do this exactly? I have several movies created on my Ipad and uploaded to Iphoto from 3/13 that show time and mbs and say they are quick time movies in the info yet they won't play on Iphoto, and I get a message saying it can't create a file when I try to export it in original or current format. When I exported to Documents in current format, it simply said 0.00 and behaved like a jpg. I tried exporting directly to an external hard drive and it won't do that either. Yet, a movie I created in 5/13, played and exported no problem. Any idea on what my solution may be?

.MOV files won't play anymore
