MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

Hi guys,

I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.

I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.

What happens is this:

1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.

Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:

5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.

5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.

5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.

This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.

So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.

Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.

I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?

I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.

I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?

*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?

Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Same here. Since then, though, I've found something that is much better:

I've found that the problem resides in Airport. Try this experiment. Turn OFF Airport and use the computer for awhile. Also, open and close the screen many times. In short, do everything you can to replicate what makes your computer freeze (for me it's sudden movements, especially opening and closing the screen. My computer also freezes when it is closed and in sleep mode for awhile.)

When I have Airport turned OFF, I cannot get my computer to freeze. Also, turning it OFF and the ON seems to provide a relatively long period of no freeze.

I've just gotten into the habit of turning Airport OFF when I leave the computer for awhile, then turn it on when I come back.

A pain, and I hope that Apple reads these boards. I don't know how to fix the Airport programming that seems to be causing this problem.

The same thing has been happening to me and my MacBook Pro (2007), and it's incredibly frustrating. At times I'm not even able to restart straight away. I took it in to the genius bar and they told me that I needed a new hard drive, and so $200 later I still have the same problem! VERY depressing. If there is a solution to this, without spending big bucks, I'd be very happy to know.

My wife's late 2007 15" MacBook Pro is experiencing the same issues: After running for a few hours, the screen will start flickering, the mouse pointer will turn into the spinning pin wheel (though you can still move it around the screen) and then the entire system freezes. Usually, upon holding down the power button, the system will reboot and resume normal operation. A few times, the system hangs at startup and the Kernel Panic error appears.

This all started about two weeks ago when my wife updated to 10.6.7 (I think she skipped 10.6.6).

So far, I have tried the following:

- Repairing Permissions

- Verifying Disk

- Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

None of this worked.

I even down-graded to 10.6.0 and the problem persists. Please note that this was not a clean install. That said, if 10.6.6 made firmware changes, these may not have been over-written by the down-grade to 10.6.0.

Please keep this forum alive and chime in if you are experiencing similar problems... And especially if you have any solutions! These machines are only 3.5 years old and are not ready to be "thrown away". I really doubt this is a hardware problem as so many people experiencing this after 3 years is too big of a coincidence.

If nothing else, I'm really hoping the upgrade to Lion will fix this!

Definitely take it to the Genius Bar.

I also purchased my 15" MacBook Pro at the end of 2007. When I went in the second time about a week ago, I was informed that there was a recall and they are currently in the process of fixing everything, despite the fact that it is past the three year warantee. I'm looking forward to getting it back, and in working condition!

I had this EXACT problem with a 2008 Mac book pro and now have had it solved.

When I say solved I mean they have replaced the machine with a new one.

I had the flicker and screen freeze happen when I was watching videos in Safari, the mouse was always movable but the computer was frozen. I took the computer to apple and they replaced the Logic board, After a week the problem had actually got worse in the sense now when it flickered it did not stop flickering. I took the mac back to the apple store and they said it happened again because it was a fault between the logic board and the display, by only replacing one of them meant the display had just shorted out the new logic board and it was their fault.

So they replaced the logic board and the display, only for 3 weeks later the display to started randomly yet not very often to flicker again this time with no freezing of the computer, I took it back to the store and they replaced my machine.

they said that they do not know what started the problem and have no fix so if you have any apple care warranty left get the computer exchanged ASAP i was very lucky as i was on the last month of my warranty. #

best of luck, sorry to hear you are having this problem.

Same here. MBP 13, mid 2009, 8GB RAM, 150 GB HD. Problem started out of nowhere 3 days ago. I am so ****** off. Luckily for me I purchased a new Apple Care. I will be calling Apple as soon as I am back in the US. I didn`t buy $1200 laptop so that my screen would flicker and freeze. This is just unacceptable-they will either have to fix this for me or give me a new MBP. You should do the same, take action on it. Talk is cheap.

UGH this is the WORST feeling. I'm having the same problem. Mid 2007 17" MacBook pro. But I haven't upgraded to snow leopard. I'm running 10.5.8. And I use Firefox not Safari.

The flicker just started a few days ago, I swapped the RAM and the flicker hasn't come back but the screen freezes and then patches of pixelated color show up. They went away eventually but ***?

I'm also not able to replicate the problem. I can't figure a pattern, the compu just seems to freak out whenever it feels like it.

From what I've read a lot of people have had their logic boards replaced to no avail. Has anyone found a solution?

Anyone anyone??

I'm having the same problem, screen flickers then locks up except for the mouse. Only thing I can do is a hard reboot. This problem has just started over the last week. I just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. I wasn’t sure at first what the issue was but after reading the above posts I have narrowed it down to Flash content on Safari or FireFox. I called up Apple Support I spent about hour and half rebooting to safe mode and booting to the disk fixing disk permissions and what not. Nothing seams to work. This is very frustrating. 😟

Thank goodness I found this post! I thought my computer was on it's last leg. I have been noticing the screen flicker/freeze the last couple of days. But it doesn't only happen with Safari. It has happened with any video I play (quick view and garage band lessons) so I wouldn't blame it all on safari. I am running 2008 MacBook Pro 2.2ghz 4gb ram NVIDIA Geforce 8600m GT with plenty of HD space.

Hopefully it is just a software issue cause I don't have enough money saws up yet for a new iMac :)

Making a Genius appointment. Read on the post that there might be a recall...

Hi all,

I am also having the same problem with my MBP 17" 2008 (non unibody) 2.4ghz 4GB ram gforce 8600m GT.

So far I have looked into and tried:

1) Clean and apply new cooling paste to the CPU and GPU.

2) Cleaning out the fans

3) Reinstalled OS.

No luck

To test stress the system I have been running youtube videos in safari and firefox at the same time. After a couple of minutes the screen flickers then it goes unresponsive, I can still move the mouse but nothing else. Reboot might work but not always, sometimes I must clear NVRAM to get it booted up again.

So I decided to boot into single mode, the I did a fsck -f followd by exit. Then I saw that the last drivers loaded before launching the GUI was the Paralells drivers. After removing Paralells from Safe Mode my machine started to behave. So far it has been running fine .......

Could this be related to Paralells ?
