MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

Hi guys,

I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.

I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.

What happens is this:

1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.

Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:

5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.

5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.

5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.

This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.

So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.

Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.

I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?

I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.

I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?

*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?

Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Had off-n-on video weirdness the last 2 weeks. Reboots usually took care of it. finally died and wouldn't even reboot. the reboot image was bad. Found this discussion (among others online).

Went to the Genius bar today with the mavbook pro. they saw the same image (attached below) of the main apple and spinning wheel pixelated at startup. The tech inserted a RED memory stick into the USB port. didn't see if he hit some key sequence, but then a few lines of text appeared at the top of the screen with a few codes on it. One of the codes started with NV_then some numbers. He said it was the "nvidia quality problem" and then typed this into his iPAD (which I later received as a receipt in email.)

Wow, I bought the thing Dec 1st 2007, so I "just made it" under the un-announced recall / replacement. Hope all those out there figure it out before the 4 year time limit. (you would hope apple would cover some reasonable period after... after all, have 2 other macbooks, bunches of ipods, 2 iphones, 1 ipad-2... come on, but I didn't need to 'go there' as far as asking this time. when I pick it up in a few days, I'll ask "what if I came in dec 2nd...")

(I do see the online price for this part # is $365-$599 at different places) oddly enough, the store in Delaware had 3 of these boards in stock...

good luck all.

My problem was at least partially solved by totally removing Parallels Desktop 6. I went here http://kb.parallels.com/en/9087 to find the instructions. I'm still getting some jerky motion from time to time, but my MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo with 3 GB of Ram and ATI Radeon X1600 video was locking up within minutes after going to full screen mode everywhere, including Netflix, which isn't Flash, but Silverlight. I don't use Windows much anymore, so no great loss of Parallels. I just use Boot Camp now on the rare occasion when I need to run the nasty Microsoft OS.

I've had this problem too - flickering screen then freezing up, I noticed this especially (but not exclusively) when Safari was running and the laptop got a bit hot. This is how I ended up diagnosing my problem:

1) I got the Safari plugin "ClickToFlas" from http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/ to help identify if this was a flash-related issue. Blocking flash did help reduce the flickerings & subsequent freezes, but not completely.

2) I went into the Energy Saving panel in System Preferences, and changed the setting from "Better Performance" to "Better Battery life" and this COMPLETELY STOPPED THE FLICKERING & FREEZES.

Upon arrival at the AppleStore for my appointment, the guy explained that in my early 2009 17"MBP there are 2 graphics cards, and that changing that setting forces the laptop to use only the lower-spec graphics card rather than both (or was it just the higher-spec one? I can't remember). This meant that the higher-spec one is faulty. Sadly, they did NOT offer a logic board replacement. I was told it would cost 350 GBP (£) which is about 500 dollars! Plus labour I would imagine so I declined as I'm not doing anything that graphics-intensive.

Note to you all: please check your "About this Mac" - More Info - System Report - Graphics/Displays to see if there are TWO graphics cards installed. Just the overview will show you the higher-spec one. Or open the System Information app in your Utilitie Folder and look for the same. My experiences may help you deterimine what's wrong with your graphics card(s)!

Good luck to you all :-)

My macbook pro 17" nov 2007 has just started to do this..... I've had it since new, over 5 years now, and i had heard there was a recall for the NVIDIA card my macbook pro has, but i felt so fortunate that mine seemed to be ok.... So after reading Henk's post, i reckon it will cost the same, if not more to get mine fixed since the recall program stopped towards the end of 2012..... Gutted, especially since i'm travelling tomorrow and need the laptop for work.....

It seems to work ok for about 15 minutes, then the screen freezes, and i can only move the cursor around. If anyone finds any other solution rather than replacing the logic board please let us know. All the best to those with this same problem.....

I can't believe i have only just come across this post! I suffered for years with a late 2007 17" MacBook Pro and after three Apple repair trips (with Apple Care) i had to give up on the flashing screen issue when my Apple Care ran out. I was not told that Apple had a recall for this and it has been sitting on my filing cabinet for two years now! I will have to see about replacing the nvidia card.

The problems all started with a firmware upgrade on parallels and i am glad that it wasn't just me that had all the issues that everyone has posted in this thread!

I've since gone back to Windows (better the devil you know) and I never understood why my foray into the Mac world was so painful. I guess i just had to buy the lemon in the world of Mac!

Hi All,

Unluckily I have the same problem with my MBP 17 inch since a few days, it never did occur before. I have a question, because I have the feeling this could be related to the problem.

I think connecting a second screen on the DVI connector started the problem, or at least increased the problem. I can imagine that plugging in the connector will put some pressure on the internal video card. When the soldering is not that good, any movement will have an effect. So the question is: Did anybody, who is experiencing this problem, can relate this to inserting the DVI connector? Because I will try to get my MBP fixed for free, although the free service period ended last december 2012 [see this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377]. If connecting the second screen is the start of the problem, I might have a good reason for some free service. Now I'm working on my MBP with a DVI cable connected, second screen not on, and we are still in business :).

Thank you all so far,

Peter.

Ok. I dont know if this fix anyone elses problem but my screen would flicker not freezer up my computer as i always force quit safari before it did possibly. However, i did several things and it seems to be working fine for me now. I first went into disk utility and repaired my disk permissions. I then cleared all caches on my computer and home settings. This is accessed through the go button in you finder heading of your desktop. I then cleared my cookies. I then restarted my mac in safe mode. This is done by powering off the mac. Then pressing the shift key and holding it down. As you press and release the power button. Continue to hold shift until the boot loading screen appears then release. It will take a while to boot. Anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Let it run in safe mode for a couple minutes to let it finish making repairs which is does while booting and running in safe mode . Then go into disk utility again and run repair disk premissions. Once completed. Restart your Computer. I did this and mine is running faster and the screen no longer flickers. Hope this helps everyone

I had this flickering & freeze problem too for the last couple of weeks and have replaced my hard drive and a clean install, but no luck. I have aloo a 2009 MacBook with two Graphic cards and I changed my Energy Savings settings also to Better Battery Life and since then no more flickering & freeze. I changed it two days ago, but I guess it works cause I had it 3 to 6 times a day and now for 2 days nothing!
