Cannot Send Mail - the username or password incorrect - help please?

My Yahoo mail account on my iphone which has been working for a year today stopped letting me reply to emails. I can recieve fine but it will not let me reply to messages, comes up with "wrong username and password". I checked in Settings and they are both correct. I have also done the following but to no avaial:

Changed my password to something shorter with just letters
Turned phone on and off
Deleted the account and setup again

If anyone could help I would be most grateful as I have run out of ideas

I too am a Bellsouth.net user accessing via my Iphone (1st generation) through Yahoo Mail. No problems for the past 2 years until this AM and I get the same username/password error. After someone commented on their password automatically changing I checked this as well and oddly enough after I enter my password an additional character is added (rather than one subtracted). I too have done what many others have tried. The only way I can send is by setting up an account in the 'others' category but then I cannot access all of my sub-folders, which I desperately need. Who do you call about this? Apple? Yahoo?

Yup -- Me too. sbcglobal.net user. Exact same symptoms - Suddenly I can receive but not send email. It looks like the sbcglobal.net smtp server has gotten messed up somehow (?) It sure doesn't look like an Apple problem, since I didn't change anything when this suddenly appeared... Tried all the usual things (rebooted iPhone, re-entered smtp server info) Even tried creating a separate, secondary smtp server on the iPhone using the same info as Outlook uses on my laptop. No luck....

**** - I hope they (whoever they are - AT&T? Yahoo?) fix this soon!
Anyone have a fix other than creating an entierly separate mail account (manually) on the iPhone?

Just to report the same frustration - my two Yahoo accounts cannot send mail from iPhone 3G (on Vodafone) - has been working fine for a year, ceased to be able to send on 28 January. Like others, I have checked all the passwords, deleted and reinstalled the account, and powered off/on.
I phoned BT and they say it's nothing to do with Yahoo because the accounts work OK from a PC - they had not heard of the problem being widespread. Could it be anything to do with Vodafone?

It's nice to know I'm not alone in my frustration with sending email via sbcglobal from my 3G iPhone.

Everything has worked perfectly until yesterday when I needed to send an email telling my contract company that I couldn't make it to work. (Yup, in the Midwest and completely snowed in!)

I had to call and wake my recruiter at 6:30 in the morning.

I will be watching this discussion closely to see if/when anyone gets a resolution to this problem.

We forwarded a link to this thread to Yahoo! Customer Care. If we get a more useful response from them, will post it here. (Though I suspect Yahoo will blame AT&T, who will blame Apple, etc.)

MEANWHILE, for those of you on sbcglobal, a workaround is to use SAFARI, go to mail.yahoo.com and log in from there. This should be equivalent to working from the website. You should be able to send mail and have access to your folders.

But this is a patch, not a fix. Clearly, something changed, and someone needs to step up and fix the problem!

Incidentally, we had the same problem a few weeks ago with our Google Apps account. That one was easier to "fix" by turning off the gmail SMTP server. It appears that AT&T wants everyone to use their own SMTP server. The problem in this case is that the iphone won't let you turn off the Yahoo! SMTP server for a Yahoo! mail account. And although the iphone supposedly tries the SMTP servers in sequence, it doesn't appear to be actually working that way.

(Isn't it interesting that we're suddenly having trouble with AT&T just after Verizon announces they'll be selling the iphone?)

BTW, You can turn off any smtp's. And you can select which ones you want your phone to use.

Double check to see if you suddenly have TWO accounts for the same email address. You will not know unless you go to your Settings and check your mail accounts. If you see your Yahoo email account twice, one will be new and needs the password, one is the original one you set up.

We currently have Yahoo email as original Prodigy clients circa 1983. Have had original iphones since 12/07. Email has had few problems, most evident when Yahoo became ATT.

Suddenly yesterday, my wife's email stopped sending only on her iphone. One of the posters gave me the solution, which was to delete the account and to redo it through other, manually adding it. The clue offered was having the folders, which my wife's had that I didn't have. Hers added 2 characters to the password.

Additionally, I synced her iphone to get the latest OS for the original.
I feel badly that I lost the posting since when originally viewed, I wasn't signed in to my mac.com account to post.

Hope this helps, and thanks to the person with the idea. I hope they get back their folders.

I have had the exact same issue since yesterday afternoon. I can receive email but cannot send email. I am getting a message that either my user name or password are not correct. I have had my Yahoo email account set up on my iPhone since October 2009 with no issues. In addition I am also not getting any pictures on incoming mail - just little blue question marks where the picture should be. If I tap on a link like that it will open in Safari and I can see the picture.

I first called AT&T. We had an ice storm in the area yesterday and first they tried to tell me it was because of the storm.....but it started yesterday before the storm. In addition, if that was the issue I highly doubt that only outgoing mail would be effected!! Finally talking to a rep for a while she transferred me to Apple. I actually ending up speaking to someone who tried to help me. His suggestion was to delete the email account, shut the phone off, redraft and add the email account back. He also suggested I run the upgrades on my phone - haven't done any upgrades since I bought the phone.

I will contact Apple tomorrow and let them know that this appears to be a bigger issue than just me! If I find out anything I will post the info.

I just started having the same problem of not being able to send e-mails today. Went through a lot of resettings turning on and off, checking SMTP server, same exact message "can not send mail username or password incorrect. Spoke with AT&T support, unable to figure out, spoke with Apple, unable to help me as my support ability expired and in order to talk to their tech support I have to activate a one time fee of $29 - did not do it. Went back to AT&T hoping I could get another Tech support specialist more knowledgeable - transfered me to their Business Center Tech Support. I was told that there is a national power outage and they are receiving the same messages as we did. There is nothing they can do about it but to wait. Very frustrating.

I also called AT&T -- no help, but they gave me a number to call for "this kind of support issue". It was Apple (nice voice-activated help system), but no help there either - they said they were unaware of the problem (I guess they don't read their own discussions forum) - although they offered me the "Apple Support" contract.

It's probably not an Apple problem. I haven't changed a thing on my iPhone. It's probably either an AT&T network issue or a Yahoo issue or a (whoever manages their smtp server) issue.

We can expect to see lots of finger pointing and (maybe) an eventual "fix" by whoever broke things in the first place.... Grr....

In the meantime, you can probably use Safari to go directly to Yahoo mail (at mail.yahoo.com) and work pretty normally -- Thanks to the earlier message!

SOMEONE needs to step up, take responsibility, and FIX this problem!
