Bluetooth lags on new Mac Mini w/ Wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad

Hi everyone,

I just bought a new mac mini (the basic model) and attached it via HDMI to a HD TV. I bought the mac wireless keyboard and magic trackpad to go with it. Everything works except that both the keyboard and mouse are consistently slow. Not quite to the point of un-useable, but very noticeable.

I've read that it might be radio interference with the bluetooth signal. To test this, I put my Macbook Pro right next to the new mac mini (while it and the screen were on) and paired the keyboard and mouse to the macbook pro. Everything was super fast, no lag - so that leads me to think the problem is with the Mac Mini. I've tried playing with all the bluetooth options, to no avail.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've also tried attaching a bluetooth magic mouse and had the same slowdown. Nothing seems to affect the lag, it's very consistent and probably around half a second between keystroke or mouse movement and it's reflection on the screen.

Thanks,

-Mike

I have a similar setup: Mac Mini that's being used as an HTPC. It's connected via HDMI to my LED TV. I recently purchased the MTP to complete my setup but it's been starting to lag. I've changed the batteries (even though they were reported as being 85% full), checked to the output refresh rate (which was at 60), I've disabled and enabled bluetooth, removed and re-added the MTP, in brief I've tried quite a bit to resolve this issue to no avail.

Anyone come across any definitive solutions? And no, telling me to buy a bluetooth dongle (as some have suggested) or a new mouse is not a solution.

Guys,

I just bought a Mac Mini 2011 i5 and the blue tooth wireless mac keyboard, using a logitech mouse temporarily (I wasn't sure if I liked the apple $70 mouse...) and I am having the exact same problems. I don't really see wifi interference as a valid reason for the problems; as I type this (I generally type at 60-70 wpm) it is working perfectly and the keyboard is pretty nice.

However, 4 minutes ago when I was signing up to post a reply, the lag and aggrivation it causes is unbelieveable. Same issue with the logitech mouse, lagging and creating issues. Even the mini's performance of a simple task such as opening firefox is pretty intermittant.

I'm loving OSX but considering that this mac mini and it's accessories are not up to par. I bought the Mac for it's reliability and so far the intermittant performance of the Mac itself and particularly the blue tooth accessories is not going to cut it.

I just got a 2011 Mac Mini, but I got a Wirless mouse and Wirless keyboard with USB transponders. I was not about to pay over $70.00 for the Apple keyboard and mouse and trackpad. The LogiTech K250 is a pretty decent keyboard. The LogiTech mouse is awesome. You do have to go through steps to identify the keyboard in the Mac Mini, but it is worth it from what I have experienced so far. It is also much much cheaper.

I use my Mac Mini with a 40in HDTV using a DVI to HDMI connector and it seems to be working so far. I had to do some adjusting using the Underscan in System Preferences to see the menu bar, but other than that it is ok. I recommend wireless keyboard and mouse with USB transponders. So far the Mac Mini works great as a home theater PC. I bought it because I wanted a new desktop computer and this one has that capability as well as HTPC capabilities.

I had this problem - strange jerky bluetooth mouse behaviour with my Magic Trackpad. I found it to be caused by the Wi-Fi signal. When I turned off Wi-Fi, the issue went away.

To resolve, I changed my wireless channel from 11 to 1 on my router to change the frequency of the Mac's wireless conversations. Not had the issue since !

THAT FIXED IT FOR ME:

I had the jittery keyboard with lots of repeated keys. I was using CHANNEL 8 on my wifi.

So I did and experiment (based on MitchF's post). I switched back and forth between CHANNEL 1 and 8 and typed a few words in TextEdit (via BlueTooth Keyboard) to see if there was interference in Channel 8.

So effectively what everyone is saying is that there is no "real" solution short of changing peripherals altogether and I concur. I had this problem and quickly sold my trackpad on CL. I got back quite a bit for it and invested it in a Logitech keyboard trackpad combo. It's a great device. Small light and perfect for an HTPC setup. I think it's the K300. Snatch one up if they're still available. And Remote PC for iOS is also a good alt and in life's VNC as well.

I don't think that what everyone is "effectively" saying. If you read some of the responses, some folks have had luck with the NTSC/60HZ setting and/or changing the WiFi channel.

I've been experiencing this issue with my Mac Mini. My router sits right next to the Mini, so I suspected the WiFi issue. So far, after changing the channel on my router, things seem to be going ok. We'll see how it goes.

Mac Mini on OS 10.10.4 (Late '12 SO-DIMM RAM and a single DisplayPort connection) with the EXACT same problem:

1-It is intermittent and entirely unpredictable.

2-Sometimes for a few minutes, others for hours, the latency is terrible.

3-None of the fixes posted so far have worked.

Impact- The keyboard is somewhat usable if you just need to log into something, but the trackpad is useless, I can spend minutes trying to every try to get the thing to "land" on a specific button, icon, app, etc.

FIX: I recently switched to a new AC/backwards compatible wireless router. My mini has only N so I put that on my N Network and my devices that support AC to their own. After trying every posted idea, I had my N mini join the AC network instead (even though it is still stuck at N bandwidth) and my problems stopped immediately and have not returned. I cannot explain this with my limited wireless knowledge, but it worked.

I would think my neighbors (about 40 show up on my Mini - 36 still N) would cause the same problem, and my Mini being connected to one less N-labeled network wouldn't make any difference if there was simply too much interference. I think that there is an actual hardware or driver problem on the Mini that causes N and Bluetooth enabled devices (maybe the Mini and the Keyboard/Track Pad both happen to be more susceptible. This would explain the greater volume of people with this 2+ device problem).

Please reply if you try this fix and find that it works.
