Twenty minutes is too long for a backup!

    Try a system Reset:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.

    Please post back with results.

dont like the sound of that will I lose my data ?

A Reset does not delete apps, music, photos, movies, or any other data.

thanks but it didnt help. tried agqain, 20min to go from the stripey bar to starting backup.12 hours in and its less than a third of the bar completed. Is there anyway to load the OS upgrade without doing a backup ?

Not that I am aware of but, you might wish to download the 4.2 User Guide and look for ideas there. Pay special attention to page 170.

How often do you normally sync and backup your iPad? My sister had not synced her iPhone since she got it and when she finally decided to sync to do the update, the backup took over 8 hours.

thats the big joke- all my stuff is synched already, nothing new, but still forced to back up before upgrade will load. trying again 5 hours 30% complete.

Finally decided to get my money back anyway, this thing is the worst piece of junk i ever had the misfortune to be conned into buying. my first and last apple purchase.

thanks Philly-phan. I would laugh if i wasnt already crying.

hee hee good one though. and the best advice i had today. I favour dropping it from the 101st floor whilst attached to the Ipad designer

Have you done any troubleshooting on your Windoze machine? With Windoze, you need to disable AV software/anti-phishing software/firewalls/etc in order to do a sync. All that extra stuff simply clogs your connection and makes syncing next to impossible.

The text that you quoted is on page 171, not page 170.

You're not very patient when problems arise, are you?

7 hours and 50% complete; massive improvement-
all i had to do was delete everything from the ipad. How could i be so dumb, oh wait so whats the pont of a back up then !! So 7 hours to go but looks like the ipad battery will die in about 6 hours... it wont charge from USB (another prole apple want to ignore

Patience? yes I can see how that would come in handy if you are an apple user. I also get it, apple is for people who like to rebuild their systems in order to do even a simple task, making it simple would take all the fun out of it.

Well i been at this for 3 weekends now and Ipad and laptop out of use for most of that time. So yes patience has gone. What i dont understand is why everyone just accepts this nonsense.

    Anyway appreciate the assistance.

Will look at some of the new tablets on the market and stick with my Vaio and blackberry for now.

The majority of people never experience this. For most people, a backup takes 15 minutes or so.

Just over 8 hours in and doesnt seem to have moved much say 52% complete

Well actually seems to be a very common problem. i have been on several forums and plenty of evidence that this is a fundamental problem with iTunes. There are third party fixes being written e.g.

I might try that before chucking the thing

I feel for you, but disagree that this is a "very common problem" - if so, you could be sure that the media reporters and Android proponents would be letting us all know about it. Some people are having these problems, but people don't go to a discussion forum to say "everything's great!".
