Welcome to Apple Discussions.

There are several steps which could help your situation.

1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Select your drive, then click on Repair permissions. There might be quite a long list of errors reported. You don't need to worry about this as long as it finishes with the statement - permissions repaired. This usually takes about 10 mins - a little longer if there are many corrections to make.

Following this restart the computer and shut down. If all goes well you probably have no further need to do anything.

2. If there's still a problem, open Disk Utility again and this time select Verify Disk. If it reports no errors there's no need to go further with this. If there is an error reported you need to insert your original installation disk and restart holding the c-key until the grey screen with the Apple logo appears.

When it gets to 'select your language', do this and click 'continue'. On the next screen there will be a top menu bar. Locate Disk Utility in the Tools menu and this time run Repair disk. When it has completed rerun it to check that no further repairs are needed.

After this Quit DU and quit the installer. The computer will restart. Again check whether your problem has been resolved.

Report back to this forum with what has happened.

Be happy at least yours is on. I turned my of properly after using in last night. It worked as good as it usually does. Then the next more I go to turn it on. Solid light it front. No video. Some internal noise (guess that's good). Called Apple Care, couldn't diagnosis it till I brought it in. Here's the kicker. I LIVE NO WHERE NEAR AN APPLE STORE.

Well, you are not alone. For the last couple days, my MBP has not been shutting down. Like you, I get to the blue screen with spinning wheel, which spins, and spins, and spins. I have to hold down the power button to shut down. This just started from no where. It must be an app problem somewhere. I wonder if it is connected to runninng Parallels (although it has been working fine), or Office, or who knows? Any other suggestions? I ran Onyx which went fine, but apparantly did not fix the problem.

as I understand from what I read in this forum, the problem is a recent one. So can it be because of a software update?

I do not use iTunes so I cannot speak for that one, but I have the same problem if I use any Office 2011 program. Otherwise, the computer turns off just fine. It's only when I use Office.

i have also done Repair Permissions and Verify Disk with no problems.

Any news on this?

I have this problem on a MacBook Pro 15" running 10.6.8. I believe I have it troubleshot down to something in Office, but I can not figure out what. If you start word at all, even if you quit out of the program and let the process die as shown in the Activity Monitor, it will not shut down properly. I have updated Office until it no longer tells me there are updates, removed all other Launch Items from the Users pane and the home library and root library folders. Does anyone know anything?

I still have the same problem with Office and iTunes.

I spoke to a couple Apple stores while traveling. They could not give me an idea except for suggesting to reboot the whole thing.

However, people with the same problem here seem to still have it despite a fresh re-install etc.

Before I attempt to reinstall the system I hope to find a solution here.

Those who have the same probllem, have you ever tried an antiviurus? Could that be the reason?

I have the same problem and it appears to me that applecare cant help on this issue. They advised to do all the PRAM key sequence and run repair/verify and also do a whole bunch of deletions. These deletions involve deleting logs caches safari stuff etc. I was told to do this weekly but the problem returns as soon as i run an app/software.

My MacBook Pro is less than 9months old.

It came with snow leopard and I did an upgrade to Lion. I have all the latest upgrades and over 8mg ram and plenty of hard disk space . Somehow I get the feeling that I am going to have to reformat and reinstall everything which kinda reminds me of my window days.

I noted in these postings that there does not seem to be a resolution to this problem.

I am dissapointed as I have backed up but dont have a bacup Mac to use whilst I am doing this re install etc and as a small business I will ironically have to use my old office PC to run my business as the Macs are too expensive for me to have spares kicking around.
