Welcome to Apple Discussions.

There are several steps which could help your situation.

1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Select your drive, then click on Repair permissions. There might be quite a long list of errors reported. You don't need to worry about this as long as it finishes with the statement - permissions repaired. This usually takes about 10 mins - a little longer if there are many corrections to make.

Following this restart the computer and shut down. If all goes well you probably have no further need to do anything.

2. If there's still a problem, open Disk Utility again and this time select Verify Disk. If it reports no errors there's no need to go further with this. If there is an error reported you need to insert your original installation disk and restart holding the c-key until the grey screen with the Apple logo appears.

When it gets to 'select your language', do this and click 'continue'. On the next screen there will be a top menu bar. Locate Disk Utility in the Tools menu and this time run Repair disk. When it has completed rerun it to check that no further repairs are needed.

After this Quit DU and quit the installer. The computer will restart. Again check whether your problem has been resolved.

Report back to this forum with what has happened.

Thanks for suggestions but does not make any difference.

I have spoken to Apple again about this issue and we have tried using the safe start-up mode and then switching off any unnecessary start-up items.

In addition we went into the recovery mode and did the usual disk permissions.

Then of course we tried disconnecting the fast external hard drive which was connected with a Thunderbird connection and the large display screen which was also connected using a Thunderbird. This made a difference.

It may have been the combination of using repair disk permissions and verifying disc in recovery mode and then trying to power off or switch off (Shutdown)normally without using the power switch that works.

It may have been the combination of doing this and also disconnecting the external drive and display. E

The problem was materialising or manifesting after using the computer for a few hours.

By doing the above then the computer would shut down normally without having to override with the power button.

I'm going to see how the above works and then I will try a complete reinstall of line without formatting-simply going through recovery and reinstalling lion. If that does not work I think I'm going to have to do reformat and reinstall line from new.

I'm convinced that it is something to do with being a newbie Mac user having used Windows for over 15 years.

When I bought my MacBook Pro just under a year ago of course I spent the next few weeks and months piling on various apps and software and probably spending a small fortune.

At 1st and following an upgrade as opposed to a clean install of Lion everything was fine but this problem started a few weeks into the New Year after Christmas.

I tried uninstalling clean my Mac and also one to other software applications that I have read about that are not advised such as Kapursky and I've also tried all the other little gimmicks such as making sure all applications are closed etc.

it is probably something to do with Lion and perhaps ultimately a fresh install on a newly formatted hard drive and being more selective and only installing applications that I really do need rather than those which you install and never ever use is the right idea.
