1.Connect your iPhone to the computer using the supplied USB cable and launch the iTunes application, if it does not launch automatically. iTunes displays your iPhone on the left panel under "Devices."
2.Click your iPhone on the iTunes panel and click the "Info" tab. Click "Sync contacts with" and select "Outlook."
3.Select "All Contacts" if you want to sync all the contacts from your iPhone to Outlook. If you want to select specific contacts, click "Selected groups" and place a check on the contacts you want to sync to Outlook.
4.Click "Apply" to sync your iPhone contacts to Outlook. Click the "Eject" button on the right panel and disconnect your phone from the computer. Close iTunes.
5.Launch Outlook and click the "Contacts" tab. You should see the imported iPhone contacts.

You won't have such worries if you use the iPhone file manager to back up your iPhone contacts to Outlook.

OOutlook is not listed when I connect. Sync Contacts on iTunes says: your contacts are being synced over the air from icloud. Over the air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone. How to do that?
I tried this. Outlook imported 6 contacts, my iPhone lost around 1000 contacts. had to restore from an iPhone Backup I luckily made earlier today or I'd have lost 1000 contacts....
any other ideas?
Thanks, this worked perfectly for me on my iPhone 6 Plus almost four years later.
Try iPhone PC Suite. It not only lets you transfer contacts from iPhone to PC, but also export contacts to Windows Address Book and Outlook. In addition, it also enables you to transfer contacts from computer to iPhone, remove duplicate contacts, and manage contacts on iPhone.
