Macbook Self Assigned IP address connection problem

Hi everyone

I bought an MBP in December 2011, 13'' running MACOSX10.6.6

I have very stable connections at home and various locations including public WiFi connections, hotels etc but cannot get a connection to my Work's WiFi.

At work we have several wireless access points which are linked to our buildings server, however when I try to connect my Macbook to the network the airport bar says it has a self assigned IP address and cannot connect to the internet. We have reset the wireless routers at work, and other devices manage to interact with the network and connect to the internet no problem.. just the Macbook won't connect.

To try and fix I have tried renewind the DHCP lease however it has no effect on the problem.

Any suggestions anyone?

None of the suggested solutions worked when I had this problem but this did:

POSSIBLE SOLUTION! OK. I had this problem on my sister's macbook pro when I was beside her connected to my macbook! The problem was the WAN network, but there is a simple solution, you might just have to play around with it. Try the following. Just one will work. If you try the first and it doesn't work continue down the list.

1. Enter a dollar sign before you enter the password to the wifi network (i.e. $abcd1234)

2. Enter a zero-x before the password (i.e. 0xabcd1234 OR 0Xabcd1234) The x may be lower case or capital.

3. Put the password in quotation marks (i.e. "abcd1234").

Hope this helps. I just spent 30 min on the phone with apple care (that she paid for!) and the guy told me there was nothing I could do but call my internet provider and have them change the WEP to WPA2. While this might not be a bad idea, it was not ideal and did not help with the online work she needed to do tonight for her job as it was after hours for my internet company. The guy from apple care who was surprisingly rude said it was just a know issue that macs had and nothing could be done. Funny how my daughter and I were both on the same network on our MACs! And have always used that network on our MACs! Sorry just had to vent but the above worked for me!

wow, i was so hopeful when i read this. but it didn't work. went thru each variation. i am laughing at the idea of calling verizon and telling them they should change their type of network! yes, that will happen! lol.

i can't believe that apple just won't come up with a fix for this, considering the number of users who have reported it.

Here is my solution to the self assigned ip adress problem.

Before doing this make sure you have the network password saved somewhere as you will need to renter the password to setup

Fist step go to network preference pane and in the preference pane do the steps below

Turn airport of

Got to advanced and select the network that you are having problems with and click on he minus sign to delete that network

click on ok and then apply

Second step go to key chain access and delete the password for the network you just deleted in he preference pane

Third step turn airport back on and select the network again and renter the password

I hope this works it works for me on wep

This worked great for me. Many thanks sir.

I got another solution that worked properly on my MBP that had a self-assigned IP adress.

I already did all those troubleshoot steps posted in many threats for this issue and I know that I was not the only one who still cannot connect to his own network in home or work so I went to my modem configuration page that in this case was 192.168.1.254 for a modem 2WIRE 2701 (you may find yours in the sticker of your modem for advanced settings).

First step: connect the ethernet cable from your modem to your laptop (it will be the yellow or blue cord).

Next If you dont have a modem 2WIRE you will need to figure out how to access to the modem page, like I said before I found the link to the page on the sticker of the modem.

2nd: I typed 192.168.1.254 on the bar adress of any web browser, then I found the configuration page, next click Home Networking ( the icon of this option are 3 computers ) on the TOP of the page.

3rd: Again on the top of the page select Wireless settings (blue or purple font)

Note: when you click on wireless settings it will prompt a window asking for a password, this password must be 12345, 123456, your wireless key or another personalized password that someone entered.

4th: Now you will be able to see on the top of the page Configure wireless network, something like that, down of that you will see Identify network, and the name of your network (I recommend you to change it to your name of something else)

5th: Next you will see wireless channel option, change it to 6.

6th: The option below Wireless channel is Wireless security, there will be the word "Authentication" and next to it selext WEP-Open, next click on Use personalized encryption key and on the white box below enter a 10 digit password (write down that password it is the new wireless key of your modem)

Now go to the bottom of the page and click SAVE

You have a "new network" right now so please go to system preferences>network and erase network and in Keychain access erase the password for the network.

Then try to access again to your new network named with the new password and it will be done.

Note: this can be done in a modem 2WIRE, If you have a different modem, try to find out the options I stated up and follow the same steps

If you have a different modem or third party router in less words:

Rename your network and change your wireless password (WEP key, encription key).

Erase the network that is failing on the mac.

Enter the new stuff and start surfing wirelessly again

Please dont doubt in asking here for any questions about this troubleshoot steps

That's the router configuration.

5th: Next you will see wireless channel option, change it to 6.

Changing the channel to a different value (doesn't have to be 6) may or may not work, depending on what the problem is.

6th: The option below Wireless channel is Wireless security, there will be the word "Authentication" and next to it selext WEP-Open

Do NOT use WEP. This protocol is old and completely insecure. It can be broken in a matter of minutes, with tools widely available on the Internet, requiring next to no expertise.

Apple says unambiguously,

"Do not use WEP unless it is the only Wi-Fi security type that your device supports, and be aware that it is now very unsecure. If you must use WEP, try to configure your WEP Wi-Fi network on a separate, isolated network segment that contains only the devices that require WEP. Then, use a network router to bridge the isolated WEP network into your main WPA network."

Use WPA/WPA-2. If your router does not support WPA, get a new one; if it's a 'gateway' (combo device), like the 2Wire 2701, get the latest model, which does support WPA. (If the device is leased from your ISP, insist that they change it to a newer model, which supports WPA.)
