Macbook Self Assigned IP address connection problem

Hi everyone

I bought an MBP in December 2011, 13'' running MACOSX10.6.6

I have very stable connections at home and various locations including public WiFi connections, hotels etc but cannot get a connection to my Work's WiFi.

At work we have several wireless access points which are linked to our buildings server, however when I try to connect my Macbook to the network the airport bar says it has a self assigned IP address and cannot connect to the internet. We have reset the wireless routers at work, and other devices manage to interact with the network and connect to the internet no problem.. just the Macbook won't connect.

To try and fix I have tried renewind the DHCP lease however it has no effect on the problem.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks sebgod,

I had a similar problem with my MacBook - it would assign a self-addressed IP and I couldn't access the internet. Deleting the network AND the passwords (all that had my wifi title in it, thanks to a suggestion by ZainfromSF) from keychain, it seemed to work.

BTW, I had run a my disk utility to check for errors. I had many permissions that needed to be fixed and I also had to repair the disk using my original install disk. I wonder if that had anything to do with it (a corruption in the files?)

Tried everything, from sebgod's idea, to putting the password in inverted commas to whatever. What finally worked was going into the home router control panel, navigating to "devices" and deleting the mac. When the mac tried to log in again it was given a new ip address and Bingo!

As people have noted there are loads of different fixes for this of which only one works, so it's a bugger.

So I tried a few things. Erasing all my networks from the keychain was the first. I tried several solutions here and none of them worked. I am not very good with Software which is why I hate making changes. I use my computer for real simple things so to figure out things takes me a very long time.

What fixed the problem for me was..erased all the Networks from my keychain. I then went to "Open Network Preferences" and used the "Assist me" feature. I followed the steps (make sure you know the password to the Server or Internet WiFI connection) mine of course was my home Wifi. I gave it a name....entered the WiFI connection and then the password and lo and behold my problem was fixed.

Now this problem started on a Wifi Network where I work. So when I get back there I will see if the problem is fixed. Other than that my home Network now works and I am happy. Next step because I work away from home is to make sure the Wifi Network works there to keep in touch with my family.

First off all i am surprised by the amount off issues related to this problem and nothing seems to be done about it.

Anyhow

I have an imac two ipads and an iphone in my family. But for the imac they work fine but the imac has the self assigned ip address problem. I even every now and again manage to connect and within 5 minutes the imac falls back into assigning an self assigned ip address with the usual result not network on my imac.

My airport utility shows the intenet globe in orange and does not seem to find my time capsule and airport device.

Again my ipad functions normaly.

My network setup assistant shows green on wifi green on wifi settings orange on network settings green on isp and red on internet and serve.

I have tried all the options from previous posts. It makes you crazy every time the same thing and so many people having the same problem.

I am having the same problem - I cannot connect to my wi-fi router at work though I am able to connect at home. At work, I can connect with my iPhone and my iPad. I have tried to delete all the key chain stored passwords, etc. I have tried every suggestion except for tinkering with the router at my office. But my husband was able to connect to the wi-fi router last night with his Dell so it seems like it is definitely something related to MacBook Pro *sigh*

I'm having the same thing. Baught an "on networks n300" router from frys today for 15 bucks. Works great. Att uverse gave us a new modem today for replacing the old 3600 2wire one that was causing issues (lost connection freezing bad wifi every 2 or 3 days). Not sure if this one will go bad too or if its just uverse. Its a "3801hgv". So but the uverse wifi is G based and not very good and poor in some areas. So I got some repeates from tplink and this router. Works great. But not connecting. You can't have 2 DHCP on same network and uverse doesn't let you disable DHCP. So everything is ethernet to uverse att modem-router. And wifi was disabled because you can do that at least. And since I can't disable DHCP on uverse I disable DHCP on the other router. Funny thing is my mac mini and lenovo ideapad s9 I got off ebay works fine. But my dads macbook pro 2006 + 2011 won't connect. And my cellphone (alcatel one touch evolve) won't connect. I've tried turning off the wifi and turning it back off and rebooting and switching the security wpak2 or whatever its called. I forget the settings. When I switch it does not work and when I switch back it works. So its connecting with default settings but macbooks are not connecting.

So few questions.

1. Do I need DHCP for wifi? Or can I leave it disabled and still use wifi portion of new router?

2. But if its router settings then why is my mini connecting and not others. All should not work. I have partitioned in 2 so to keep 10.7 for my pronter and other things not compatible with 10.9. And 10.9 is working with new router. Haven't tried 10.7 yet. And macbook 2006 is 10.6 and 2011 is 10.7. Perhaps mavericks is better at wifi than previous versions.

3. Or should I just return the router and stick with one router that att gave me and use some repeaters where there is no signal. I was hoping n would N would be better as my 2011 mini has N also. But since internet is not fast either and is only 18mb n is probably over kill. I'm hoping the new router can work though anyhow cuz my repeaters have a wps button needed on the router. And the att router is outdated by todays standards and has no wps button. It will work without but setup is a pain and that would make life so much easier. And the nbew rpouter has a wps button.

Hi Guys,

I have had this problem on and off again for a few months, it seemed to fix itself after a few hours each time and then went away altogether last year.

Bought a new Macbook Air today and was having the same issue - what worked for me was going into the router settings and manually assigning an IP address to the MAC address of my computer, then restarting the computer. Didn't work before the restart.

Hope this helps someone and hope apple finally does something about this... pretty riduculous that it has gone on this long without some kind of communication from them...
