Office 2011 and Clipboard Issue

I have had a problem going back to Office 2008 where anything copied and pasted into Office applications from modern Macintosh program like Mail, Safari, TextEdit cause an immediate freeze with Word and Excel and presumably PowerPoint. Microsoft says it is an Apple issue. I have done all the usual things like permissions fixing, trying a brand new accounts, totally removing and resinstalling Word, removing duplicate fonts, etc . It happens on my laptop but not on other machines here at school.

As you have experienced the same issue with both Office 2008 and Office 2011, and we have fully removed and reinstall the software with the same results. You have also tested this in a New User profile, and in SafeBoot.

When you copy and paste on the Mac, it is using the Mac Clipboard to complete this function. Office for Mac does not have a separate Clipboard. The error log you are getting when this happens is a Kernel Panic error which is generated by the Mac Operating System, not directly from Word.

In the error log the ClipBoard is referenced several times ( 2 OleProcessClipboardAE + 2175 ) prior to the Kernel log ending:

You noted that this is an older Mac, did you upgrade on this Mac from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and if so, were you experiencing this same issue before upgrading the Operating System?

Unfortunately, it will be necessary to contact Apple Support and have them look into this for you. This may be related to Fonts, permissions or something on the HardDrive, but we have no way of determining this.

Please let me know if you would like for me to archive the case at the present time and the case can then be reactivated by your response after contacting Apple Support.

I've had this problem ever since updating to Word for Mac 2011. I've tried all the remedies suggested here except switching off Smart Cut and Paste, which I'd find very inconvenient to switch off, and Word is still freezing several times a day on Pasting text within a Word document, and also when using Drag and Drop text within a Word document.

In Office:mac 2011 try Edit>Copy to Scrapbook (Shift+Alt+C)

Everything would hang with the original Command+C shortcut (or any version of normal copying), but this seems to work on my Excel file. I have no idea what the Scrapbook is, but it does the job.

Hi, so I figured out a solution for this problem for me. I have a workbook that had a table in one of the tabs. I had accidentally extended the table down to row 100,000 or whatever Excel cuts off at. This made a ginormous table. When I deleted all the extraneous rows from the table, the problem stopped happening.

If I copy to scrapbook instead of the normal command copy there is no hanging, yet every command copy in excell hangs for 10 seconds.

Also this does not happen with every document.

I have just begun to wrestle with this issue. In addition to the Cut/paste freeze, I have noticed that every time I Force quit word and restart it to go back and see if it saved any changes...that the autosave preference has reverted back to the default of every 10 minutes. anyone else noticed this? Tried to set autosave at 1 minute to keep the interval short and lose less work...but even when I caught the program reverting back and reset it at one minute, I seem to lose most of my work....

I am also having this issue on a new macbook air with mountain lion and office 2011. Tried uninstalling office completely and re-installing, no change. Tried switching to .docx instead of .doc, no change. This seems to mostly happen with what my coworker describes as 'dirty documents' ones that have been handed back and forth between computers.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Also having the same issue here. How can this not be the highest priority issue for the Microsoft Office and Apple teams? Sure, iWork is nice but Office is the mainstream productivity suite for those of us who work in the real world. And this has been driving me crazy for months. Many of the proposed solutions I see seem to be of the "stand on one leg while wafting incense around" variety... given its prevalence it must be possible for the MS/Apple teams to reproduce, and then see where in the call stack the app's hung up. It's not rocket science, guys, but it is about to drive me to move back to Windows. That and the terrible Outlook for Mac.

I'm having the same issue too...have been for a long time. This is ridiculous!

When I attempt to copy text from Safari and then "Paste and Match Formatting" in Word, the software completely freezes and my MacBook Pro internal fan starts revving up like it is heading for takeoff! I have to force quit, then reopen and sometimes it works the second time around...other times, it freezes again.

Ridiculous. Is there really no fix?! I've been clicking the prompt 'send details to Apple?' after many of the crashes...hopefully they are starting to get the message.

Does anyone have any new details on this issue?

I notice that when this happens Microsoft Word 2011 is running at 106%of CPU, but only in 5 threads.

Hi all,

i had this issue on my Office mac in Excel. Carshing and pinwheel in super tiny copy and paste actions.

I think i found the reason: Do you have "Conditional Formats" in your Excel? (i work in german, there its named "Bedingte Formatierung")

I think in _every_ case of copy and pasting data, excel adds a row in "Rules", often the same rule a above.

I found about 500 Rules in my excelsheet..
