Is my Magic Mouse Dead?

I've had it a couple of months only. Today it said the batteries were low and I should change them but when i put new batteries in and made sure it was on there is now no little green light and the system Bluetooth is unable to find the mouse.

What should I do now?

Imac, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Try this. I had the same problem and called AppleCare. This is what they told me to do.
Lost wireless mouse
FIX- power down computer. Hold SHIFT, CONTROL, OPTION and POWER BUTTON down for 10 seconds and then release. Power on computer. Move pointer over Bluetooth icon on menu at top right. Choose “Set up Bluetooth Device”. When window opens up turn off the mouse for 2 seconds and turn back on. Mouse should show up in window. Pair mouse.

It's been 5 months since I purchased multitouch magic mouse and I have the same problem. I'd suggest you to take it to Genius Bar and get it replaced. I am already on 4th Mouse!! I've been taking it to Genius bar and getting it replaced almost every month. Whats strange is, energizer batteries that come along with the mouse seem to work fine and after 1 month of usage when I swap them with duracell, this random disconnection problem arises, everytime I lift the mouse whilst scrolling results in disconnection. Random mouse shakes, turning on and off seems to bring it back to life. And sometimes it won't even turn on.

This is totally unacceptable for a mouse to disconnect with movements. I'm glad that stuffing paper seems to work for some people. But for a mouse for that price and build quality should not have such basic connectivity problems imo. 😟

It's strange to read all these messages talking about contacts and so on, because I was using my wireless mouse for more than 3 years with Leopard and Lion without any problem. Only when I bought a Mac Mini with Mountain Lion installed, the problems started. At first it was hard to pair the mouse, and even when I succeded to pair, sometimes it stopped, etc. I read some advices in the internet about the problem, I have modified some stuff in the system, turned off spotlight, updated the system several times, etc. Now it is working perfectly. The only thing I noticed is that the batteries do not last too long; much less than when I was using it with Leopard and Lion.

So, in my case, I'm certain that the problem is Mountain Lion, and not batteries or contacts.

So Energizer batteries are the ONLY ones that work in my mouse. I tried them again today, no light came on. I tried pressing the back in. Still no light. I shook the batteries (which has probably been proven to never work), I took them out, put the dead batteries back in, took them out, tried restarting.. basically everything. In desperation, I start to shake the mouse itself. Still no light.

In a fit of rage I slammed the mouse onto my desk, and the green light comes on. Works fine now.

I had the same problem, I use mobe-e, I charged and charged and charged the battery by placing the mouse over the mobe-e pad but nothing happened, the green was still off, no life. I have taken the batteries out and with a very small screwdriver I scratched the contacts a little bit, then there was a kind of little metal folded in 2 in the batteries, I've just unfolded it a little bit in order it creates more pressure/contact when I insert the batteries. I've did it and place the mouse over the pad just a few secods and Whoala!!! the green light was on and the mouse worked again after 3 days dead. I was seriously thinking in buying a new mouse but my days shinned again 🙂 .Hope it helps, if you don't have mobe-e charger just try to scratch a little bit the batteries. Good luck!

I've had sort of these problems, too. WIth 2 Macbooks and an iMac matters a bit complicated here. No green light after battery change, etc. on both ⚠ of my mice. Reliable solution: Turn off the mouse, delete all mice from the bluetooth list, then turn on the desired mouse. After a short time it will show up for pairing! It seems to be an issue when the mouse has been paired already with another computer.

I can no longer use the Magic Mouse. I had solved the problem, it worked ok for a long time, despite spending a lot of battery, but now it began to get erratic again and I cannot solve the problem. After I installed Lion, appeared several problems with Magic Mouse. Now I'm using the wired Apple mouse. I would like to know if anyone knows about a wireless mouse from another manufacturer that works on Maverick without these problems.

I gave up with the Magic Mouse.

Thanks for updating us. Just a little hint, sometimes it is better to start your own thread than latch onto one that has been around so long. Some people may think you haven't read all 100 answers in the thread and not bother. (Frankly, I'd think several times about reading a thread this long. 😀)

You might try to do that and include some details about which of your machines is affected, how long you have had the mouse, if it is a replacement for a wired mouse, whether the batteries are sound and seat securely, if the green light is constant or flickers.

You may find that others may then jump in with suggestions.

Hi everyone,

I had the same problem - no green light, nothing working, new batteries don't work - and tried the suggestions above, including the CTRL+COMMAND+OPTION+POWER, cleaning inside the battery cartridge, and trying different batteries.

Now the "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" has appeared on my screen and the computer is trying to pair with my mouse (which is now finally flashing the little green light!) but the computer is saying "The computer failed to pair with that mouse." Unless I missed it, I don't think anyone above has experienced this. Anyone out there know why this is happening??? Driving me insane...

Thanks in advance for the help!

Just passing this one along -- none of the hoo-haw in all the previous pages worked - but this did it. - dm

"Recently I was affected by a pretty annoying phenomena of my Apple bluetooth mouse. The mouse could only be used to click but the cursor did not move. Various times I disabled the mouse and/or the bluetooth module but that had no effect. Finally I got the solution from this blog. The battery connectors did oxidyze and one simply needs to wipe the clear finish (slight build up) from the metal pads. Et voilá the mouse will come back to live again..."

You'll never believe this!

I've tried new batteries, old batteries, rechargeables, a folded paper wedge shoved between the batteries, cleaning the contact points... everything.

I noticed some batteries worked and some didn't. It all comes down to the depth of the positive contact 'nipple' (for want of a better word) on the battery. Energizer, Panasonic and Ikea all work fine but Duracell won't and it's down to 0.5mm difference in depth.

Take a look at the positive contact in the mouse itself and you'll notice the metal contact is recessed behind plastic — if the positive 'nipple' on the battery isn't long enough it won't make contact with the mouse. Hence the Energizer's work Applelove14.

I FIXED IT 🙂
Tried everything that people have posted here , had no luck ..... sooo got a hair dyer and warmed up the mouse for 30 seconds and presto, instant working mouse. just flipped the mouse on its metal belly, bit of heat where the batteries sit and within seconds, i got the green light back on. ( just don't hold the hair dyer too close, you don't want to fry anything!! )
haha household fixes are the best! 😀
